SkToolbox is a client-side Valheim mod that expands the game’s console and chat commands. It does not become a built-in server feature: each person who needs to run it normally installs it on their own Valheim client, together with BepInEx. The current Thunderstore package is version 1.10.5. You can install it with a compatible mod manager or by extracting the files into Valheim’s game folder, then use help or /? in the console to see commands supported by your installed version.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What SkToolbox does
SkToolbox, created by Skrip, works by extending Valheim’s existing console and chat-command systems. It adds utility commands for actions such as giving items, spawning creatures, healing, teleporting, viewing coordinates, checking the world seed, listing skills, stopping events, taming spawned creatures, and optimizing terrain. The package documentation describes it as fully client-side, so its files are loaded by the player’s game rather than automatically by every server.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That client-side design has two important consequences:
- You need a working BepInEx installation on the Valheim client where you intend to use SkToolbox.
- Commands can still change a shared world, a player’s inventory or position, creatures, terrain, or other players. “Client-side” does not mean “private” or “harmless” in multiplayer.
SkToolbox is a downloadable mod, not a feature that can be enabled from Valheim’s normal server settings. Its command names, aliases, hotkeys, autocomplete behavior, and compatibility can change between releases, so the in-game help output is the authoritative reference for the version you have installed.
Requirements before you install
Prepare the following before copying any files:
- A PC installation of Valheim that launches normally without the mod.
- A BepInEx setup compatible with your Valheim build. SkToolbox requires BepInEx; the DLL alone is not a complete installation.
- The SkToolbox package for the Valheim version you are running. The current Thunderstore listing identifies version 1.10.5, while older pages show releases such as 1.8.4.
- Permission to modify the game folder. On a managed computer, an administrator account may be required.
- A recent backup of any world you will use for testing. A command that alters terrain, inventory, teleport locations, or spawned entities can create changes that are difficult to undo.
Close Valheim and any mod manager before manually moving files. If BepInEx was installed by another tool, note the exact game directory it uses; copying SkToolbox into a second Valheim folder is a common reason for a mod appearing not to work.
Choose an installation method
| Method | Setup effort | Updating | File-placement visibility | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mod manager | Usually easier because the manager can install a BepInEx-enabled profile and the package together. | Convenient when the manager tracks package versions and dependencies. | The manager hides some paths behind a profile or deployment system; verify which Valheim installation the profile targets. | Usually simple: disable, remove, or switch profiles, provided the manager keeps separate files. |
| Manual extraction | More hands-on; you must identify the correct game root and maintain BepInEx yourself. | You download each update and replace the DLL yourself. | Very clear: you can inspect the executable, BepInEx folder, and plugin DLL directly. | Easy if you keep the previous DLL or a clean backup of the game folder. |
The SkToolbox package recommends using a mod manager that includes a working BepInEx installation and specifically mentions Vortex. Manual installation is useful when you want direct control over every file or when a manager profile is not loading the same Valheim copy that you launch.

- Install and test the manager’s Valheim integration. Select the same Valheim installation you normally launch; do not assume the manager found the correct library automatically.
- Create or select a Valheim profile that includes BepInEx. Launch Valheim once through that profile and confirm that BepInEx creates its folders and log files.
- Find SkToolbox in the manager’s package browser and install the current package, shown by the Thunderstore listing as version 1.10.5. Allow the manager to install required dependencies rather than importing only the SkToolbox DLL.
- Check the profile’s enabled-mod list. SkToolbox should be enabled, and BepInEx should be present in the profile’s deployed files.
- Launch Valheim through the manager profile. Wait at the main menu, then inspect the manager or BepInEx log for a SkToolbox load message before joining a world.
- Open the console and run
helpor/?. If the command list appears, create or load a test world and try a harmless informational command such as/coords.
Managers often use profiles, links, or a separate deployment directory. If SkToolbox works only when launched through the manager, that is expected: launching the unmodded game shortcut may bypass the profile entirely. Keep the launch method consistent for everyone who needs the mod.
Install SkToolbox manually
Manual installation has one critical rule: the archive must be extracted into Valheim’s game root, not into a random Downloads subfolder and not directly into a world-save directory.
- Exit Valheim and Steam. Download the SkToolbox archive and a BepInEx package appropriate for your Valheim build.
- Open the Valheim installation directory. In a normal installation, the root is the folder containing
Valheim.exeandUnityPlayer.dll. - Install BepInEx into that root first. After extraction, the BepInEx folder and the two game files should be at the same level. A correct layout resembles:
Valheim.exe UnityPlayer.dll BepInEx
- Start Valheim once with BepInEx installed, then exit. This lets BepInEx generate its configuration and logging folders and confirms that the loader itself starts.
- Extract the SkToolbox archive into the same game root, preserving its folder structure. Do not flatten every file into the root and do not place the DLL beside
Valheim.exeunless the package’s structure explicitly requires it. - If BepInEx is already installed and you are updating only SkToolbox, place the SkToolbox DLL in
BepInEx/plugins. Replace the old SkToolbox DLL rather than leaving two versions active. - Launch Valheim, wait at the main menu, and check the BepInEx log for loading errors. Test
helpor/?before opening a valuable shared world.
The author’s installation mirror uses the same practical check: the game root should show the executable and the BepInEx directory together. If you cannot see Valheim.exe, UnityPlayer.dll, and BepInEx at that level, you are probably one folder too high or too low.
Verify that the mod loaded
Do not use a destructive command as your first test. Verification should establish that the loader, plugin, and command interface are all functioning:
- Launch the modded game, not an unmodded shortcut.
- At the main menu, avoid running gameplay commands. The current package lists errors from commands entered in the main menu as a known issue.
- Join a disposable local or copied world.
- Open Valheim’s console and enter
help. The slash form,/?, is also documented, and many commands can be entered in chat with a slash prefix. - Run a read-only or low-impact command such as
/coords, then close and reopen the console to ensure the interface remains responsive. - If no SkToolbox commands appear, exit the game and inspect the BepInEx log before changing world files.
Command availability depends on the installed release and the context in which you run it. A command shown in an old video or forum post may have been renamed, aliased, restricted, or removed.

Using the console and chat commands
Open Valheim’s developer console using the key configured for your setup, then type a command and press Enter. SkToolbox also supports many commands from chat by prefixing them with a slash. The package documentation specifically states that /? works as a chat command as well as a console help request.
Use the following examples as a starting point, not as a guaranteed list for every build:
| Command example | Typical purpose | Operational caution |
|---|---|---|
/give |
Add an item or quantity to a player’s inventory. | Confirm item names and quantities in the in-game help; inventory changes may affect a shared progression system. |
/spawn |
Create an item, creature, or other supported entity. | Large or hostile spawns can overwhelm a base or a server. |
/heal |
Restore health according to the command’s supported syntax. | Check the help output for target and parameter rules. |
/tp |
Teleport a player or use a supported teleport form. | Teleportation can strand a player, bypass exploration, or place someone in danger. |
/coords |
Display coordinate information. | Useful as a low-impact first test of command loading. |
/seed |
Show the world seed where supported. | Run it after joining the intended world, not from the main menu. |
/listskills |
List skill information. | Read-only in normal use, but syntax may vary by release. |
/stopevent |
Stop a supported world event. | Use only when the group agrees; it changes the shared encounter. |
/spawntamed |
Spawn a tamed creature where supported. | Check whether the command requires a creature identifier and where the result appears. |
/optterrain |
Run the package’s terrain-optimization operation. | Back up the world first; terrain operations can have persistent effects and should be tested on a copy. |
For exact arguments, targets, aliases, and permissions, enter help or /? in the installed version. If a command is accepted but produces an unexpected result, stop and check its syntax rather than repeating it.
Does SkToolbox need to be installed on the server?
For SkToolbox itself, the package is described as client-side. A player who wants to open the console and use SkToolbox normally installs BepInEx and SkToolbox on that player’s Valheim client. The dedicated server does not automatically receive the mod merely because one player has it.
That answer is different from the question of whether a server needs its own mod framework. A dedicated server may require a separate BepInEx installation and a separate server-side mod workflow when the operator wants server-side mods. General Valheim server guides describe BepInEx-enabled server scripts and manager deployment, but those instructions are not a promise that every host supports SkToolbox or any other client package. Confirm the host’s current mod policy, file access, restart procedure, and backup system before changing a production server.
Players without SkToolbox can usually join a world hosted by someone using it, but they will not have the mod’s local command interface. They can still experience world or player changes made by another participant. That is why installation status and permission rules should be discussed before anyone runs commands.
Multiplayer safety and server-owner policy
Skrip’s documentation warns users to exercise discretion because commands can affect other players’ gameplay. Treat SkToolbox as an administrative tool, not a private cheat toggle, when it is used in a shared world.

Agree on who may use commands
Write a short server rule before enabling the mod: identify administrators, state which commands are allowed, and decide whether commands are permitted only for recovery or also for building and experimentation. Chat commands are visible to people in the session, but visibility is not a substitute for permission.
Back up before high-impact operations
Keep a copy of the world save before using terrain, spawn, inventory, event, or teleport commands. For a dedicated server, stop the server cleanly before copying saves if the host’s instructions require it. Store at least one backup outside the active save directory so a failed rollback cannot overwrite both copies.
Test on a disposable copy
Reproduce unfamiliar syntax in a copied world. This is especially important for /optterrain, high-volume /spawn use, commands that target another player, and any command whose help text includes a warning. A test copy also reveals whether a command is accepted by your exact Valheim and SkToolbox versions.
Plan recovery
If a command produces an unwanted result, stop issuing further commands, record the world and player names, and restore the most recent clean backup. Do not assume that running the inverse command will repair terrain, item stacks, creature states, or skill changes.

The mod’s client-side status does not remove the distinction between operating your own server and renting managed infrastructure.
| Factor | Self-managed or local server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Direct access to game files, BepInEx scripts, logs, and startup parameters. | Access depends on the provider’s control panel, supported mod list, and file-management tools. |
| Maintenance | You handle Valheim updates, BepInEx changes, mod updates, restarts, and troubleshooting. | The provider handles hardware and basic service operation, but you still manage compatible mods and configuration. |
| Mod support | You can usually choose your own workflow, subject to your operating system and network setup. | Verify that the host permits BepInEx, supports the required server-side components, and allows the versions you need. |
| Backups | You must schedule, test, and store backups yourself. | Check retention, restore controls, download access, and whether backups run before updates. |
| Cost | Uses your existing hardware and connection, with your own electricity and administration time. | Requires a recurring hosting fee; the exact price and included features vary by provider and plan. |
Because SkToolbox is client-side, hosting a server does not by itself install it for players. A host may still impose separate rules for server-side BepInEx files, and those rules can change after a Valheim or host-platform update. Verify current compatibility directly with the host before committing a shared world.
Why SkToolbox may stop working after a Valheim update
A Valheim update can change game assemblies, console behavior, input handling, or the loader environment that a mod expects. Historical SkToolbox pages show that compatibility and behavior changed between releases, so instructions written for 1.8.4 should not be treated as authoritative for 1.10.5.

Use this order when diagnosing a failure:
- Check the SkToolbox package page for the version currently installed and its supported Valheim context.
- Confirm that Valheim itself launches, then confirm BepInEx loads without SkToolbox. A loader failure must be fixed before plugin troubleshooting.
- Verify that only one SkToolbox DLL is present in
BepInEx/plugins. Duplicate old and new files can create conflicts. - Read the BepInEx log from the same launch method you use for gameplay. Look for a missing dependency, assembly-load error, duplicate plugin, or exception naming SkToolbox.
- Launch a copied world and test
helpor/?. Do not test by immediately running a terrain or inventory command. - If the command list loads but one command fails, compare its current help syntax and context requirements. A command bug is not proof that the installation is broken.
- Update BepInEx and SkToolbox in a controlled order, keeping the previous files and a world backup so you can roll back.
Known 1.10.5 behavior and failure modes
The current listing for SkToolbox 1.10.5 identifies known issues involving command aliasing, autorun, command chaining, hotkeys, autocomplete for some commands, and errors when commands are run from the main menu. These limitations explain several symptoms that otherwise look like a failed install:
- An alias does nothing: use the full command shown by
helpinstead of relying on an older alias. - Autocomplete is incomplete: type the documented syntax manually and check spelling; absence from autocomplete does not necessarily mean the command is unavailable.
- Chained commands fail: run each command separately while testing. A parser or alias issue can make a valid individual command appear broken when combined.
- A hotkey does not trigger: test the command from the console or chat first, then inspect key conflicts and the package configuration.
- Autorun behaves unexpectedly: disable autorun while troubleshooting and verify one command at a time.
- An error appears at the main menu: join the target world before running gameplay commands, because the package documents main-menu command errors.
Keep the exact error text and the BepInEx log entry when asking for help. Include your Valheim build, SkToolbox version, BepInEx version, launch method, and whether the failure occurs in a new test world or only in an existing save.
Updating, disabling, and removing SkToolbox
Updating through a manager
Back up the profile and world, record the currently working versions, then update SkToolbox through the manager. Launch once without joining the production world, check the log, and test help in a disposable save. If the update fails, revert the package or switch back to the saved profile rather than mixing files from different versions.
Updating manually
Exit Valheim, copy the existing SkToolbox DLL to a dated backup location, and replace it with the new DLL in BepInEx/plugins. Keep BepInEx unchanged until you have confirmed whether the problem is specific to SkToolbox. If the new package requires a loader update, update BepInEx separately and test after each change.
Temporarily disabling the mod
With a manager, disable SkToolbox in the active profile. With a manual installation, move the SkToolbox DLL out of BepInEx/plugins to a backup folder outside the game directory. Do not delete your world saves to disable a plugin.

Removing it completely
Remove only the SkToolbox plugin files you installed, then leave BepInEx in place if other mods depend on it. If you also want to remove BepInEx, follow its own uninstall procedure and restore a clean game installation; deleting random folders can leave a partially modded setup that is harder to diagnose.
A practical first-session checklist
- Valheim launches unmodded before changes.
- BepInEx is installed in the same game root as
Valheim.exeandUnityPlayer.dll. - SkToolbox is enabled by the chosen profile or its DLL is in
BepInEx/plugins. - The game was launched through the same manager or shortcut used during testing.
- The BepInEx log shows no missing SkToolbox dependency.
- A copied or disposable world is ready.
helpor/?displays the current command reference.- The server group has agreed who may run commands.
- A current world backup exists before any persistent command is used.
Frequently asked questions
Can a player without SkToolbox join my modded world?
Usually, yes, because SkToolbox is described as client-side. That player will not have its local command interface, but they can still experience changes made to the shared world or to player states. Compatibility with other mods and the server’s own requirements should still be tested rather than assumed.

Is installing only the SkToolbox DLL enough?
No. BepInEx is a required dependency. The DLL belongs in BepInEx/plugins only after a working BepInEx setup exists in the correct Valheim game root.
Why does an old tutorial show commands that my installation rejects?
SkToolbox behavior changed across Valheim and mod releases, and older pages include versions such as 1.8.4. Use the help or /? output generated by your installed package instead of copying historical syntax.
