Yes—but not as a Gemini app inside Siri. Apple’s new Siri AI uses Apple Foundation Models built in collaboration with Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. The user-facing assistant remains Apple’s Siri and Apple Intelligence layer, with stronger personal context, onscreen understanding, web answers and actions across Apple apps.
Is Siri powered by Gemini now?
Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration on January 12, 2026. Their statement says the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.

That does not turn Siri into the Google Gemini app. Apple says it custom-built the models in collaboration with Google, then integrated them into Apple Intelligence. Requests can be handled on the device or by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system, depending on the workload.
In practical terms, Gemini supplies underlying model technology and cloud infrastructure, while Apple controls Siri’s interface, operating-system integration, privacy design and app actions.

What does the Siri AI upgrade do?
Apple describes Siri AI, released with its 2027 software releases on September 14, 2026, as a more conversational assistant with personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge, onscreen awareness and more systemwide actions.
Personal context across Apple apps
Siri can use information from places such as Messages, Mail and Photos to answer requests. Examples include finding information in a conversation or photo library, locating details in email and using those details to help complete a task.
Writing, photo and sharing actions
The upgraded assistant can draft email, edit photos and share them. These are system actions rather than answers that merely appear in a chat window.

Onscreen awareness
Siri can answer questions about what is currently displayed on the iPhone. That enables requests tied to an article, image, conversation or other visible content without requiring you to describe everything manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCurrent web information
For questions that need up-to-date information, Siri can use web information. Availability and behavior can still vary by language, region, feature and device.
Which iPhones support Siri AI?
Apple Support lists the Siri AI beta on iOS 27 or later for an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model or later. Siri and the device must be set to a supported language.

- Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
- Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
| iPhone class | Siri AI beta eligibility | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro | Supported | iOS 27 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, and a supported Siri/device language |
| iPhone 15 Pro Max | Supported | iOS 27 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, and a supported Siri/device language |
| iPhone 16 models | Supported | iOS 27 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, and a supported Siri/device language |
| Earlier iPhone models | Not listed for the Siri AI beta | Apple’s documented iPhone eligibility starts with the 15 Pro/15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 generation |
Therefore, you do not specifically need an iPhone 16. An iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max also qualifies. A regular iPhone 15 is not included in Apple’s listed Siri AI classes.
Other Apple Intelligence hardware
Apple lists Apple Intelligence support on the iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPads with an M1 chip or later, Macs with M1 or later, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an enabled iPhone. That broader list describes Apple Intelligence support; individual Siri AI functions can still differ by device and operating system.
How Apple and Google split the technology
| Layer | What it does |
|---|---|
| Siri and Apple Intelligence | The user-facing assistant, personal context, onscreen understanding and actions in Apple apps |
| Apple Foundation Models | Apple’s models, custom-built in collaboration with Google’s Gemini models |
| On-device processing | Handles eligible requests locally on supported hardware |
| Private Cloud Compute | Processes demanding requests on Apple-controlled privacy infrastructure without exposing personal data, according to Apple |
| Google Cloud and NVIDIA infrastructure | Supports new demanding Apple Intelligence workloads, including agentic tool use and complex reasoning, under Apple’s extended Private Cloud Compute approach |
Apple’s security engineering documentation says the company is extending Private Cloud Compute to Google Cloud with NVIDIA hardware. This is infrastructure collaboration, not evidence that Siri sends every request to Google or that Google operates a separate Siri product.

- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.

How private is Siri AI?
Apple emphasizes a split between local processing and Private Cloud Compute. Apple says Private Cloud Compute does not store or expose personal data to Apple or any other party while processing requests, and that independent outside experts can verify the privacy properties.
Some advanced requests require servers. Apple’s security documentation says those workloads can run on Google Cloud hardware while remaining within the company’s stated Private Cloud Compute privacy commitments. The claim concerns the processing design; it does not mean every Siri request leaves the iPhone.
What privacy cannot guarantee
- A compatible device does not make every feature available in every language or country.
- Server processing is subject to Apple’s availability and policy controls.
- Apple says server-side Apple Intelligence features may have daily usage limits that vary with the feature, request complexity and demand.
Where is Siri AI available?
Language rollout
English is available first. Apple scheduled French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support for the following month. Siri and the iPhone must use a supported language, so changing only the language used for a request may not be enough.

Regional restrictions
| Region or market | Status described by Apple |
|---|---|
| Most supported markets outside the restrictions below | Rollout depends on the supported language, device and operating-system version |
| European Union | Initially unavailable on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS |
| China | Unavailable while Apple addresses regulatory requirements |
These are launch conditions, not a promise that the restrictions are permanent. Apple says availability varies, so a supported iPhone alone does not guarantee access.
Does Siri AI have usage limits?
Yes. Apple says server-side Apple Intelligence features can have daily limits. The limit may change according to the feature being used, how complex the request is, current demand and Apple policy. Apple has also said expanded access may be offered for a fee in the future, but no recurring price is established in the information available here.
On-device functions are not described with the same server quota language, but the exact split between local and cloud processing depends on the request and Apple’s implementation.
How Siri AI compares with the old Siri
| Capability | Earlier Siri experience | Siri AI upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | Short voice commands and answers | More conversational interactions with broader context |
| Personal context | Limited command-based access | Can work across information in Apple apps such as Messages, Mail and Photos |
| Screen understanding | Not the central documented capability | Can answer questions about onscreen content |
| Actions | Selected system commands | Broader actions including drafting email, editing photos and sharing them |
| Knowledge | Answers based on Siri’s existing services | Can use web information for current topics |
| Model source | Earlier Apple assistant systems | Apple Foundation Models built with Google Gemini model technology and cloud infrastructure |
| Processing | Varied by feature | On-device processing plus Private Cloud Compute for demanding workloads |
What to check before expecting the upgrade
- Confirm that the iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 16-or-later model.
- Update to iOS 27 or later.
- Enable Apple Intelligence if the setting is offered on the device.
- Set Siri and the device to a language supported in your rollout.
- Check whether your country is affected by the EU or China restrictions.
- Expect beta behavior and possible server-side daily limits, especially for complex requests.
What the Gemini connection means for buyers
The collaboration matters because it changes the models and infrastructure behind Siri, not because buyers receive a separate Gemini-branded assistant. The practical benefits Apple is promising are deeper access to Apple-app context, onscreen understanding and cross-app actions. The practical qualifications are equally important: only newer hardware is eligible, English leads the rollout, the EU and China have launch restrictions, and server-based features can be limited.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Siri AI is Apple’s upgraded assistant built on Apple Foundation Models developed with Google Gemini technology. You do not need an iPhone 16 if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, but you do need a supported device, iOS 27 or later, a supported language and a region where the beta is available.
