Skilled Trades vs. College: When a Trade Career Is a Viable Alternative

Skilled trades can be a viable alternative to college for some people. Compare specific occupations, local training and licensing, wages, costs, and work conditions before deciding.

Skilled trades can be a strong alternative to a traditional college degree, but they are not a universal substitute. The right choice depends on the specific occupation, local openings and pay, training costs, licensing, working conditions, and what kind of work you want to do. Apprenticeships can combine paid employment with classroom instruction; that does not by itself prove that a trade pathway costs less overall or offers a better lifetime financial return.

Are skilled trades a good alternative to college?

For someone who prefers hands-on work and can access a sound training route in a trade with local opportunity, a trade career may be a practical alternative to a four-year degree. The label “skilled trades” covers very different jobs. Electricians, plumbers, and heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) technicians have distinct training routes, licensing rules, working conditions, and labor-market outlooks.

National figures can help you frame the choice, but they are not an individual forecast. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports occupation-wide median wages and projected employment changes; actual opportunities and earnings depend on location, experience, specialization, and other factors.

Occupation National median annual wage Projected employment growth
Electricians $63,190 in May 2025 (BLS) 9% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS)
Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters $63,800 in May 2025 (BLS) 7% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS)
HVAC mechanics and installers $61,010 in May 2025 (BLS) 11% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS)

These are national occupation-wide medians, not starting salaries, guaranteed wages, or estimates of what a new apprentice will earn. Projected growth is not a promise of a job, and national projections do not establish demand in a particular town or state. See the BLS outlooks for electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, and HVAC mechanics and installers.

How do trade wages compare with college earnings?

BLS data for 2025 show that full-time workers age 25 and over with a bachelor’s degree had median weekly earnings of $1,578 and unemployment of 2.8%. For high school graduates in the same age and worker categories, the figures were $966 and 4.3%. These broad education-level averages are not a direct comparison between trade apprentices or experienced tradespeople and college graduates. The data do not show that a degree alone caused the difference or that a specific trade will outperform a degree.

The 2025 annual estimates exclude October because of the federal shutdown, so they are not strictly comparable with full-year averages. BLS also notes that its education categories do not account for apprenticeship and other on-the-job training. Read the details in BLS’s 2025 education earnings data.

How does apprenticeship work, and do apprentices get paid?

Apprenticeship is a structured way to learn a trade while working. In electrician apprenticeships, BLS says most apprenticeships last four or five years and typically include 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year, alongside technical instruction. Apprentices earn less than fully trained electricians, with pay increasing as they develop their skills. Instruction can cover electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics, code requirements, safety, and first aid.

Most plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters also learn through a four- or five-year apprenticeship. Classroom instruction can include safety, plumbing codes and regulations, blueprint reading, mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. The U.S. Department of Labor’s construction apprenticeship fact sheet identifies electricians, HVAC technicians, plumbers and pipefitters, and welders among construction apprenticeship occupations. Use the Department of Labor’s construction apprenticeship fact sheet and official apprenticeship resources as starting points, then verify program openings, eligibility, wages, and sponsors locally.

How long does it take to qualify, and what credentials are required?

Electricians

Electricians generally need a high school diploma or equivalent. Most states require a license, and requirements vary by state or locality. Check the relevant licensing board for required experience, exams, and any other qualifications before choosing a program. BLS outlines the typical route in its electrician occupation profile.

Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters

Most enter through a four- or five-year apprenticeship. Most states and some localities require licensing, but the pathway and exam requirements depend on where you plan to work. Confirm the rules with the relevant licensing authority; BLS describes the occupation and typical preparation in its plumbing and pipefitting profile.

HVAC mechanics and installers

HVAC mechanics and installers typically need a postsecondary nondegree award followed by long-term on-the-job training. Requirements and credentials can vary with the job and location, so check local employers and relevant authorities. BLS describes preparation and job conditions in its HVAC occupation profile.

Is trade school cheaper than college?

There is no single reliable answer without comparing actual programs. A paid apprenticeship can bring in wages while you train, but that does not establish that every trade route has a lower total cost than college. Training expenses, pay during training, and time out of paid work vary. Compare the full financial picture for the specific options you are considering:

  • Tuition, fees, tools, equipment, and required materials.
  • Apprentice wages or other income during training, and how that pay changes over time.
  • Grants, other financial aid, debt, and any licensing or exam expenses.
  • Income you may forgo while studying, including the length of each route before you qualify for your target job.
  • Whether a program is recognized by employers or meets the licensing rules where you intend to work.

The available national data do not provide a like-for-like total-cost comparison between trade training and college. Calculate costs and likely income for actual local programs rather than relying on the claim that trades are always cheaper.

What is the work and lifestyle like?

Job conditions matter as much as pay. HVAC work can involve cramped spaces, outdoor work, temperature extremes, evening or weekend shifts, overtime, and seasonal peaks. The details differ by employer and role, and the demands of other trades differ too. Ask people in the occupation and prospective employers about typical hours, travel, physical demands, safety practices, and the mix of indoor and outdoor work before committing.

Consider whether you want a job centered on hands-on tasks and whether you are comfortable with the specific work environment. Also think beyond the first job: licensing, specialization, supervisory roles, and business ownership can shape a career, but their availability and requirements depend on the trade and jurisdiction.

How should you choose between a trade path and college?

Compare real alternatives rather than “the trades” against “college” as if each were a single route. For each option, gather local information and weigh:

  • Time and structure: program length, classroom instruction, paid work, and the time required to qualify.
  • Net cost and income: tuition, fees, tools, wages, aid, debt, and earnings forgone during training.
  • Local opportunity: verified openings, local pay, access to training, and regional demand.
  • Work and lifestyle: physical demands, safety exposure, schedule, travel, seasonality, and work setting.
  • Credentials and mobility: licensing, exams, advancement, specialization, and possible paths into supervision or business ownership.
  • Longer-term fit: your interest in hands-on work or academic study, the specific occupation or field, and your career goals.

Start by identifying one or two occupations or degree programs that appeal to you. Then check local training options and licensing rules, ask programs and employers about costs and actual apprentice wages, and compare the routes using the same time horizon. A choice grounded in that local detail is more useful than assuming a trade or a degree is automatically the better investment.
