Sim-to-Real Transfer: Where Physical Robots Show the Strongest Results

Legged locomotion has the strongest recent cross-platform transfer evidence, with a promising zero-shot navigation demonstration. Neither proves broad or long-term reliability.

Sim-to-real transfer currently has its strongest evidence in bounded robot-control tasks, particularly legged locomotion. Local mobile-robot navigation also has a promising zero-shot demonstration. Neither establishes that simulated policies are broadly reliable across changing hardware, environments, or long-term commercial operation.

What does “reliable” mean for sim-to-real transfer?

A policy that succeeds in simulation has not yet demonstrated real-world transfer. The evidence matters when a policy is physically tested, and its task, robot, sensors, adaptation process, baselines, and operating conditions are reported. Reliability is therefore specific to a robot and deployment scope—not a property that can be inferred from a high simulation score alone.

A policy can work reliably on a known robot and bounded task without generalizing to different hardware, unfamiliar surfaces, clutter, sensor changes, or sustained operation. There is no established cross-domain statistic for the share of sim-to-real policies that remain reliable in long-term commercial use.

Where is the strongest physical evidence today?

Task area Reported physical evidence What it supports Important limit
Legged locomotion A 2026 study reports testing its framework on three primary platforms and deploying it on ten additional robots. A notable example of systematic transfer across multiple legged-robot platforms. The result concerns a particular framework and locomotion task family; the deployment count is not a fleet-wide reliability rate.
Local mobile navigation A 2025 arXiv preprint reports zero-shot transfer from Isaac Sim training through Gazebo testing to physical ROS 2 robots, with benchmark performance comparable to Nav2. A real-robot transfer demonstration without real-world fine-tuning in the reported evaluation. It is a preprint, and the authors note that exteroception-based work is less standardized and reproducible than proprioception-based work.
Manipulation Surveys cover methods including domain randomization, domain adaptation, meta-learning, knowledge distillation, and policy-performance correlation. A substantial methods literature and ongoing progress. The available evidence here does not establish a common reliability ranking against locomotion or navigation.

Why is legged locomotion the clearest case?

Bjelonic, Tischhauser, and Hutter’s 2026 study describes a systematic framework that identifies dynamic parameters from actuators through whole-robot trajectories and on-ground locomotion. The authors report transfer without randomizing dynamic parameters. That makes the work a useful example of a model-and-identification-led approach rather than evidence that one training trick works across robotics generally.

The authors also report a “32% reduction in the full Cost of Transport of ANYmal (1.27).” This is a study-specific outcome, not a field-wide transfer rate or an independently established general effect. Read alongside the platform counts, it shows both why the work is notable and why its scope should remain attached to the claim.

What does the navigation result establish—and what does it not?

The 2025 preprint evaluates policies trained in NVIDIA Isaac Sim, tested through Gazebo, and deployed on real ROS 2 robots. Its reported zero-shot transfer and performance comparable to Nav2 are meaningful for the evaluated navigation benchmark. “Zero-shot” here means the reported transfer occurred without real-world policy fine-tuning; it does not mean the policy was proven across all robots or operating conditions.

The authors’ reproducibility caveat is relevant because navigation often depends on exteroceptive inputs such as cameras or other environmental sensing. Results involving those inputs are less standardized and reproducible than proprioception-based work, so comparisons between studies may not be like-for-like.

Why does transfer depend on more than simulator realism?

Closing the reality gap involves the full deployment pipeline. Physical modeling, hardware and actuator identification, training variation, sensor interfaces, policy inputs, and the software stack used on the real robot all matter. The 2026 Annual Review, The Reality Gap in Robotics: Challenges, Solutions, and Best Practices, emphasizes that software-stack alignment between simulation and deployment matters alongside physical modeling.

Domain randomization, adaptation, and related techniques can help address mismatches, but no single method guarantees transfer. A policy can fail even when a simulator looks visually convincing if actuator response, observations, timing, or deployment software differ in consequential ways. The broader survey of real-world deep reinforcement learning also highlights the need for stable, sample-efficient methods and principled development and evaluation; it notes that reinforcement learning has not seen widespread industrial deployment.

How should you judge a sim-to-real claim?

Use these questions to distinguish a physical transfer result from a simulation-only success or an overly broad reliability claim:

  • Was the policy tested on a physical robot? Separate simulated scores from hardware results.
  • What transferred? Check whether the result is zero-shot, uses system identification, or includes real-world fine-tuning or other adaptation.
  • How closely did the test match the intended use? Look for the robot and actuator match, task conditions, sensor type, surfaces or surroundings, and operating duration.
  • How broad was the evaluation? Note the number and diversity of platforms and environments, rather than treating a single successful demonstration as generality.
  • What was the comparison? Look for a physical baseline and the reported metric, not just a simulation score.
  • Can the result be reproduced? Sensor modality and differences in software stacks can make apparently similar evaluations hard to compare.

What can we conclude across robotics?

Current evidence supports a qualified verdict: legged locomotion has an unusually systematic recent multi-platform transfer report, while local mobile navigation has a promising zero-shot physical demonstration. Manipulation has a broad methods literature, but the evidence here does not justify ranking it as more or less reliable than those areas under a shared benchmark.

Elie Aljalbout and coauthors’ 2026 Annual Review captures the remaining challenge: “Closing this gap remains one of the most pressing challenges in robotics.” The cited results show that sim-to-real transfer can work under defined conditions; they do not establish a general reliability rate or settle long-term commercial performance.
