Slow Wi-Fi on a PC: Find the Cause and Fix It

Compare your PC with another device, test signal and Wi-Fi bands, then check Windows, the adapter, router, and ISP before buying hardware.

A slow Wi-Fi connection on one PC does not automatically mean the computer needs replacing. First compare it with another device on the same network. If only the PC is slow, focus on its Wi-Fi adapter, Windows settings, drivers, and background activity. If several devices struggle, check signal conditions, the router, and your internet service.

First check whether the problem is the PC or the whole network

Use another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi and try the same site, app, download, or call. Comparing the same task helps distinguish a PC-specific issue from a busy service or a general network slowdown. Note whether the problem is constant or intermittent, and whether it means slow downloads, delays, or dropped connections.

  • Only this PC is affected: Start with its location and Wi-Fi band, then check Windows, the adapter, its driver, and apps using bandwidth.
  • Several devices are affected: Look at router placement and conditions, restart the modem and router according to their maker’s instructions, and check with your internet provider for a service issue.

A speed-test number alone does not identify the cause or provide a universal pass/fail threshold. Compare devices under similar conditions and use the result as one clue, not a diagnosis.

Test the Wi-Fi signal before changing settings

Move the PC closer to the router

Retry from a location with fewer walls and obstacles between the PC and router. Distance, physical barriers, metal objects, and nearby wireless devices can affect Wi-Fi performance. Microsoft specifically notes that microwave ovens and cordless phones can use similar frequencies. If moving closer improves the connection, coverage or interference is a more likely factor than a failing PC. See Microsoft’s guidance on why an internet connection may be slow and its Wi-Fi home-layout advice.

Try the other Wi-Fi band

If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect the PC to the other band and repeat the same task. The adapter must support the band you select. Neither band is best in every home: layout, distance, obstacles, interference, and channel congestion all matter. Microsoft discusses these trade-offs in its home-layout guidance and Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

Consider router settings only after basic tests

If signal strength seems good and changing location or band does not help, congestion or router configuration may be involved. Microsoft notes that channel conditions and channel width can affect performance. Router controls and names vary by manufacturer, so avoid changing advanced settings unless you can identify the relevant option and restore its original value.

Check Windows settings, apps, and the Wi-Fi adapter

  1. Confirm wireless is enabled. Make sure Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off. In Windows 11, begin with the Network and Internet troubleshooter in Get Help; Windows 10 and Windows 11 also provide Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps in Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi guide.
  2. Reconnect to the network. If the connection remains poor, forget the Wi-Fi network in Windows settings and connect again with its password. This can help when a saved connection is the issue.
  3. Look for heavy network use. Open Task Manager and check whether an app or process is using substantial network bandwidth. Pause or close a transfer only if you recognize it and can safely do so.
  4. Inspect the adapter in Device Manager. Check whether Windows reports a problem and note the adapter’s driver date and version. If an update is needed, use the PC manufacturer’s or Wi-Fi adapter manufacturer’s driver where appropriate.
  5. Try the adapter’s power setting if symptoms persist. Microsoft includes disabling the Wi-Fi adapter’s power-saving setting as a possible troubleshooting step. The exact control can differ by adapter and Windows version.
  6. Reserve resets and driver removal for later. Windows network reset and adapter reinstallation can disrupt saved network configuration. Before uninstalling a driver, have an appropriate manufacturer driver available so you can reinstall it if Windows does not restore a working one.

For a deeper diagnosis, Windows can generate a wireless network report showing adapter capabilities, current driver information, and a history of wireless events. It can help identify patterns, but a report by itself does not prove that a component needs replacement. Microsoft explains how to read it in Analyze the wireless network report.

Use Ethernet to isolate the wireless path

If you can connect the PC to the router with Ethernet, compare the same task over the wired connection. This removes the PC’s Wi-Fi link from the test. A successful wired connection does not by itself identify every wireless fault, but it helps narrow the problem to the Wi-Fi path rather than the PC’s general internet access.

Microsoft gives a more specific isolation test: if the PC gets internet access when connected directly to the modem by Ethernet, the connection problem is due to the Wi-Fi router. Follow the modem maker’s instructions when connecting directly, and be aware that some setups may require reconnecting the router afterward. If the PC has no Ethernet port, a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter may be an option; Microsoft covers wired connections in its Ethernet troubleshooting guide.

Decide what to do based on the result

  • Moving closer helps: Improve router placement or reduce obstacles before considering new hardware.
  • Changing bands helps: Keep the band that works better in your layout, provided the PC adapter supports it.
  • Only the PC remains slow: Prioritize its adapter status, driver, power setting, and background network use. Consider a compatible Wi-Fi adapter only if checks point to an adapter limitation or fault; verify operating-system support, band compatibility, and the PC’s ports and antenna constraints.
  • Multiple devices remain slow: Restart the modem and router as directed by their maker, check router placement and settings, and ask your ISP whether service is disrupted. Consider router replacement only if troubleshooting points to coverage, performance, or compatibility.
  • Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: Investigate the router’s wireless coverage, settings, or compatibility rather than treating the Ethernet cable as a Wi-Fi repair.

Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps cover device comparisons, band checks, drivers, adapter power, and router or modem isolation for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
