Before buying a hub, speaker, or display, check the products’ compatibility, whether your chosen platform needs a Matter controller for the features you want, and how you plan to control devices at home and away.
What counts as a smart home control device?
Control can come from a phone app, a voice interface, a smart display, or a hub/controller. These roles can overlap, but they are not interchangeable: a device that lets you give voice commands does not necessarily provide every hub function, such as setting up Matter devices or controlling them remotely.

Start with the platform you already use, such as Google Home, Apple Home, or Alexa, and check its current compatibility information alongside the specifications for each accessory. Google documents app and voice control options, while Apple describes controlling accessories through Apple Home. The exact arrangement depends on the platform and products involved.

How to choose a home control setup
- List what you own. Note your phone platform, smart speakers or displays, and existing lights, plugs, switches, locks, sensors, or other connected products.
- Choose the ecosystem you want to use. Confirm that the specific devices you plan to control appear on that platform’s current compatibility list. Do not assume that compatibility with one platform means compatibility with another.
- Check the exact device categories and features. A platform may support a category without supporting every model or every function. Verify the individual product’s requirements and supported features.
- Confirm whether a hub or controller is required. Look at the requirements for setup, automation, and control when away from home, not just basic in-home control.
- Choose your preferred control method. Decide whether app control, voice commands, or a display is most useful, and make sure the products you select support that method in your chosen ecosystem.
Does Matter mean every device works with every platform?
No. Matter is intended to improve compatibility across smart home platforms, but it is not a promise that every Matter device, feature, or control method works everywhere. Google Home and Nest Help describes Matter as “the industry standard for smart homes designed to eliminate compatibility issues.” That statement describes Matter’s goal; it should not replace checking a device’s specific compatibility and feature support.

Google says Matter-enabled devices can be controlled through multiple Matter-certified smart home apps, and Apple describes Matter as enabling accessories to work across platforms. In practice, support still depends on the accessory, platform, and feature. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility details and the platform’s official list before purchasing.
When do you need a Matter hub or controller?
Requirements vary by platform and use. Google says a hub is needed to set up, control, and automate Matter devices while away from home. A speaker or display with smart home controls should not automatically be assumed to provide all controller or hub functions. Check the exact device’s role and the platform’s current requirements for the Matter functions you need.

Which device categories should you check?
Supported Matter categories differ by platform. Google’s compatible-device information lists lighting and electrical products. Amazon’s documented Matter categories also include hubs, sensors, locks, window coverings, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, appliances, and robotic vacuums. These category lists do not establish that every product in a category works with every platform or supports the same features.
