Simulations Explain Why Silver Tarnishes Faster with Sulfur Than Oxygen

Molecular-dynamics simulations suggest sulfur breaks apart readily near silver, while oxygen faces a higher barrier—an atomic-scale explanation for tarnish.

Silver tarnishes readily in sulfur-containing environments because sulfur can react with the metal more quickly than oxygen, according to molecular-dynamics simulations published in 2019. The modeled reactions suggest that sulfur molecules break apart readily near silver, while oxygen faces a higher barrier to doing so. The work offers an atomic-scale explanation; it does not establish a proven way to prevent tarnish.

Why compare sulfur and oxygen?

Silver tarnish is commonly associated with sulfur-containing compounds, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Yet silver oxide is also thermodynamically possible, raising a question: why does sulfur produce tarnish more readily than oxygen?

The simulations reported by Chemistry World compared how sulfur and oxygen interact with silver. The specific molecular comparison was between S8 and O2; it should not be confused with the article’s background discussion of H2S as a familiar source of tarnishing.

What the simulations suggest happens at the surface

Sulfur breaks apart readily

In the model, S8 molecules approaching silver rapidly dissociated into individual sulfur atoms. Those atoms could then react with silver to form silver sulfide.

Oxygen faces a higher reaction barrier

O2 dissociated more slowly in the simulations. The report describes oxygen as having less sticking power at the silver surface because its dissociation faces a higher kinetic barrier. That difference helps explain why sulfur sulfide formation proceeds faster in the modeled comparison, despite the possibility of silver oxide formation.

Silver can move through the sulfide layer

After an initial tarnish layer forms, movement through that layer might be expected to slow further reaction. Instead, the simulations suggested that silver atoms move upward through the sulfide toward sulfur at the surface. This proposed transport mechanism could help silver sulfide continue growing quickly.

Researcher Gabriele Saleh called the movement of silver ions toward the surface surprising, describing them as being “sucked up” by sulfur. The finding is a mechanism observed in simulations, not a direct measurement of atoms moving in a tarnishing household object.

How the team studied the reaction

Gabriele Saleh and Stefano Sanvito of Trinity College Dublin, working with Nokia Bell Labs, used molecular-dynamics simulations with ReaxFF, a reactive force-field method. ReaxFF is intended to reproduce quantum-chemical behavior more efficiently than modeling full reactions at the quantum-mechanical level.

What the finding could—and could not—mean in practice

The researchers and conservator Rita Wiesinger discussed potential relevance to protecting silver artefacts and jewellery, as well as designing silver-based printed circuit board finishes for corrosive environments. Understanding how tarnish forms may help guide future protective approaches, but the study does not demonstrate that a particular coating, alloy, cleaning product, or conservation treatment works.

Its contribution is an atomic-scale explanation for the sulfur–oxygen difference in the modeled reactions. It is not a consumer prevention guide, and the simulation results alone do not establish how a specific silver object will behave under every real-world exposure.
