The number commonly called a “SIM card number” is usually the ICCID—the serial identifier for a SIM card or eSIM profile. It is not your phone number or your device’s IMEI. On an iPhone or iPad, check Settings > General > About and look for ICCID. Android menus vary, so check your SIM settings, carrier account, or carrier support if the number is not shown.
What is the number on a SIM card?
In a carrier setup or SIM lookup, “SIM number” usually means the ICCID, or SIM serial number. It identifies a particular SIM card or eSIM profile. ITU-T Recommendation E.118 (09/2025) describes the identifier as a number used to identify a UICC or a profile in an embedded UICC (eUICC).

The ICCID is different from the mobile phone number people dial or message. It is also different from the IMEI, which identifies the phone. There is no single digit count established here that should be treated as universal across SIMs and issuers.
ICCID, IMEI, EID, and phone number: what is the difference?
| Identifier | What it identifies | When it may be requested |
|---|---|---|
| ICCID | A SIM card or eSIM profile | When a carrier asks for the SIM serial number or profile identifier |
| IMEI | The phone or cellular device | When a carrier asks for the device identifier during setup |
| EID | The embedded SIM hardware | For some eSIM setup or support processes |
| Mobile phone number | The number people use to call or message you | When someone needs to reach you |
Google distinguishes the IMEI and EID from the SIM identifier: its Pixel guidance says a phone needs an IMEI to use a mobile network, and an eSIM-capable Pixel needs an EID. A phone with both a physical SIM and eSIM may show multiple entries or identifiers. Give the carrier the specific identifier it requested; if it only says “SIM number,” ask whether it means the ICCID.

How to find the ICCID on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to the ICCID field. Apple notes that the fields displayed depend on the device and its configuration.
- If you need to provide the number, touch and hold the identifier to copy it.
Apple documents this route in its device identifier lookup instructions. If ICCID is not listed, check your carrier account or contact the carrier; the field may not appear for every model or SIM configuration. Apple also lists Finder, Apple Devices, iTunes, and original packaging as places to find certain device identifiers, but packaging may not show every ICCID.
How to find the ICCID on Android
Android does not have one confirmed ICCID menu path that applies to every manufacturer, software version, and carrier. Look in your phone’s Settings under About phone or SIM-related settings for a field explicitly labelled ICCID or SIM serial number. The exact labels and availability vary.

Google’s Pixel instructions document Settings > About phone for the IMEI and Settings > About phone > SIM status for the EID; those paths are not universal ICCID instructions. See Google’s Pixel identifier guidance. If you do not see an ICCID, use the carrier’s app or account, or ask carrier support where to find the SIM or eSIM profile number.

If you have a removable SIM, check the card itself and the carrier materials or packaging it came with; the serial identifier may be printed there. If you need to remove the card, use the ejector tool and follow instructions for your specific phone model. Google’s Pixel SIM and eSIM instructions explain how to insert the tool into the tray opening and gently push until the tray pops out. Tray locations and SIM support differ by model and market.

What to do if you cannot find the number
- Your phone shows no ICCID: Check SIM-related settings, the physical SIM or its packaging, and your carrier account or app. If it remains hidden, ask the carrier to identify the SIM using your account details.
- You use an eSIM: There is no physical card to check. The eSIM profile has an ICCID, while the embedded SIM hardware has an EID. Ask your carrier where it displays the profile ICCID if your phone does not show it.
- You see several long identifiers: Match the label to the carrier’s request. ICCID means SIM or profile; IMEI means device; EID means embedded SIM hardware. If the request is unclear, confirm with the carrier before sharing a number.
- You are considering using the IMEI instead: Use it only if the carrier or service specifically asks for or accepts the IMEI. It is not interchangeable with the ICCID.
