Mohan’s Skill Exchange checkout uses two payment paths: international buyers pay in USD through PayPal, while Indian buyers pay in INR through Razorpay with UPI. The key design choice is to let buyers select a currency—and therefore a payment route—instead of treating location as a reliable proxy for what they can or want to use.
This is Mohan’s account of an implementation, published August 2, 2026, not a current provider-policy guide or a measured conversion study. Its useful lessons are architectural: make currency explicit, keep a choice available, preserve the transaction’s original terms, and verify payment against the provider’s record.

How the checkout routes Indian and international buyers
Mohan describes a split checkout: PayPal for USD purchases and Razorpay for INR purchases, including UPI for Indian buyers. Rather than asking one provider to cover every buyer and payment method, the checkout uses the buyer’s currency selection to choose the payment path.
“The important design decision is that the buyer chooses the rail, at checkout, by choosing a currency.”

The currency selector remains visible. In Mohan’s implementation, the browser timezone only supplies an initial default: Asia/Kolkata or Asia/Calcutta selects INR, and other timezones select USD. A buyer can override that default.
That distinction matters for people travelling or living outside India who still prefer an Indian payment method, as well as Indian buyers using a device configured for another region. A timezone is a convenience signal, not proof of residence or payment preference. As Mohan puts it, “A timezone heuristic is wrong for NRIs and travellers — which is exactly why it’s only a default, never a lock.”

How to price an INR option without treating an example rate as live FX
Mohan’s sample helper starts from a USD-denominated catalogue value, applies a configurable INR_RATE, rounds to the nearest ₹100, subtracts ₹1 to reach a ₹x99 price point, and returns the result in paise. In his 2026 code example, INR_RATE = 86. That is an implementation parameter, not a verified current exchange rate or a recommendation for setting prices.

| USD catalogue example | INR example in Mohan’s helper |
|---|---|
| $5 | ₹399 |
| $6 | ₹499 |
| $9 | ₹799 |
| $12 | ₹999 |
| $15 | ₹1,299 |
These figures illustrate the helper’s rounding behavior; they are not observed market prices. A production pricing rule needs an owner and a process for updating its conversion parameter, since an example constant should not silently become a promise to use a particular exchange rate. Nor does the article establish that this pricing pattern improves conversion: it reports no controlled comparison or conversion data.

What to preserve in the transaction ledger
Store the amount together with its currency. A value of 5000 is ambiguous without knowing whether it represents USD cents or INR paise. The transaction record should also retain the commission rate or commission amount used when the sale occurred, rather than recalculating old transactions using today’s rate.
Mohan reports that Skill Exchange’s commission changed from 10% to 5%. Freezing the transaction’s commission terms protects historical accounting when a marketplace changes its fee policy. Seller totals should be grouped by currency; adding USD cents and INR paise into one total would produce a number with no meaningful monetary interpretation.

Why payment confirmation belongs on the server
A browser can report that a checkout succeeded, but that report is not a trustworthy source for the amount, currency, buyer, or item to credit. Mohan’s rule is to confirm the provider-side record for the order the server opened, then match it to the intended buyer and purchase before writing the ledger.
PayPal path described by Mohan
- Capture the order server-side.
- Require the returned order status to be
COMPLETED. - Compare the order’s
custom_idwith the expected item and buyer.
Razorpay path described by Mohan
- Verify the checkout HMAC signature.
- Fetch the order and match its notes to the expected item and buyer.
- Record amount and currency from the fetched provider order, rather than trusting values sent by the browser.
These are the implementation steps in Mohan’s article, not a substitute for checking the providers’ current API documentation and security requirements before deployment. His broader principle is: “The rule is the same on both: the amount and currency you write to your ledger come from the provider’s record of the order you opened, cryptographically tied to the buyer — never from the client that’s telling you it paid.”

What Mohan’s PayPal testing does—and does not—establish
Mohan reports that, while testing with Indian buyer and merchant accounts, he encountered a domestic payment failure; he says international purchases worked in his tests. That is a report of his own test experience, not evidence of current PayPal policy or a guarantee about every account, transaction, or region.
His article also says PayPal stopped India-to-India domestic payments in April 2021, but the claim is not independently confirmed here against an official PayPal source. Anyone choosing a payment provider should verify its current India-specific rules and account eligibility directly before relying on that historical statement.
When a merchant-of-record approach may fit
Mohan’s article comments raise merchant-of-record services as another way to hand off some payment-method routing. That can be an alternative to building and maintaining separate provider paths, but naming a service is not the same as validating it for an Indian marketplace. Mohan mentions Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, and Polar as options he considered; their current India-facing capabilities and terms are not established by his account.
Before choosing that architecture, check the parts that determine whether it actually serves the business:
- Whether Indian buyers can pay using UPI and what the checkout experience is like.
- Whether the service accepts the seller’s country, business type, and onboarding profile.
- Total fees compared with direct processors and marketplace costs.
- Settlement currency, timing, and the reporting needed for seller balances.
- How much payment routing, tax handling, and reconciliation the service takes on.
The trade-off is operational: a managed route may reduce integration and reconciliation work, while a direct split gives the marketplace more control over the buyer’s payment paths and transaction records. The right choice depends on verified eligibility, methods, costs, and settlement behavior—not a generic claim that one architecture is simpler.
