Simulcasting: How to Multistream to YouTube and Other Platforms

Simulcasting sends one live program to multiple platforms. Compare encoder and relay setups, prepare destination accounts, check upload capacity, and understand Twitch’s conditions.

Simulcasting—also called multistreaming—sends the same live program to YouTube and one or more other platforms at the same time. You can send separate outputs from your encoder to each destination, or send one output to a relay service that forwards it. Choose based on your upload capacity, setup, destination count, cost, and how you will monitor each platform.

Choose how to send your stream

Route How it works What to consider
Encoder to each destination Your streaming encoder sends an output to every platform you configure. YouTube’s guide covers choosing an encoding method and configuring an encoder for a live event. Check whether your encoder supports the destinations you need and whether your internet connection can handle the outputs. Setup and monitoring are managed across the configured destinations.
Encoder to a relay Your encoder sends one incoming stream to a relay service, which forwards it to the platforms. Destinations may be configured with a service integration or with a platform’s server URL and stream key. Cloudflare documents forwarding live streams; Restream describes an OBS workflow for Twitch and YouTube. Check the service’s supported destinations, setup requirements, and current cost. The relay workflow can reduce the need to configure multiple outputs in an encoder, but it adds a service to your broadcast path.

Neither route is best for every creator. Compare ease of setup, available upload capacity, local encoding and hardware load, number of destinations, service cost, and the way you will check that each platform is receiving correctly.

Get YouTube and other destination accounts ready

  1. Verify your YouTube channel and enable live streaming. If this is your channel’s first live stream, request access early: YouTube says activation can take at least 24 hours after the first request. See YouTube’s guide to streaming across platforms.
  2. Check every other account. Make sure it is active, in good standing, and enabled to stream. YouTube advises checking each destination’s own help documentation for its requirements.
  3. Gather connection details. Depending on the encoder or relay, you may need a platform integration or its RTMP server URL and stream key. Treat each stream key as a credential: it authorizes a stream, so keep it private and do not include it in screenshots, public chat, or other exposed material.
  4. Choose your route and configure destinations. Add each platform through your encoder or relay’s supported connection method. Confirm that the selected destinations match the accounts you intend to use.
  5. Check your upload capacity. YouTube says sufficient internet upload speed is critical for high-quality simulstreaming. There is no single Mbps figure that applies to every setup; the needed capacity depends on your stream configuration and delivery route. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to connect the computer to the network, not a way to increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet service.
  6. Test the complete path before an important broadcast. Check that each destination receives the stream and that its picture and sound are usable. One successful encoder connection does not prove every destination is receiving correctly.

If Twitch is one of your destinations

Twitch permits simulcasting subject to conditions in its Terms of Service and Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ. Read the current wording before you go live, since platform rules can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Maintain the Twitch viewer experience. Twitch says the experience on Twitch must be at least as good as on the other platforms. Its FAQ gives making Twitch video quality worse than the other service as an example of a degraded experience.
  • Do not direct Twitch viewers to the concurrent stream. The FAQ says profile links to other social accounts, including streaming platforms, can appear in channel information, but creators may not actively promote or direct viewers to the concurrent livestream from Twitch through banners, titles, go-live notices, chat commands, or similar means.
  • Keep cross-platform activity off the Twitch simulcast. Twitch’s terms prohibit using third-party tools to combine cross-platform activity on the Twitch stream, such as merged chat. The FAQ says personal-use tools that combine activity are allowed when the combined activity is not displayed on the Twitch simulcast.

Apply Twitch’s current guidance to the exact tools and on-screen elements in your setup rather than assuming that a feature permitted off-stream is permitted on the Twitch broadcast.

Monitor each destination while live

Once the broadcast starts, check the status and audio and video quality on every platform. If one destination fails while others continue, troubleshoot that destination’s connection and credentials rather than assuming the entire broadcast is down. Keep access to the relevant encoder or relay controls so you can see which outputs are connected.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded videos—not a live camera broadcast—StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not replace the live multi-platform workflow above.

Costs and practical trade-offs

With direct encoder outputs, check whether your chosen software and computer can support the number of destinations you plan to use. With a relay, check the service’s current plan and destination support before relying on it. The cited Restream page documents a Twitch-and-YouTube workflow; it does not establish comparative performance or current pricing. For either route, a wired connection is optional and cannot compensate for insufficient internet upload capacity.
