To rehearse a rollback, test the real proxy architecture with representative state, validate the candidate against the exact prior implementation, exercise the actual upgrade and recovery authority, and verify that the old code still interprets every changed value correctly. If the new version writes state the old code cannot safely handle, plan a forward fix or explicit migration instead of claiming rollback is available.
What a rollback rehearsal can—and cannot—prove
In a proxy-based Solidity system, users continue interacting with the proxy address. The proxy delegates execution to an implementation, but the code reads and writes storage in the proxy’s context. An upgrade changes which implementation is used; it does not create a separate copy of the application’s state. See OpenZeppelin’s proxy documentation.

That makes rollback a state-compatibility question as well as an implementation-switch question. Switching the implementation reference back may be technically possible while still being unsafe: the former code may interpret storage differently after the new code has migrated or modified it. No generic proxy mechanism guarantees that arbitrary application state can be reverted safely.

A rehearsal can provide evidence about the specific proxy family, library and tool versions, implementations, authorization path, migration, and recovery procedure tested. It is not a general safety certification, and it cannot establish safety for untested state transitions or configurations.

Identify the system and recovery path you are testing
Before writing the test, record the deployed architecture and the exact versions of the contracts and validation tools. Proxy patterns place upgrade authority in different places, so a test that exercises the wrong caller or upgrade route does not establish that production governance can perform the operation.
| Proxy pattern | Where upgrade authority is exercised | What to include in the rehearsal |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Upgrade administration is associated with the proxy; a ProxyAdmin owner controls upgrades. | Exercise the real ProxyAdmin owner path and account for proxy caller restrictions that may affect interactions. |
| UUPS | Upgrade logic resides in the implementation. | Test the actual authorization route, including the implementation’s _authorizeUpgrade access control, and verify the recovery implementation retains the required protections. |
| Beacon | Proxies use a shared beacon whose implementation can be changed. | Test the shared-beacon change and assess the effect across a representative cohort of dependent proxies, not just one isolated instance. |
These distinctions are described in the OpenZeppelin Contracts proxy API and the Upgrades Plugins proxy guide. They do not make one pattern universally safest; the right rehearsal depends on the system’s actual authority, scope, tooling, and recovery design.

Rehearse the upgrade and recovery in a controlled environment
- Pin the test subject. Record the proxy kind, deployed library and plugin versions, current implementation address and artifact, candidate artifact, upgrade authority, and intended recovery mechanism. Keep the exact prior implementation available as the reference for validation and as the target of any proposed switch-back.
- Deploy the same architecture. In a local or otherwise controlled environment, deploy the same proxy design and seed it through the proxy using the prior implementation. Use representative values and protocol states, including cases that exercise critical invariants. A direct call to an implementation does not test the proxy’s storage context.
- Validate against the intended prior version. Run the project’s supported upgrade validation with the actual prior implementation as the reference. Confirm the compiler output includes storage layout when required and that the tool is comparing the intended contracts. OpenZeppelin Upgrades Core requires a reference contract for layout comparisons; without one, incompatible changes may not be reported. See the Upgrades Core API documentation.
- Exercise the real upgrade route. Use the same authorization or governance path intended for the system, submit the upgrade transaction, and execute any migration call. Test both implementation-level behavior and higher-level calls through the proxy. OpenZeppelin’s writing upgradeable contracts guidance recommends testing implementation behavior and checking that state is maintained across an upgrade.
- Check application behavior after the upgrade. Assert expected stored values, balances and permissions where relevant, emitted events, and application-specific invariants. Include behavior that depends on state introduced or changed by the migration, not only calls that leave that state untouched.
- Exercise the proposed recovery procedure. If recovery means switching to the former implementation, perform that exact switch after the new implementation has run and changed state. Then verify the prior code’s interpretation and behavior for every affected value. If this fails, or if the system has no tested safe switch-back path, test and document a forward-fix or explicit migration recovery plan instead.
- Keep a decision record. Capture implementation addresses, relevant calldata, validation output, state assertions, test results, and the responsible upgrade authority. A callable upgrade function or an administrator key alone is not evidence that reverting the implementation is safe.
Check storage-layout compatibility, including namespaced storage
Under OpenZeppelin’s documented upgrade rules, existing state variables generally must not be reordered, removed, or changed to a different type; new state is generally appended, subject to pattern-specific rules and validation. These rules matter because implementation code interprets storage slots held by the proxy. Read the storage-layout guidance for the installed toolchain and contract pattern rather than assuming a change is safe based on compilation alone.

Namespaces help isolate layouts, but they do not eliminate the need to validate changes. The cited plugin guidance requires Solidity 0.8.20 or later for namespaced-layout support. Confirm that requirement and the applicable validation behavior against the versions used by your project; the current Contracts 5.x upgradeable contracts documentation may differ from older deployed dependencies.

For rollback specifically, forward compatibility is not enough. A candidate can pass a forward layout check yet write new or migrated state that the former implementation does not understand. Include post-upgrade writes and migration effects in the recovery test, and verify old-code behavior through the proxy after switching back.
Understand the limits of the historical UUPS rollback check
“Rollback” also refers to a historical check in some UUPS upgrade safety mechanisms. OpenZeppelin’s current API documentation says that the earlier rollback check was deprecated and replaced by an ERC-1822 check. That mechanism is not a promise that an application’s state can safely be interpreted by a prior implementation. See the current proxy API documentation.

In UUPS systems, also verify that the implementation used for recovery preserves the relevant authorization protections. An implementation that remains upgradeable while removing or weakening its checks can undermine the system’s upgrade controls. Testing a mechanism-level compatibility check is not a substitute for exercising governance, authorization, migration, and application invariants.

When is it reasonable to call a system upgradeable?
Describe a system as upgradeable only in the scoped sense supported by its tested architecture and controls. Before making that claim, verify that the intended authority can perform the upgrade, the candidate passes validation against the correct prior implementation, state and invariants survive the migration, and the proposed recovery path works after representative new-version writes. If the old implementation cannot safely resume, say that recovery requires a forward fix or migration rather than describing the system as rollback-capable.
