Most SkyFactory 5 server failures are resolved by identifying the stage at which the connection breaks, then checking the matching pack release, Java runtime and server files. The compatibility baseline in the official project listing is SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, with Java 17 required. Use the dedicated server ZIP for that release, not the client ZIP, and make sure every player uses the same pack version.

This guide separates installation failures, startup crashes, servers that never become ready, connection problems and client crashes while joining. That distinction matters: a server that starts normally but crashes when a player joins needs different evidence from a server that cannot launch at all.

Save the logs before restarting repeatedly. A restart can overwrite the most useful context, especially when the same error appears only once during initialization.

Match the SkyFactory, Minecraft and Forge versions
The official SkyFactory 5 listing reviewed for this guide identifies version 5.0.8 as the latest listed release, for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, published March 11, 2025. Version mismatches are a leading cause of failed starts and join crashes because the client and server must load compatible mods, configuration files and registries.
Verify both installations
- Open the client profile and note the exact SkyFactory release shown by the launcher.
- Open the server archive name and installation notes. For the current baseline, the dedicated archive is
SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip. - Confirm the Minecraft version is 1.20.1 and that the profile uses Forge, not an unmodified Minecraft or a different mod loader profile.
- Have every player select the same SkyFactory release as the server. “Nearly the same” versions are not a safe match.
The project publishes separate client and server ZIP artifacts. A client ZIP can contain files that are irrelevant or harmful to a dedicated server, while a generic Forge server lacks the modpack’s intended server configuration. If the archive in use is not the project’s server artifact, replace it with the server-specific ZIP before investigating more complicated causes.

Do not mix files during an upgrade
When changing releases, create a fresh directory for the new server instead of copying random files from an older installation. Keep the old world and configuration as a backup, then migrate only what you understand. Mixing mod lists or configuration files from different releases can produce errors that look like Java or memory failures.
Make sure the server actually uses Java 17
SkyFactory 5 requires Java 17. Installing Java 17 is not enough if the launch script still finds another Java installation first on the system path.
Check the runtime selected by the operating system
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
java -version
where java
On Linux or macOS, run:
java -version
which java
The version output should identify Java 17. The path output shows which executable is being selected. If several Java versions are installed, edit the server launch script to call the Java 17 executable by its full path, or correct the system and user PATH variables. Then run the check again from the same folder and account that starts the server.

Check the client separately
A server can use Java 17 while the launcher uses another runtime, or the reverse. For a client that fails during installation or launch, verify the launcher’s Java setting and apply the launcher’s Java and Forge troubleshooting guidance. A successful server start does not prove that the client is running the required Java version.

Reinstall from the official server pack when files are incomplete
If startup errors mention missing mods, libraries, classes or configuration files, treat the installation as suspect before changing JVM arguments.
- Stop the server and make a backup of the world and any files you intentionally changed.
- Download the server-specific ZIP for the exact release used by the clients.
- Extract it into a new, short path with normal read/write permissions. Avoid putting the server inside a client profile directory.
- Run the pack’s supplied start script or documented launch command once, allowing it to create required files.
- Accept any required EULA prompt only after reading the file, then restart using the same script.
- Compare the new console output with the old installation. If the clean server starts, add back world data and custom settings one at a time.
The project repository description distinguishes separately generated client and server ZIPs. That distinction is why replacing a damaged installation with a generic Forge server or merely copying the client files is not a reliable repair.
Read the first real startup error
Forge often emits a cascade of secondary errors after the original failure. The first exception, missing file, duplicate mod or registry conflict is usually more useful than the final “server stopped” message.
Useful files to collect
logs/latest.logfrom the server.- The newest file in
crash-reports, if one was created. - The client’s
logs/latest.logand crash report when the failure occurs during joining. - The exact Java version and launch command.
- The server pack filename and the client profile version.
Search the logs for ERROR, Exception, Caused by, Missing, duplicate and mismatch. Include several lines before and after the first occurrence when asking for help. A final disconnect message without its preceding exception is rarely enough to identify the cause.

Set allow-flight=true for falling or flying kicks
SkyFactory 5 server-pack version 5.0.3 release notes, dated January 7, 2025, explicitly state: “Set allow-flight=true in the server.properties to not get kicked for flying when falling.” This is relevant when a player is removed while falling or using a mechanic that the server interprets as flight; it is not a general fix for every crash or connection failure.
- Stop the server completely.
- Open the
server.propertiesfile belonging to that installation. - Change the line to
allow-flight=true. If the line is absent, add it once. - Save the file and restart the server.
- Reproduce the falling or flying kick and check the console for a different result.
Inspect the file associated with the installed release. The documented setting comes from the 5.0.3 server notes, so do not assume that an unrelated properties file or a different server directory was edited.
When the server starts but joining crashes
A server reaching its ready state proves only that initialization completed; it does not identify why a client fails during login or terrain loading. The available issue evidence includes a report from a 5.0.7 server using Java 17.0.14 with 8 GB allocated, but it contains no logs or confirmed resolution. That report cannot establish that memory, Java, networking or any other single factor is the universal cause.
Use a synchronized log comparison
- Start the server and leave the console visible.
- Have one client attempt to join once.
- Note the exact time of the disconnect or crash.
- Save the server log and the client log immediately.
- Compare entries at that timestamp, looking for a mod name, packet error, registry mismatch, entity or chunk error.
If only one player fails while others can join, compare that player’s client profile, Java runtime, installed files and local settings with a working player. If everyone fails at the same point, prioritize server-side logs and world or configuration evidence.
Check the client profile before changing memory
- Confirm the client uses the same SkyFactory and Minecraft versions as the server.
- Confirm the launcher is using Java 17.
- Remove manually added mods, shaders or client modifications until the unmodified pack joins successfully.
- Use the launcher’s repair function if the installation reports missing or corrupted files.
The project page recommends at least 6 GB of RAM for clients. That is a client allocation recommendation, not a measured server requirement and not proof that increasing server memory will fix a join crash.

Use CurseForge repair and Forge guidance for launcher failures
When the problem is downloading, installing or launching the modpack through CurseForge, use its repair-installation option and Forge-specific troubleshooting guidance. These are broad platform checks, not a confirmed solution for every dedicated-server failure.
Repair without destroying your world
- Close the game and launcher.
- Back up saved worlds and any screenshots or configuration files you need.
- Run the launcher’s repair option for the affected profile.
- Launch the repaired client with no extra mods or overrides.
- Test joining the matching server before restoring custom additions.
Keep the server repair separate from the client repair. A launcher repair can fix a client profile while leaving a damaged dedicated-server directory untouched.
Network checks after the server is ready
If the console reaches its ready state and there is no corresponding join attempt, treat the issue as connectivity rather than mod loading. Confirm that the address entered by the client is the address reachable from that network, and check local firewall or router rules that could block the game connection. Test from the same local network first when possible; a local success followed by a remote failure points toward router, firewall or address configuration rather than the modpack itself.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you self-host or use managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct access to files, logs, backups and configuration, but you maintain Java, updates, firewall rules and recovery. A managed service can reduce operating work, but its usefulness depends on whether it supports the exact Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge environment and lets you obtain adequate logs and backups.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Version control | You choose when to install the matching server ZIP and update clients. | Verify support for the exact SkyFactory release, Minecraft version and Forge build. |
| Resources | You control available CPU, storage and memory. | Check the provider’s actual resource allocation and whether it is shared or dedicated. |
| Logs and files | Full direct access. | Confirm that console logs, crash reports and configuration files can be downloaded. |
| Backups | You must schedule and test your own backups. | Check backup frequency, retention and whether you can restore a specific world. |
| Latency | Depends on your home connection and location. | Choose a location near the players and verify network performance. |
| Cost and effort | No hosting fee, but you supply hardware, bandwidth and maintenance. | Recurring cost in exchange for managed infrastructure and support. |
A practical recovery order
Use this order so that each test removes a likely cause without obscuring the evidence:
- Identify whether the failure is installation, startup, readiness, connectivity or joining.
- Confirm SkyFactory 5.0.8, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge on both sides, unless you intentionally run another matching release.
- Confirm that the dedicated server ZIP, not the client ZIP, is installed.
- Verify that both the server process and client launcher use Java 17.
- Test a clean server directory and preserve the original world as a backup.
- Read the first relevant exception in the server and client logs.
- Apply
allow-flight=trueonly for falling or flying kicks. - Use launcher repair for client installation problems.
- Change memory or network settings only when the logs and symptoms support that direction.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Using a client archive as a dedicated server installation.
- Allowing the operating system to select an older Java version even though Java 17 is installed.
- Mixing files from different SkyFactory releases.
- Changing RAM first and never collecting logs.
- Editing a
server.propertiesfile in the wrong directory. - Assuming an anecdotal issue report proves a universal fix.
- Restoring custom mods or settings before a clean profile has successfully joined.
Frequently Asked Questions
What version should SkyFactory 5 players and servers use?
The official listing reviewed for this guide shows SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8 for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. The client and dedicated server must use the same release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does SkyFactory 5 kick me for flying while I am falling?
The SkyFactory 5 server-pack 5.0.3 release notes document setting allow-flight=true in the relevant server.properties file to prevent kicks while falling or flying.
Will allocating more than 8 GB fix a server join crash?
Not necessarily. An issue report involving 8 GB and Java 17.0.14 provided no logs or confirmed cause, so memory cannot be treated as a universal fix. Diagnose the matching client and server logs first.
Can I run the client ZIP as my dedicated server?
Use the project’s separate server ZIP instead. The project publishes distinct client and server artifacts, and the client archive is not a substitute for the dedicated-server configuration.
What should I send when asking for help?
Send the exact pack versions, Java version, launch command, first relevant server error, client crash report and both logs covering the same join attempt. Remove passwords, IP addresses and other private information before sharing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Start with version alignment and Java 17, install the dedicated server ZIP, then diagnose the exact failure stage from synchronized logs. Use allow-flight=true only for falling or flying kicks, and treat RAM increases as a hypothesis rather than a guaranteed cure.
