Check the headset and PC requirements first
Steam labels the product VR-only and lists SteamVR support. Its product page names Oculus Rift, Vive and Microsoft Mixed Reality headsets, but that list is not an up-to-date, exhaustive compatibility matrix. Check the current compatibility information for your specific headset and SteamVR setup before buying or installing. Steam’s SKYBOX VR Video Player listing was released on October 24, 2017; that release date does not establish present-day headset compatibility.

The Windows versions in the requirements table need a current-client caveat: the listing also says the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. The older Windows 7 and 8.1 requirement text does not guarantee that the current Steam Client works on those systems.

Install the Steam PC edition
- Open the current Steam product page for SKYBOX VR Video Player and confirm you are choosing the Steam PC edition.
- Check that your PC meets the listing’s requirements and that your headset works with your current SteamVR setup.
- Install through the current Steam product page, then follow the current SteamVR and headset setup prompts.
The product listing does not provide a complete installation walkthrough or controller setup instructions, so use the prompts for your installed Steam and headset software rather than relying on assumed menu names or steps.
Choose local playback or same-Wi-Fi streaming
Play local video files
The Steam listing describes local playback and lists MP4, AVI and MOV files. It also advertises 2D, 3D, 180-degree and 360-degree video. For 3D, it specifically names side-by-side and over-under formats, and says the player can automatically recognize video type. These are listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every file or codec will play.

Stream from a media server
SKYBOX’s Steam listing describes streaming from a UPnP/DLNA media server on the same Wi-Fi network. A server or NAS is an optional way to serve a personal library; it is not required for local-file playback. Ensure the playback device can reach the server over the same Wi-Fi, then follow the current instructions for your server and app. The listing does not specify router requirements, a minimum network speed, server configuration steps or troubleshooting procedures.
Understand the advertised video capabilities
The Steam page advertises 4K local and streaming playback alongside 2D, 3D, 180-degree and 360-degree viewing, including side-by-side and over-under 3D formats. These are vendor-listed features, not independent test results or a promise that every video file will work. If a particular file matters, check the current app guidance for its format and encoding.
