Before replacing your home theater system, check speaker placement, listening-seat geometry, and your system’s room-calibration settings. These adjustments can help the equipment you already own work better in your room; Dolby does not quantify a guaranteed improvement, so results depend on your layout and system.
Start with speaker placement for your actual setup
Use a placement guide for your specific configuration—such as 5.1 or an Atmos layout—and arrange the speakers in relation to the main listening seat. Dolby’s surround sound speaker setup guide explains placement and room considerations. Moving speakers at random can make the layout less consistent rather than better.

For height-channel systems, the room can determine which layout is practical. Dolby’s Atmos installation guidelines describe both overhead speakers and Atmos-enabled up-firing modules. Ceiling construction, wiring, rental restrictions, and appearance may make overhead speakers impractical, so follow the layout that matches your equipment and room.

Align speaker distances with the listening position
For speakers on the listener plane, Dolby’s 2018 installation guidelines say they should ideally be equidistant from the listening position. Real rooms rarely allow perfect symmetry. If one speaker is closer, use the receiver’s speaker-distance settings or its calibration procedure to compensate for the different arrival times. Dolby identifies the front speakers as a reference point in its setup guidance.

The same 2018 guide uses 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) as a typical ear-height reference for an average seated listener. Treat that as a setup reference, not a universal measurement: seating, furniture, and the system’s configuration affect the appropriate placement.
Run room calibration after making changes
Many soundbars, AV receivers, and subwoofers have calibration modes that listen to the room and adjust the setup. If your device offers one, run it after moving speakers or furniture so its settings reflect the current arrangement. Dolby’s Dolby Atmos Speaker Setup 101 notes that “Every room is different, so calibration can help you get the best setup.” Follow your device’s instructions for microphone position and measurement steps; those details vary by system.

Address reflections only if they are a problem
Hard, reflective surfaces can contribute to unwanted reflections. If you hear an echo or reflections are otherwise disrupting the sound, consider sound-absorbing or sound-diffusing treatment on the relevant surfaces. Dolby discusses these approaches in its speaker setup guidance. Treatment is conditional, not a required first purchase: identify a reflection problem before adding panels or other materials.
Use stands to solve a placement constraint
A speaker stand is useful when it lets you put a speaker in a more suitable position—for example, closer to the recommended height or with a clearer path to the listening area. Dolby mentions stands as one possible setup adjustment, not a guaranteed sound upgrade. First identify which placement limitation a stand would address.

Keep or change the system based on the room
A soundbar is a convenient option for a living room, while separate speakers with an AV receiver offer more flexibility for tailoring a dedicated theater to its room. Dolby’s home theater setup guide describes these different approaches. Before upgrading, consider whether your current system can be positioned correctly and whether it includes calibration.

- Prioritize the existing setup if you can place the speakers appropriately and use the system’s calibration features.
- Consider a different arrangement if the room prevents correct placement of surround or overhead speakers. A soundbar and a separate-speaker system have different placement and equipment trade-offs.
- Choose overhead or up-firing Atmos speakers according to the room and the matching installation guidance; neither option is practical in every home.
