If a SingleFile webpage archive is too large, start by enabling Compress HTML content and Remove unused styles, then remove unused or alternative fonts. These settings target redundant markup and assets before you sacrifice page content or image quality. Save a representative page and reopen it offline after each change: the best balance depends on what that page contains.
Reduce file size without first cutting page content
Open SingleFile’s options and look for the following settings. Labels can vary with the installed release, so check the current options help if a label differs.

Compress HTML and remove unused styles
Enable Compress HTML content. SingleFile’s options help says this reduces file size without altering the document by removing comments and unnecessary tags, spaces, quotes, and whitespace. Also enable Remove unused styles: unused CSS can take up substantial space, though identifying and removing it can increase CPU use and save time.

Enable removal of unused or alternative fonts if those options are available. A page may embed font files that it does not need in the saved view; trimming these can reduce the archive without resizing the images you care about.

Trim repeated or alternative image assets
If the archive remains large, check the image-related cleanup options. Removing alternative-resolution images can avoid keeping image variants that the saved page does not need. For output formats that support it, grouping duplicate images can prevent the same image from being saved repeatedly. SingleFile ignores duplicate-image grouping for ZIP-based formats, so do not expect that option to reduce a ZIP archive.
Reduce image dimensions when cleanup is not enough
SingleFile’s size reduction factor is a divisor applied to PNG, JPEG, and WebP image dimensions. The default factor is 1, which makes no reduction; a factor of 2 halves each dimension, and 4 reduces each dimension to a quarter. Try 2 before 4, then inspect images and layout. Smaller dimensions do not mean the archive will shrink by the same proportion.

The image-quality setting applies to resized JPEG and WebP images and defaults to 0.8. It does not affect PNG. Lowering quality may make resized JPEG or WebP images less sharp; compare the saved page at the size you will actually view or print it.

- Remove frames or iframes: can considerably reduce size, but embedded content may disappear.
- Remove hidden elements: may reduce size, but requires additional processing and can remove content that is hidden in the original page.
- Maximum resource size: excludes oversized embedded resources, which can include images, stylesheets, scripts, and iframes. This is a hard omission threshold, not lossless compression.
For each setting, check the result offline for missing embedded tools, images, formatting, or interactive content. If completeness matters more than size, leave omission rules off.
A practical order for changing settings
- Enable HTML compression, unused-style removal, and removal of unused or alternative fonts.
- Save a representative page and open the resulting file offline. Check that its layout and important content remain intact.
- If it is still too large, remove alternative-resolution images and, where supported by your output format, group duplicate images.
- For image-heavy pages, try a size reduction factor of 2. Increase it only if the image quality remains acceptable.
- If you can lose embedded material, consider frame removal or a maximum resource size. Reopen the saved file and check what was omitted.
There is no standard savings percentage to expect: the result depends on the page’s mix of markup, styles, fonts, images, and embedded resources. SingleFile’s official FAQ says its default configuration is already optimized to produce small pages.

Settings that can make the result larger or slower
- Keep ZIP compression enabled if reducing file size is the goal. SingleFile’s help says disabling it increases the resulting file size.
- Expect more processing when removing unused styles or hidden elements; those operations can increase CPU consumption or save time.
- Deferred content affects completeness and time. Saving deferred content can add material and take longer. Disabling deferred-image saving, or disabling frame removal, may mean some resources are missing.
Troubleshooting an oversized or incomplete archive
The archive is still large after cleanup
Check whether the page is dominated by large images or embedded resources. Try image resizing gradually, or set a maximum resource size only if omitting oversized items is acceptable. The size may not change much if the page does not contain much removable markup, unused CSS, or duplicate assets.

Images look soft or details are missing
Reduce the size reduction factor or return it to 1. If resized JPEG or WebP images remain too soft, raise their quality setting. PNG is not affected by that quality setting.

Embedded content or styling is missing
Review frame removal, hidden-element removal, and the maximum resource size threshold. These can remove content or resources. Also check whether deferred-image saving was disabled; that can leave some images out.
The save takes longer than expected
Unused-style removal and hidden-element removal can require more processing. Saving deferred content can also increase save time. If speed matters more than the smallest archive, disable the more intensive cleanup options and compare the result.

If you need a screenshot rather than a self-contained webpage archive, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, so it does not produce a SingleFile-style offline HTML archive. The request below captures a screenshot:
