Both SingleFile and Save Page WE save a displayed webpage as a single HTML file, but neither is proven to preserve every site more faithfully. Choose SingleFile if you value its documented annotation, auto-save, output-format and browser options. Choose Save Page WE if its Basic, Standard or Custom Items presets, URL-list workflow or save-method controls better fit how you archive. For pages that matter, try the extensions on representative sites and inspect the saved files offline before relying on them.

What the two extensions save—and what that does not guarantee

Both extensions are designed to package a displayed webpage and selected resources into one HTML file for offline access. Save Page WE’s official Mozilla Add-ons listing says it saves a page “as currently displayed” as a single HTML file; SingleFile’s project describes its purpose as saving a complete webpage into one HTML file. These are product descriptions, not independent guarantees that every image, interaction or page state will survive intact.

A saved page is a copy of what the extension could capture from the browser at save time. Pages that depend on a live account, server response, or dynamic content may not behave offline as they did online. No controlled head-to-head comparison establishes which extension is more faithful across real websites.

How their features differ

Decision SingleFile Save Page WE
Output Primarily a single HTML file. Its project also compares self-extracting ZIP, MHTML, Safari Web Archive and HTML-plus-folder formats. A single HTML file.
Browser coverage The project lists Chrome, Firefox desktop and mobile, Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser and Opera. The listing describes Firefox and Chrome versions with the same functions and user interfaces.
Capture workflow Current tab, selected content or frame, and multiple tabs; annotation with highlights, notes and content removal; auto-save. Selected tabs or a list of URLs; Basic, Standard or Custom Items; save delay and other save controls.
Resources and scripts Resources may be downloaded even if they are not visible or already cached. Scripts are removed by default because they can change rendering and are not guaranteed to work offline. Presets cover HTML, images, stylesheets and fonts, with audio/video, embeds and scripts in same-origin frames depending on the preset. Controls include lazy content and cross-origin frames. Scripts do not execute by default.
Destinations and save methods Documents saving to the browser download folder and destinations such as Google Drive and GitHub; its site also lists WebDAV and other destinations. The Firefox listing documents saved HTML files, configurable names and local save methods.

Format and store support can vary by browser and extension version. SingleFile’s format comparison notes that MHTML and Safari Web Archive viewing support varies by browser. If you need a specific format, cloud destination or mobile installation, verify that it is available for your current browser and device before building a workflow around it.

#1 Best Overall

Which extension fits your workflow?

Choose SingleFile when its options matter

  • You want to annotate a page with highlights or notes, or remove content as part of saving.
  • You want the documented auto-save or multiple-tab workflow.
  • You need one of the additional archive formats its project compares, or its listed browser coverage matches your setup.
  • You want to investigate documented cloud destinations such as Google Drive or GitHub.

Choose Save Page WE when its capture controls matter

  • You want to select Basic, Standard or Custom Items for the resources included.
  • You plan to save a list of URLs or selected tabs.
  • You want the configurable save methods or delay described in its listing.
  • You want controls for lazy content, frames and resource selection.

These are feature-based recommendations, not claims that one extension wins a fidelity test. Select the extension whose documented controls suit the pages and archiving routine you actually use.

How to test an archive before trusting it

  1. Pick representative pages. Include a straightforward article and at least one page with lazy-loaded images, embedded media or interactive content.
  2. Save with default settings first. This gives you a useful baseline before changing which resources or scripts are included.
  3. Disconnect or otherwise go offline, then open each saved file. Check whether the expected text, images, layout and links remain usable.
  4. Compare settings only when something important is missing. Review resource selection, lazy-content handling, frame controls and script behavior; including more resources can affect file size and still does not ensure a page will replay correctly.
  5. Keep context with important copies. Record the original URL and capture date alongside the file. An offline HTML copy should not be treated as a permanent, legally authoritative or necessarily complete record.

Offline behavior and practical limits

Scripts and interaction

Both tools describe scripts as restricted by default rather than promising full offline execution. That is sensible for an archive: a script may depend on a live service or change how a page renders. A saved page may therefore preserve readable content while losing interactive behavior.

Hidden and delayed resources

SingleFile notes that it may download page resources that are not displayed or already cached. Save Page WE exposes resource presets and controls related to lazy content and frames. These settings influence what goes into the archive; they do not establish that every off-screen, embedded or dynamically requested item will be captured.

Formats and portability

A single HTML file is convenient to move and open, but formats beyond HTML can have browser-specific viewing limitations. Check the target browser if you choose MHTML or Safari Web Archive rather than assuming every browser will display them the same way.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative when you need a visual record

If your goal is a picture or PDF of a page rather than an offline HTML archive, try ScreenshotNeo. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, so it serves a different purpose from either extension: it captures a visual result, not a self-contained page for later browsing.

For example, its API accepts one GET request for a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and response details:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo says cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets can be removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are not billed; and its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. It is useful for visual capture, not a substitute for an offline HTML archive. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
