Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Two Arduino-based LoRa radios can communicate directly over roughly 8 km when the regional radio band, radio settings and antennas match, and the antennas have enough height and a largely clear path. That distance is a design target—not a guaranteed range: terrain, buildings and Fresnel-zone obstructions can weaken a link even when the endpoints appear to have line of sight.
Choose direct LoRa for two Arduino devices
For a link between two endpoints, you do not need LoRaWAN. LoRa is the radio modulation used for the physical link; LoRaWAN is a networking protocol that typically involves gateways and network infrastructure. The arduino-LoRa library can send packets directly between radios configured with matching settings. Its FAQ says data is sent unencrypted, so add encryption at the application layer if the messages need confidentiality.

Choose the hardware path
| Build | What you need | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Two Arduino MKR WAN 1310 boards | Two complete boards and compatible antennas for the regional band | The simplest documented Arduino route; boards integrate the LoRa radio. |
| Two Arduino-compatible controllers with SX1276/SX1278-family modules | Two controllers, matching regional-band radio modules, antennas and the arduino-LoRa library | More modular and potentially lower cost, but requires more wiring and configuration. |
Arduino describes LoRa as a physical-layer radio modulation technique designed for long-range, low-power communication. Its Help Center gives broad range guidance of up to 4.8 km in urban areas and up to 16 km or more in rural areas with line of sight. Those figures are general guidance, not a result for a particular Arduino module or a promise that a build will reach 8 km.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match the radio, antenna and local frequency plan
- Choose the regional band first. Arduino documentation covers 868 MHz and 915 MHz antenna options, but permitted bands and operating limits vary by location. Select a module intended for your country and check applicable frequency, transmit-power and duty-cycle rules.
- Use an antenna for that band. A 433 MHz radio should not be paired with an 868 MHz or 915 MHz antenna. Match the antenna connector to the radio board; Arduino documents micro-UFL/IPEX connector options. Prefer an antenna with VSWR as close to 1 as practical.
- Install the antenna correctly. Seat connectors fully, keep coax short, and mount both antennas vertically where possible. Height and a clear path matter more than simply selecting a module advertised as long-range.
Configure both radios the same way
Install the library or the board’s documented LoRa software stack, then ensure the transmitting and receiving radios use identical radio parameters. For a direct link with arduino-LoRa, match frequency, bandwidth, spreading factor, coding rate, sync word and CRC settings. A mismatch can prevent packets from being received even when the radios are close together.

- LoRa proprietary mode
- NUVOTON MCU & Semtech LoRa Engine
- Excellent blocking immunity
- Smart receiving power saving mode
- High sensitivity
- Choose the correct board or controller and install its LoRa library or documented stack.
- Set the same legal regional frequency on both endpoints.
- Set matching bandwidth, spreading factor, coding rate, sync word and CRC options.
- Send a short test message and confirm the receiver reports packets before moving the endpoints farther apart.
- If confidentiality matters, encrypt the payload in your application before passing it to the radio library.
Plan and test for an 8 km path
At long distances, visual line of sight alone may not be enough. Obstacles intruding into the Fresnel zone—the space around the direct radio path—can reduce signal strength. Elevate the antennas and avoid placing them behind buildings, hills, dense vegetation or other obstructions. Arduino’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends moving an antenna to a window to reduce signal blockage.
Begin with low-rate telemetry and log received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as you increase distance. A field test on the actual route is necessary to determine whether the link has adequate margin; no cited test establishes a guaranteed 8 km result for a particular unbranded SX1276/SX1278 module.

What determines whether the link succeeds?
- Path and antenna height: Clearer, elevated paths generally make a long link more achievable; obstructions can reduce range.
- Regional radio configuration: The radio frequency and permitted settings must suit the location and match at both ends.
- Antenna fit and quality: Band, connector and installation all matter; a mismatched antenna can undermine the radio.
- Data rate and power budget: These affect range, latency and operating duration. The best settings depend on the hardware and legal limits, so validate them in the field rather than assuming one configuration will work everywhere.
- Software behavior: Direct packet communication does not automatically provide addressing or encryption. Add the application features your project requires.
Arduino’s troubleshooting guidance describes 10 km as a typical maximum reliable LoRaWAN range and notes that gateway altitude, obstructions and antenna placement can reduce it. That LoRaWAN guidance is useful context about propagation, but it is not a measurement of this two-board point-to-point setup.
