The right placement depends on the specific device and task: local processing can work without a phone or internet for supported features, a nearby host adds compute but depends on a connection, and cloud processing can support larger workloads while sending data beyond the glasses. No cited apples-to-apples benchmark establishes one option as fastest or most efficient for every task.
What “distributed inference” means on smart glasses
Inference is the step in which an AI model processes input—such as a camera image, audio, or a prompt—and produces a result. In smart glasses, “distributed” describes where the steps run and how they are coordinated. It does not imply one standard architecture: a feature might run entirely on the glasses, use a connected phone or laptop, send work to a cloud service, or combine locations.

A full task includes more than the model’s computation. The system must capture image or audio, transfer it if needed, preprocess it, run inference, and return an output. A published model-inference time therefore cannot be treated as the user-visible delay for a phone- or cloud-connected feature.
Where can AI processing run?
On the glasses
Glasses can run compact, task-specific models locally. Qualcomm says its Snapdragon AR1+ Gen 1 platform supports small language models (SLMs) entirely on the glasses for uses including a personalized assistant and real-time translation without a smartphone connection. Qualcomm also describes a Hexagon NPU and visual analytics engine on the platform. These are platform capabilities described by Qualcomm; they do not establish that every product using—or marketed as using—AI glasses exposes those features or handles every request locally.

One research prototype illustrates what a tightly scoped local task can look like. The authors of the 2023 TinyissimoYOLO paper report 17 ms for model inference and 1.59 mJ per inference. For that prototype, image capture to prediction took 56 ms, or 18 frames per second; total power was 62.9 mW, and continuous runtime was estimated at 9.3 hours on a 154 mAh battery. Those figures belong to the study’s hardware, object-detection models, and setup—not to retail glasses generally. In particular, the 17 ms figure is model time, while 56 ms includes capture to prediction.
On a nearby phone or laptop
A host-assisted design uses a wireless connection to send some work from glasses to a nearby device. Qualcomm describes Snapdragon AR2 as splitting processing between AR glasses and a smartphone or laptop over Wi-Fi. It also describes dividing work within the glasses between an AR processor and a coprocessor, with latency-sensitive tasks assigned within the glasses.

Cloud inference moves some model work to remote servers. In a September 2026 engineering article, Meta says basic requests such as placing calls or answering texts can happen entirely on-device, while more advanced workloads need larger models and cloud compute. That description is specific to Meta’s account of its system; it is not a hardware execution map for every smart-glasses product.

| Consideration | On the glasses | Nearby phone or laptop | Cloud |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latency | A local task avoids a glasses-to-host or glasses-to-cloud round trip, but capture, preprocessing, inference, and output still contribute to total delay. The TinyissimoYOLO results apply only to its prototype. | Depends on the wireless link, host processing, and return path as well as the task. No same-task end-to-end figure is stated by Qualcomm. | Depends on the connection and complete service pipeline as well as model processing. No same-task end-to-end figure is stated by Meta. |
| Energy and thermal budget | Uses the glasses’ own compute and battery budget. The TinyissimoYOLO power and runtime figures are prototype-specific, not retail-device estimates. | Moves some compute to the host, but adds radio use and reliance on the host. The cited Qualcomm material does not quantify battery impact for a complete glasses-and-host task. | Moves model computation to remote infrastructure, but still requires connected glasses and data transfer. The cited Meta material does not give a comparable glasses battery figure. |
| Connectivity and continuity | Supported local features can work without a smartphone connection; whether they work without internet depends on the particular feature and product. | Requires a working connection to the nearby host for tasks assigned there. | Requires connectivity to the cloud service for tasks assigned there. |
| Data boundary | Data processed locally need not be sent elsewhere for that processing step; a product may still transmit data for other features. | Some input or intermediate data must reach the host for work assigned to it. The cited sources do not specify a universal phone-hosted privacy policy. | Data sent for remote processing crosses the glasses’ boundary. Meta describes CVMs and attestation for its Private Processing system; those protections are Meta’s account of its design. |
| Model capability and personalization | Qualcomm describes SLM support on AR1+ for assistant and translation uses. Capability depends on the model, hardware, and feature implemented by the product. | Host compute can supplement glasses processing. Qualcomm describes the split architecture, but does not specify a universal model size or personalization level for host-run tasks. | Meta says advanced workloads can use larger cloud models, and describes its system as supporting personalized AI. The cited source does not establish a universal model capability across services. |
What happens in a consumer AI-glasses interaction?
Meta’s system card describes one Ray-Ban Meta interaction flow: a user speaks a prompt, the glasses capture an image, speech recognition converts the words to text, and the image and prompt text are passed to a model. Text responses are delivered in the app and through the glasses’ speakers. This explains the interaction and data flow, but does not specify the hardware location for every processing step.

The system card also warns that generated outputs can be inaccurate, fabricated, inappropriate, or out of date. It describes controls for voice features, stored information, and media deletion. Because the flow can involve both an image and recognized prompt text, users evaluating a feature should check what it captures, where the data is processed, what is retained, and which controls apply.

How to choose the right processing location
Evaluate the particular feature rather than relying on a product’s general “AI” label. These questions expose the tradeoffs that matter:
- What is the complete task? Include capture, transfer, preprocessing, inference, and output—not just model execution time.
- Must it work offline? Confirm whether the feature works without a phone and without internet; those are separate requirements.
- What data leaves the glasses? Ask whether images, audio, transcripts, or other inputs go to a host or cloud service, and what is stored or deletable.
- What is the battery and heat cost? Local compute uses the glasses’ limited power and thermal budget; host and cloud designs add radio use and other dependencies. Look for measurements for the exact product and task.
- Does the task need a larger or personalized model? A compact local model may suit a narrow function, while a feature requiring more model capability may use a host or cloud service.
- What happens when the connection drops? Identify which parts continue locally, which pause, and whether results or inputs are queued.
For any claimed speed or efficiency advantage, check that the comparison uses the same task, device conditions, and full pipeline. The cited platform descriptions and single research prototype do not provide such a cross-placement comparison.
