Applicants verify through Singpass and answer a questionnaire; the pilot uses those preferences to recommend limited, curated pairings. As of 1 October 2026, GovTech had made no decision about expanding it. The pilot arrives amid Singapore’s falling fertility rate, but there is no evidence that FirstDate has increased marriages or births.
Who can sign up for FirstDate?
GovTech describes FirstDate as a pilot for singles aged 21–35 verified through Singpass. CNA reported the more specific eligibility as unmarried public officers in that age range. It is therefore not generally available to Singapore residents or to everyone who wants to use a dating app. The reported pilot also excludes matches between colleagues from the same government agency. GovTech said the pilot began on 29 September 2026. Applications were reported to close on 5 October at 23:59, with matching to start after sign-ups closed. Because this is a time-limited pilot, those dates should not be read as an ongoing application window. CNA The Straits Times
How does the matching process work?
The project began with a question from GovTech officers: “does having more potential matches necessarily make it easier to find a suitable match?” The team developed the idea at GovTech’s annual {build} hackathon and is testing it across the Public Service. Instead of presenting a large catalogue of profiles, FirstDate is designed around a smaller number of introductions.

- Apply and verify. Applicants sign in through Singpass.
- Answer preference questions. The questionnaire covers interests, habits, values and preferences.
- Receive a suggested pairing. GovTech says its algorithm applies the Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage approach to preferences. A user may receive one match in a cycle, with a compatibility score, description and personal note; a match is not guaranteed in every cycle.
- Choose whether to accept. Both people have 72 hours to accept. Contact details are unlocked only if both agree.
- Decide whether to meet. If they do, users can try suggested “Date Quests” and report back through a short feedback survey. The Straits Times reported that vouchers may be available for some activities during a promotional period; no universal offer or named partner was established.
GovTech’s FAQ cautions: “Of course, compatibility on paper doesn’t guarantee chemistry or a match leading to a relationship.” The algorithm can organize introductions around stated preferences; that is not proof it can predict romantic chemistry or lasting compatibility. Psychology lecturer Jean Liu of the Singapore Institute of Technology told The Straits Times, “We’re not very good at predicting that spark from a person’s characteristics.” GovTech FirstDate FAQ GovTech FirstDate design and privacy details The Straits Times expert and precedent coverage
What does FirstDate say about privacy?
According to the service’s own privacy description, profiles are visible only to the assigned match. It says questionnaire responses and other data are handled under government data-security standards, are not monetised or shared with third parties except where required or permitted by law, and can be removed when a user deactivates an account and requests removal. These are GovTech’s stated assurances, not independent audit findings. GovTech FirstDate privacy details

Is FirstDate open to the public, and how many people are using it?
No public launch or expansion had been decided as of GovTech’s response on 1 October 2026. GovTech also did not disclose participation figures, saying the pilot had only started on 29 September. There is consequently no reported basis yet for judging uptake or outcomes. CNA, 1 October 2026, updated 2 October
FirstDate is not the first state-supported effort to help singles meet in Singapore. The Straits Times reports that the Social Development Unit began in 1984 to encourage graduate singles to meet, and later moved away from direct matchmaking as dating apps grew. The NUS-originated Aphrodite Project offers another example of questionnaire-and-algorithm matchmaking, but it is a separate initiative; its reported outcomes cannot be used to predict FirstDate’s results. How does the pilot relate to Singapore’s demographic challenge?
Singapore’s total fertility rate fell to 0.87 in 2025, a new low, from 0.97 in 2024, according to the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD). In April 2026, the government announced a cross-ministry Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup. Its remit includes financial costs, work-life support, caregiving, housing, healthcare, preschool, education, workplace practices and community support—not dating alone. NPTD, 29 April 2026
Older survey findings provide context, not evidence about FirstDate users. In the 2021 Marriage and Parenthood Survey, 80% of young singles said they intended to marry; NPTD’s 2022 reply compared this with 83% in 2016 and 86% in 2012. Among those who did not intend to marry, cited reasons included valuing individual freedom and comfort, focusing on study or career, and not believing marriage would improve their lives. NPTD also described limited social circles, few chances to meet potential partners and leaving dating to chance among reasons many singles were not proactive about dating. These findings do not show that FirstDate changes intentions or fertility. NPTD, 7 November 2022

FirstDate tests whether curated introductions can help a defined group of public officers meet potential partners. Its design and the national demographic context make that question timely, but neither the pilot’s effectiveness nor any effect on marriage or births has been established.
