A smart-glasses label alone does not tell you whether a model has a camera, a display, audio, or an assistant, so compare the exact model and generation.
How smart glasses and camera glasses relate
Smart glasses have electronic features built into or paired with eyewear. Depending on the model, those features may include audio, microphones, a voice assistant, a lens display, a camera, or a combination. Camera glasses are smart glasses with a camera intended for hands-free photo or video capture; the terms are not mutually exclusive categories.

In short, smart glasses do not necessarily have cameras, but camera glasses are smart glasses. “Camera glasses” is a useful way to describe a function, not a guarantee about image quality, recording controls, or other features.

Ray-Ban’s US catalog, accessed October 4, 2026, illustrates why the specific model matters. Its Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 combines a camera with open-ear audio and Meta AI features. The catalog also lists Ray-Ban Meta Audio as audio-only, with no camera, and a Meta Ray-Ban Display model with a lens display. These are examples from one manufacturer’s lineup, not definitions of every product in either category. Ray-Ban’s US catalog

Camera glasses: capture is part of the feature set
For Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3, Ray-Ban lists a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, image capture at 3024 × 4032 pixels and video options including 3K Ultra HD at 30 fps. It also lists a six-microphone array, open-ear audio and IPX4 water resistance. These are manufacturer-published specifications for that model, not independent test results or category-wide standards. Ray-Ban’s US catalog
Smart glasses without a camera
Smart glasses can provide electronic features without capturing photos or video. Ray-Ban explicitly describes its Meta Audio version as having no camera, while its separate Meta Ray-Ban Display model has a lens display. That distinction matters if you want audio or display functions but do not want a camera-equipped model.

What to compare before choosing
Use the model name and generation—not just the words “smart glasses” or “camera glasses”—to check these differences:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Camera: Confirm whether it is present, and check the listed photo resolution and video modes if capture quality matters.
- Audio and microphones: Check whether the glasses have speakers, microphones, or both, and whether audio is open-ear.
- Display: A camera does not imply an in-lens display. Confirm whether the exact model has one.
- Assistant and connectivity: Check which phone, app, account and internet connection are required. Ray-Ban says operating its Meta glasses requires a compatible smartphone, wireless internet, a Meta account and the Meta AI app. Ray-Ban’s US catalog
- Prescription options: Ray-Ban says compatible styles are available with prescription lenses, but eligibility depends on the frame and lens combination. Confirm compatibility for the specific model.
- Battery and water resistance: Look for specifications tied to the exact model. A claim for one generation should not be assumed to apply to another.
- Recording indicator and storage: Check how the device signals capture, where files are stored, and what controls the manufacturer describes.
What to know about camera privacy
Recording indicators and storage policies vary by product. Meta says its glasses’ capture LED blinks during gallery capture, cannot be switched off, and that blocking the LED disables the camera. Meta’s July 2026 FAQ states, “The capture LED has no off switch.” These are Meta’s statements about its own glasses, not a universal rule for camera glasses. Meta also says photos and videos captured for the gallery stay on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone. That describes the company’s stated handling of gallery captures; it does not establish how every AI feature processes information or how other manufacturers handle recordings. Recording laws also depend on where you are, so product controls alone do not settle whether recording is appropriate or lawful in a particular situation.
Bottom line for picking a pair
Choose based on the features you actually need. If hands-free photos or video are essential, verify that the exact model has a camera and review its capture modes and privacy controls. If you want audio or a display without a camera, look for an explicitly camera-free model. Check the current regional listing for model, generation, prescription eligibility and phone/app requirements before buying.
