A small-business WordPress site needs regular updates, usable backups, and a quick check that customers can still reach the business and complete key tasks. The routine does not have to fall on one fixed day: set its frequency according to how often the site changes and how much recent data the business can afford to lose.
What should you update on your WordPress site?
Check the dashboard for available WordPress core, plugin, and theme updates, and give security updates priority. WordPress.org advises keeping plugins and themes current to help protect a site. Before updating, make a current backup; WordPress’s learning material also recommends backing up before installing a plugin or theme.

Automatic updates can reduce hands-on work, but they are not a set-and-forget guarantee. WordPress update scheduling can depend on cron tasks and the hosting environment or plugins. Review the dashboard for failed-update notices and check that the site still works after updates run.

A usable WordPress backup needs both the site’s files and its database. Keep copies somewhere separate from the live site so a problem affecting the server does not also take out every backup. WordPress Developer Resources suggests retaining at least 3–5 recent copies across different locations, such as the hosting server, cloud storage, and a local computer.

Choose the backup frequency based on how much content or business data changes. WordPress Developer Resources suggests weekly backups for smaller sites and daily backups for high-activity sites; these are general suggestions, not a rule that fits every business. A site that receives frequent bookings, orders, or lead submissions may need more frequent protection than a rarely updated brochure site.
Compare backup approaches by checking whether they include files and the database, how often they run, where they store copies, how many versions they retain, and who is responsible for noticing failures. Options include hosting-provider backups, backup plugins, and manual backups. Periodically confirm that you can restore a copy: a backup that has never been tested may not help when the live site fails.

Monthly WordPress maintenance checklist
- Review updates and notices. In the WordPress dashboard, check for core, plugin, and theme updates and any failed auto-update notices. Confirm you have a current backup before making changes.
- Verify the latest backup. Check that it completed, includes both files and the database, and is stored off the live site. Make sure you know the restore path.
- Test the customer journey. Load the homepage and key service or product pages. Submit a contact or booking form, and check that contact details and calls to action are correct.
- Check statistics. WordPress.org’s maintenance guidance recommends checking statistics at least monthly for an active site.
What to review less often
Refresh older content, check internal and external links, remove plugins or themes the site no longer uses, and review how the site is presented. WordPress.org’s maintenance guidance says the timing of these tasks depends on site activity and size; its sample calendar is not a universal schedule.

Check that your hosting still meets WordPress recommendations
When choosing or renewing hosting, compare the plan with WordPress.org’s current recommendations: PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later, and HTTPS. Requirements can change, so consult the WordPress.org requirements page when making the decision. HTTPS support matters for a site that handles customer inquiries or transactions.
