In a 2026 first-person account, Serguey Shinder says his organization found 640 scheduled reports across four tools, but only 94 were opened by a person across a quarter. That distinction matters: the headline’s “six hundred” and “ninety” are rounded shorthand, and the 94 figure is quarterly—not monthly. The account describes how the team used that inventory to reduce a proposed migration’s scope, review stale recipients and retire reports, while preserving a way to restore reports that people still needed.
What the headline’s numbers actually mean
Shinder’s account, published on DEV Community in 2026, describes an inventory of 640 scheduled reports distributed by email or shared drive across four tools. It says 94 reports were opened by a human being across a quarter. The title rounds those figures to “six hundred” and “ninety,” but it does not mean 90 reports were read each month. The account does not explain how an “open” was detected or provide report-level logs, so the figures should be understood as the author’s reported findings, not independently audited usage data.

The immediate prompt was a supplier’s proposed per-report migration charge. Shinder says the quote seemed substantial, but names neither the supplier nor the reporting platform, and gives no quote amount or documentation of the pricing proposal. The account’s core point is therefore not a general claim about migration pricing; it is that the organization counted and reviewed its scheduled outputs before deciding what to move.
How the team decided what to stop
Shinder describes asking recipients to renew reports, with nonresponse treated as a request to stop delivery. The account says 420 reports were stopped; 19 prompted complaints and were reinstated the same day. The author regarded those reinstated reports as useful. That quick restoration path is an important part of the story: retiring a report was not treated as irreversible, and a complaint served as a signal to revisit a decision.

Counterfeit detection sensitivity can be adjusted or disabled, if desired.
- PRINT YOUR COUNT RESULTS: In addition to displaying your count results, the SB-901 can print a detailed report when equipped with the included SP-90 report printer. The printed report includes a detailed breakdown of your count results, including the total value counted, the number of bills counted, and the number and value of each denomination counted.
- USEFUL BUSINESS FEATURES: Save time with these useful features - Multi-Currency (USD & CAD), Batch Counting to prepare bills for bundling or strapping, Add Function to keep a running total of large counting jobs. Ideal for banks, casinos, law enforcement, retail businesses, dispensaries, churches, schools, restaurants and any other organization that handles cash regularly. Includes three-year warranty.
The account also says the team tagged regulatory outputs separately and exempted them from the stop process. It does not identify a jurisdiction or specific legal obligations. For another organization, that means the case is an example of a review approach—not a substitute for checking which reports support required filings, controls, or operational duties.
What the review found about recipients and sensitive data
Shinder says about 40 reports contained salary or customer details and were being sent to groups whose access was no longer justified. The account does not provide a security audit or establish that a particular law or regulation was breached. It does show why report cleanup is also an access review: scheduled delivery can keep exposing sensitive information to distribution lists that outlast their original business purpose.

For reports that remained, the author says the team assigned a named owner, a recorded reason, and an expiry date no more than a year away. These are controls reported in this case, not proof of compliance. An owner and rationale make it easier to ask whether a report still serves a need; a review date prevents “keep forever” from becoming the default.
What this case can—and cannot—tell you about migration savings
After reducing the scope, Shinder reports that the migration quote fell to one-third of its original amount. The account supplies no quote values, vendor identity, platform, or accounting evidence, so the reduction cannot be independently verified or generalized into an expected saving. It is a reported outcome from one organization’s account.

The more transferable lesson is about scope: before estimating a move, distinguish scheduled outputs that have evidence of use or a required purpose from those that no longer have a confirmed audience. Documenting recipient review, exceptions, ownership, and expiry also makes the migration decision easier to explain than relying on a raw count of scheduled reports.
A practical review sequence for a report estate
- Inventory scheduled outputs. Record where each report is generated, how it is delivered, its recipients, and any known owner. Shinder’s account covered four tools and both email and shared-drive delivery.
- Measure use with a stated window. Record the measurement period and what counts as use. In this case the reported 94 human opens covered a quarter; the account does not state the instrumentation or definition of an open.
- Check purpose and exceptions. Ask whether a report supports a current decision, operational process, or required obligation. Keep required outputs out of a routine retirement queue until the relevant owner has confirmed the requirement.
- Verify recipients and data sensitivity. Review distribution lists against current roles and check whether reports contain salary, customer, or other sensitive details. Restrict or change delivery where the recipient group no longer has a justified need.
- Request renewal and make reversals possible. Tell recipients what will stop and how to request reinstatement. In Shinder’s account, 19 reports were restored the same day after complaints.
- Assign ownership and a review date. Record a named owner, the reason to keep the report, and a finite expiry or review date. The case used dates no more than a year away.
- Recalculate migration scope. Use the reviewed inventory—not the original scheduled-report count—to define what needs to move, and retain the assumptions behind any estimate.
How to read the account
This is a first-person organizational case account, not a population study. Shinder says, “In eleven years I have never received a request to decommission a report,” which explains why a renewal request could reveal a large backlog. But the account does not identify the employer, share underlying data, or independently verify the process or outcomes. It supports a practical question—whether scheduled reports still have users, owners, and justified recipients—without proving that unread reports are useless or that the same result will follow elsewhere.
