Single-Molecule Magnetic Memory Shows Hysteresis Near Room Temperature

An iron-triazole complex displayed temperature-history-dependent spin crossover near room temperature, a research milestone rather than a usable storage device.

A single iron-based molecular complex showed a memory-like magnetic response near room temperature: its spin state depended on the temperatures it had previously experienced. The result, reported as a research milestone in 2022, is a materials-chemistry demonstration—not a working computer memory or a product you can buy.

What the study demonstrated

Andrea Moneo-Corcuera and colleagues studied an iron-triazole polyanionic spin-crossover complex. In spin crossover, a metal complex changes between electronic spin states, altering its magnetic behavior. The team observed thermal hysteresis: the transition followed a different path as temperature rose than as it fell. That history dependence is the basis for calling the behavior memory-like.

The study reported that hysteresis persisted after the complex was diluted in solid mixtures and in liquid solution. Those results support a contribution from the individual molecular complex, rather than requiring the strong cooperative interactions normally associated with thermal memory effects in bulk spin-crossover materials. The authors also presented magnetic and spectroscopic evidence; reporting on the work described a visible color change between states.

How the molecular memory effect works

For a spin state to act as a memory-like state during a temperature cycle, it must not relax immediately when conditions change. In this complex, relaxation was slow enough for a hysteresis loop to appear over the measured cycle. The observed state therefore depended on the sample’s thermal history.

The authors used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explain the slow relaxation: their interpretation is that a molecular-level energy barrier makes switching between spin states difficult. This is the study’s proposed explanation for the result, not a universal design rule established for all molecular memories.

Why “near room temperature” matters—and what “first” means

The paper’s title says “near room temperature,” a more precise description than an unqualified claim that the memory works at room temperature. News coverage in 2022 presented the finding as a first for this kind of single-molecule memory behavior. That “first” refers to the reported research milestone, not to a first commercial memory device.

Why this is not a usable computer memory

The experiment demonstrated molecular behavior, not an integrated storage device. It did not show that the complex can write, retain, and retrieve files, or that it can outperform conventional memory. No practical electronics energy savings have been demonstrated.

The switching in the reported work was controlled by temperature. Chemistry World noted that gradual temperature transitions would be needed for recording and that fast writing is a challenge. José Ramón Galán-Mascarós of ICIQ described the result as “a single-molecule memory that works at room temperature.” Roberta Sessoli of the University of Florence called the temperature switch “not very handy”—a comment that reflects the gradual thermal control and slow-writing challenge, not a rejection of the molecular result.

Activating the transition with light, pressure, or electricity was discussed as future work, not demonstrated functionality. Data storage remains a possible application rather than a capability established by this study.
