A slow PC does not automatically need a new processor or a shopping cart full of upgrades. Start with reversible Windows maintenance, find the bottleneck, and spend money only when the hardware is actually the problem. These six practical habits are low-cost ways to keep an older computer useful—not a claim about what any particular author personally does, or a guarantee that every PC will get faster.
1. Find out what is making the PC feel slow
“Slow” can mean a long startup, lag when opening files, stuttering during video calls, or a machine that runs out of storage. Those symptoms point to different causes. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets performance needs among possible contributors. A tweak that helps one bottleneck may do nothing for another.

Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and check the Processes and Performance views while the slowdown is happening. Look for a component consistently under heavy load and note which apps are using resources. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that a single process is the root cause. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance recommends checking resource use as part of troubleshooting.

Install available Windows updates, then check for optional driver updates through Windows Update. Use Windows Security to run a malware scan. These steps can address outdated software or unwanted processes; they are sensible checks, not a promise of a speed boost.

Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Check Microsoft’s current support information for your Windows version before relying on ongoing security updates.
3. Stop unnecessary apps from launching at startup
Apps that start automatically can extend boot time and occupy memory even when you are not using them. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, review the entries, and disable only the ones you recognize and do not need running immediately after sign-in. Avoid disabling security software or device utilities whose purpose you do not understand.

For a one-off slowdown, close unused apps and browser tabs before changing settings. If the PC improves, you have a clue that background workload may be part of the problem.

4. Make room on the system drive
A nearly full drive can make routine work harder and leave less room for updates and temporary files. In Windows, go to Settings > System > Storage and review the categories consuming space. Use Storage Sense or the temporary-file cleanup option to remove files you do not need; check selections carefully before deleting anything.

Do not treat every large file as disposable. Move personal files only after confirming they are backed up, and do not delete unfamiliar system folders. Microsoft includes storage cleanup among its recommended Windows performance checks.
5. Adjust visual effects and power settings only when they fit
If the interface feels sluggish on older hardware, reducing some visual effects may make it feel more responsive. Windows also offers power modes; choosing Best performance can favor responsiveness over energy use. Microsoft cautions that this setting increases power consumption. On a laptop, that can mean shorter battery life and more heat, so it is better suited to plugged-in use when performance matters than to every situation.

Change one setting at a time and see whether it helps your actual workload. Microsoft notes that “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.”
6. Consider an SSD, more RAM, or free software—but check fit first
When an SSD may be worth considering
If the computer still uses a mechanical hard drive and storage activity is a bottleneck, an SSD may be a worthwhile upgrade. Intel explains that hard drives have moving parts, and Intel and PCWorld both discuss SSDs as an option for older or slow PCs. That does not make an SSD a universal fix or guarantee a particular result.

Before buying, confirm the computer supports a replaceable drive and check its interface, physical form factor, and capacity needs. The sources do not establish which drive fits a particular model, and component prices change, so verify compatibility and current cost for your exact machine.
Why RAM is not a guess-and-buy upgrade
More memory can be relevant when the PC is short on RAM for the apps you use, but modules must match the device. Intel’s guidance emphasizes compatibility; without the computer model and current memory configuration, there is no responsible capacity, generation, speed, or module type to prescribe. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before shopping.
Try free software when the workflow allows it
Free and open-source software can reduce what you spend on tools, and Linux is one possible operating-system route for an older PC. But a lower software cost is useful only if the applications and devices you rely on work with the alternative. Do not assume that every Windows program or workflow has a suitable Linux equivalent. The GNU Project discusses free software in education, while PCWorld presents a Windows-to-Linux transition as one possible older-PC strategy.
Choose the least costly fix that addresses the bottleneck
Start with built-in maintenance because it is reversible and costs nothing. If the evidence points to a hardware limit, compare the cost and compatibility of an upgrade with the effort of changing platforms or replacing the machine. The right choice depends on the slowdown, your required applications, portability and battery needs, and what the computer can support—not on a universal list of magic tweaks.
