For a single self-contained page file, choose the SingleFile/SingleFileZ lineage; for a browsable, searchable collection with multiple archive formats, choose WebScrapBook. One important status detail: the SingleFileZ project says it has been completely merged into SingleFile, whose “File format” option can save self-extracting pages. WebScrapBook is the more collection-focused option, but some of its search and remote-management capabilities depend on its PyWebScrapBook backend.
What changed with SingleFileZ?
SingleFileZ’s distinctive output is a self-extracting HTML file that also works as a ZIP archive containing the page’s resources. The project repository now says SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile and directs users to SingleFile’s “File format” option for self-extracting files. Treat SingleFileZ as a format and project lineage within SingleFile, rather than as a separate actively maintained extension. See the SingleFileZ repository and the SingleFile README.

If you already have SingleFileZ archives, they remain files you can keep and test in a browser; the project-status change concerns where the feature is maintained, not a claim that existing archives have stopped working.

Choose SingleFile when a page-sized archive is the goal
Use SingleFile’s self-extracting format when you want to save a page and its resources as one file that is relatively easy to move, attach, or store without managing a companion folder. SingleFile also documents annotation tools, so it can suit a workflow that captures individual pages and adds notes or highlights rather than curating a large tree of material.
There are practical trade-offs. The SingleFileZ FAQ says opening the self-extracting page requires JavaScript. It also notes that Chrome restricts some behavior when such a file is opened from the filesystem, and that saving or opening may take longer than with SingleFile. Exact behavior depends on browser and settings; see the SingleFileZ FAQ.
SingleFile’s README also lists capture caveats, including certain browser-internal or add-on pages, some canvas and video snapshots, and some sandboxed frames. If a page matters for legal, research, or long-term preservation purposes, save a sample and verify the result in the browser you expect to use.

Choose WebScrapBook for a managed collection
WebScrapBook is a better fit when the archive is not just a pile of files. Its documented workflow supports hierarchical scrapbooks, multiple archive forms, notes, editing and annotation, and indexed full-text search. That organization can make it easier to retrieve a saved page later or keep related research together.
Separate basic local capture from features that require a service component. WebScrapBook marks some collection, search, and remote-access capabilities as dependent, wholly or partly, on its PyWebScrapBook backend. If you do not want to install or maintain a backend, check the specific feature you need before choosing it; do not assume all advertised collection functions work in a browser-only setup. The project’s feature and setup details are in the WebScrapBook documentation.
For mobile use, WebScrapBook documents Firefox for Android and Kiwi, and says iOS is unsupported. Its documentation also lists Chromium-based and Firefox-based desktop browsers. Browser extension availability can change, so confirm support for your current browser and device before building a workflow around it.

Privacy and preservation considerations
The SingleFileZ FAQ says processing happens in the browser and that it does not upload data to third-party servers. This is a statement about SingleFileZ’s documented workflow; it is not evidence for a blanket privacy comparison covering every WebScrapBook configuration, particularly one that uses remote services.
Neither documented format guarantees that a saved page will behave exactly like the live site. Dynamic content, browser restrictions, media, frames, and site changes can affect the result. For important material, keep the original URL and capture date with the archive, test the saved file offline, and retain another copy using a format or storage method appropriate to your preservation needs.

Can SingleFile open a SingleFileZ archive?
SingleFile’s “File format” option now provides the self-extracting format that the SingleFileZ project says was merged into SingleFile. Test any important existing archive in your target browser, especially if opening it from the filesystem.

Does WebScrapBook require PyWebScrapBook?
Not for every basic local capture. Some collection, search, and remote-access capabilities depend on the PyWebScrapBook backend; check the project documentation for the particular feature you plan to use.
Which is better for saving a page to read offline?
For one self-contained page file, use SingleFile’s self-extracting format. For organizing and searching a collection, WebScrapBook is the closer fit.
