Its Topological Attention Gate (TAG) feeds structural information into the segmentation decoder. In a 2026 Scientific Reports paper, the authors report IoU 0.676, F1-Score 0.781, and clDice 0.848 on CrackVision12K. Those are the paper’s results, not independent confirmation of performance in real-world inspections.
What is SkelTAG-Net?
SkelTAG-Net stands for Skeleton Topological Attention Gate Network. Wesley Vieira de Santana, Verusca Severo de Lima, and Francisco Madeiro describe it as a symmetric dual-stream deep learning model with a shared encoder. One stream performs crack segmentation; the other learns a supervised representation of the crack skeleton.

The design targets a specific difficulty in crack masks: a model may identify crack pixels yet fail to preserve how the cracks connect. The authors write that “preserving crack continuity, connectivity, and structural consistency remains challenging for conventional models.” Their approach uses the skeleton stream and TAG to make structural information available to the segmentation process.

The shared encoder supplies features to both streams. The segmentation stream predicts the crack mask, while the supervised skeleton stream provides a structural signal. The Topological Attention Gate injects structural information into the segmentation decoder, where it can inform the mask prediction.

The paper’s abstract reports the best overall performance among the comparisons it describes, which include CNN-based, Transformer-based, and hybrid architectures. It names U-Net and SegFormer-B2 as examples. The abstract alone does not establish whether all models used common test splits, preprocessing, thresholding, or comparable model sizes and inference costs. It also does not provide confidence intervals, test-set size, per-class results, or metric definitions. The scores therefore should not be read as proof of statistical significance or inspection accuracy.
Does the result establish readiness for infrastructure inspection?
No field validation is established by the accessible abstract. The authors present the findings as indicating potential for automated civil-structure inspection and support for structural health monitoring. That is a prospective application, not evidence that SkelTAG-Net has been deployed or validated in live inspection systems.
