Sindoor, maang tikka and bindi are not three names for the same thing. Sindoor is red powder used along the hair parting in some Hindu customs; a bindi is a mark or ornament worn on the forehead. The available sources do not establish a reliable definition of maang tikka, so its form and meaning should not be guessed. Practices and meanings vary by community and context.

What sindoor is and how it is worn
Sindoor, sometimes written as sindur, is described in an educational account as red powder placed along the hair parting. That account connects it with some wedding and married-life customs. This describes a tradition, not a requirement followed by every Hindu woman or every community. (Arsha Vidya Center)

What a bindi is, and what it can mean
A bindi is worn on the forehead and can be a pigment mark, a stick-on design, or a jewelry ornament. The Government of India’s National Portal describes Ballia bindi (tikuli) as a handicraft made in varied designs, colors, and shapes. (National Portal of India)

The Pitt Rivers Museum describes religious and marital associations as well as decorative use, and notes that married and unmarried women may wear bindis as decoration. Its account distinguishes a bindi from a tilak: it describes tilak as a sacred Hindu forehead mark used by women and men, rather than treating the two terms as interchangeable. Pew Research Center’s 2021 survey of women in India found reported bindi use across religious groups: 84% of Hindu women and 78% of Buddhist women said they wore one, as did 18% of Muslim women, 22% of Christian women, and 29% of Sikh women. These are survey findings for India, not a rule about any individual’s religion or marital status. Pew also reported regional variation, including lower use among Hindu women in the Northeast than nationally. (Pew Research Center, 2021)
What can be said about maang tikka
The sources cited here do not provide a sufficiently reliable account to define maang tikka, specify where it is worn, or explain its symbolism. It would therefore be misleading to give a precise comparison with sindoor or bindi, or to attach a religious or marital meaning to it. A source-supported explanation requires further evidence.

What historical depictions do—and do not—show
The National Museum, New Delhi, records a Kangra/Pahari painting dated circa 1800 that depicts a mother applying a bindi to her forehead while a child holds a mirror. This is evidence of the practice represented in that specific artwork; the painting alone cannot establish how widely bindis were worn or what they meant across communities.
