A smart air conditioner connects to a network or app so you can control it remotely, schedule temperature changes, and, on some models, view energy-use information or use voice commands. The label describes connectivity—not guaranteed energy efficiency, universal smart-home compatibility, or lower bills.
What makes an air conditioner smart?
Its defining practical feature is connected control. Depending on the model, an app may let you switch the unit on or off, change settings while away, or schedule temperature changes. Some connected room air conditioners also report energy use. ENERGY STAR describes these functions as adding convenience, comfort, and potential energy savings, but the available controls vary by product (ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner guide).

“Smart” does not identify one common feature package. For example, TCL lists app and voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant for its H8T9E1-A through-the-wall model; that is a feature of this specific product, not a promise about every smart AC (TCL H8T9E1-A product listing).

- Remote control: Use an app to operate the AC without being beside its physical controls.
- Scheduling: Set temperature changes or operating times in advance.
- Energy-use feedback: Some models show information about the unit’s energy use.
- Voice control: Some models work with named voice assistants; confirm which assistants are supported for the exact model.
These are possibilities, not a standard checklist included with every connected unit. ENERGY STAR also describes connected room ACs as potentially smart-grid ready, which could allow participation in some local utility programs. A program, bill credit, or rebate is not guaranteed: check your utility, location, eligible models, and current terms (ENERGY STAR).

Is a smart AC more energy-efficient?
Not necessarily. Connectivity and efficiency are separate questions: an app connection does not establish how efficiently a particular AC cools. Check the model’s efficiency information and whether it is currently certified rather than relying on the word “smart.” ENERGY STAR discusses connected features separately from its efficiency and sizing guidance (ENERGY STAR’s consumer guide).
Correct sizing also matters. ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized room AC can waste energy and cool a room before removing enough humidity. Its examples—not a guarantee of performance for any smart model—are 5,000 BTU per hour for 100–150 square feet, 7,000 BTU per hour for 250–300 square feet, and 10,000 BTU per hour for 400–450 square feet. It also recommends accounting for shade, sunlight, extra occupants, and kitchen use. Use its sizing guidance for the room and conditions rather than treating those examples as universal cutoffs (ENERGY STAR room AC sizing guidance).

What should you check before choosing one?
- Choose the installation type and capacity. Confirm whether you need a window unit, through-the-wall unit, or another configuration, and select a suitable cooling capacity for the room.
- Check efficiency separately. Look up the product’s energy information and certification status; smart controls alone do not establish efficiency.
- Confirm the functions you will use. Check whether the specific model supports remote control, scheduling, energy-use feedback, or voice control, and identify any supported assistants.
- Read the setup requirements. App, account, Wi-Fi band, and signal requirements are manufacturer- and model-specific. GE Appliances describes setup through its app in its built-in Wi-Fi guidance (GE Appliances Wi-Fi setup guidance). TCL support material cites a 2.4 GHz network and good Wi-Fi signal for setup (TCL air conditioner support). Check the instructions for the model you are considering rather than assuming those requirements apply to all units.
- Verify any utility benefit directly. If a rebate or savings program matters to you, check the current rules with your utility and confirm the exact model qualifies.
What “smart” does not mean
- It does not mean every model works with the same app, voice assistant, or smart-home ecosystem.
- It does not mean every model uses the same Wi-Fi band or has the same setup process.
- It does not guarantee lower energy use, lower bills, a rebate, or utility-program eligibility.
ENERGY STAR’s connected-room-AC criteria describe capabilities such as reporting, remote management, and demand response, but its criteria page says the table was last updated in 2020. Treat those detailed criteria as potentially dated and check current product documentation and certification information (ENERGY STAR connected criteria for partners). ENERGY STAR identifies Version 5.0 of its residential room air conditioner specification as effective October 30, 2023; consult its partner page for current specification status (ENERGY STAR room AC partner resources).
