You can add smart control to an air conditioner in three ways: use a Wi-Fi infrared controller with a compatible remote-controlled unit, install a wired smart thermostat on compatible central HVAC, or use Wi-Fi controls already built into the AC. The right option depends on how your system receives commands—not simply whether it is called an air conditioner.
1. Wi-Fi infrared controller for a remote-controlled AC
A Wi-Fi infrared (IR) controller communicates with an air conditioner by sending commands much like its handheld remote. Depending on the controller, it can add app control, schedules, and smart-home integrations without connecting to thermostat wiring.

This is the option to investigate for many window, portable, and mini-split air conditioners that use an IR remote. Sensibo says its controllers support these and other AC types, while Cielo lists its Breez controllers for mini-split, window, and portable units. Those are manufacturer compatibility claims, not a guarantee for every model. Read the Sensibo AC compatibility guide and check the Cielo product listings for the controller type you are considering.

- Confirm that the AC has a working IR remote. An IR controller needs to send the commands that the unit’s remote would normally send.
- Look up the AC brand and model—or the remote—in the controller maker’s compatibility resource. A shared brand name alone does not establish compatibility.
- Choose a place where the controller has a suitable signal path to the AC, and check the product’s requirements for your room and network.
- Verify the specific app and smart-home integrations offered by the model; those features vary and can change.
2. Wired smart thermostat for compatible central HVAC
If your home has ducted central air, a wired smart thermostat may be the appropriate route. It connects to the HVAC system’s thermostat wiring, so it is not interchangeable with an IR controller intended to imitate a room AC’s remote.

Before choosing one, identify your HVAC system and check the thermostat’s required system type, voltage, and wiring. Cielo separates thermostats for ducted systems from controllers for mini-splits and says its central smart thermostats are for 24V systems. Mysa says its central thermostat supports central AC and other compatible systems, and notes that a C-wire or adapter may be required. These manufacturer statements do not confirm that a particular home is compatible. Use the Cielo compatibility checker or the thermostat maker’s instructions; ask a qualified HVAC professional if the wiring or voltage is unclear. 3. Built-in Wi-Fi or smart-home controls
Check the AC’s manual, app, or manufacturer support page before purchasing an add-on. If your exact model already supports Wi-Fi or smart-home control, its built-in feature may provide the control you want without a separate IR device or thermostat.

Do not assume a feature is available just because another model from the same brand has it. Verify the exact model and the supported app or platform in its documentation. In general, a remote-controlled room AC points toward an IR controller, while ducted central HVAC may call for a compatible wired thermostat.

Why a smart plug is not a universal solution
A generic smart plug should not be treated as a full-featured or automatically suitable AC controller. Whether any plug is appropriate depends on the specific AC’s manual, electrical configuration, and the plug’s rating. Confirm those details for the exact equipment before considering a plug; the information here does not establish that a particular AC and plug combination is suitable.
