Before using smart glasses, review the companion app’s controls for AI camera use, cloud media, voice listening, activity history, and data sharing. The exact settings depend on the brand and model; the steps below use Ray-Ban Meta as a documented example, based on official guidance reviewed October 7, 2026. Owners of other glasses should check their current app and manufacturer’s privacy guidance rather than assume the same controls apply.
Start with the distinction between recording and asking AI
Ray-Ban Meta has ordinary camera captures and camera-based Meta AI requests, and they do not follow the same path. Meta says gallery photos and videos remain privately stored on the glasses until you import them to a phone. By contrast, if you ask Meta AI a question about what the camera sees, the glasses send a photo to Meta’s cloud for AI processing. The Ray-Ban US FAQ says photos processed with AI are stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with help from trained reviewers. Ray-Ban’s US FAQ describes these product-specific practices.

If you do not want a scene sent for an AI answer, do not ask the glasses to analyze it, and review the Meta AI and Camera use controls in the app. Turning off optional camera AI should not be confused with disabling the glasses’ ordinary camera, and no single toggle should be assumed to govern every kind of data processing.

In the Ray-Ban Meta app, inspect the Meta AI settings and the Camera use option. Labels and availability can change by software version and region, so confirm what each control says in your own app before relying on it.

Decide whether to enable cloud-media enhancement
Cloud media is a separate optional feature from deliberately asking Meta AI about a camera image. Ray-Ban describes it as cloud processing for higher-quality photos and videos, montages, and curated suggestions. Its US FAQ says media is temporarily stored in the cloud for 30 days and then expires automatically when this option is enabled. The FAQ also says you can switch the feature off in settings, and deleting gallery items deletes them from the cloud as well.
If you do not want this additional cloud processing, turn off the cloud-media option in the app. That setting concerns enhancement and related features; it is not a blanket statement about what happens when you separately invoke camera-based AI.

Choose how voice requests and follow-ups work
Ray-Ban’s US FAQ describes a Meta AI setting called “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’.” In the FAQ version reviewed, it is enabled by default. When on, the microphone remains on briefly after a request so you can ask a follow-up without repeating the wake phrase, then turns off after a few seconds if there is no further request. The feature is unavailable while the microphone is already actively used for some functions.

Review voice activity and deletion controls
Ray-Ban directs users to the app’s AI tab to review conversations and to the activity log for voice activity. Use those areas to see what is available for your account and to delete voice recordings you no longer want retained. Meta says deleted information will not be used for future training, but deletion does not instantly undo patterns a model has already learned. As Meta puts it, “If I delete a piece of information a model learned from, the model won’t change in that moment.” Meta’s Responsible Innovation FAQ describes this limitation.

Meta says the capture LED lights when the camera is in use and advises asking people nearby before taking a photo or video. In a July 2026 FAQ, Meta said the white capture LED has no off switch and that covering or disabling it automatically disables the camera. Meta also said gallery captures are stored privately on the glasses until imported to a phone. These statements concern Meta AI glasses and should not be generalized to other brands. An indicator is not a substitute for consent. Follow venue rules, explain the device when appropriate, and avoid recording in sensitive settings without clear permission. Meta’s bystander guidance recommends asking people before capturing them.

Before your first outing: a short checklist
- Check whether Meta AI and Camera use are enabled, and decide whether you want camera-based AI at all.
- Turn off cloud-media enhancement if you do not want that optional processing.
- Disable “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” if you do not want a brief follow-up listening window.
- Locate the AI tab, activity log, and voice-recording deletion controls.
- Learn how your model’s camera indicator works, and ask permission before recording people.
- If you use a different brand or model, verify each control in its current companion app and manufacturer guidance; Ray-Ban Meta’s menus and data practices are not universal.
