The result is a major control milestone, but it is not a three-qubit entangling gate, a complete algorithm, or a logical-qubit error rate.
What the 99.99% result actually demonstrates
Wu and colleagues operated a five-qubit silicon spin array and applied primitive single-qubit X and Y rotations, including π/2 pulses. When each qubit was tested individually, every qubit exceeded 99.99% fidelity, with some gates approaching 99.999%. The same above-99.99% level was retained when up to three qubits were driven at the same time.

“Operating three at once” means parallel single-qubit control: three independent rotations happen during the same control interval. It does not mean the researchers performed a three-qubit entangling operation or ran a complete three-qubit algorithm. The reported numbers come from randomized benchmarking of physical primitive gates.

Why parallel microwave control is difficult
Driving one qubit can change the effective resonance conditions of its neighbors. In the array, the researchers identified microwave-drive-induced AC-Stark shifts as the dominant source of fidelity degradation during parallel operation. These shifts alter the phase accumulated by a qubit while another drive is active, producing errors even when the target qubits are otherwise well isolated.
The team addressed the problem with two linked techniques:
- Kaiser-window control pulses: shaped microwave pulses reduce unwanted spectral components and help limit excitation outside the intended transition.
- Pairwise phase calibration: the experiment calibrates the phase effects between pairs of simultaneously driven qubits rather than characterizing every possible multiqubit combination.
Pairwise calibration matters for scaling. A full calibration of every combination would grow rapidly as more qubits are added. Correcting the dominant pairwise phase shifts offers a lower-overhead route, although it does not prove that all higher-order interactions will remain negligible in a much larger processor.

How to interpret the fidelity number
Randomized benchmarking estimates the average performance of a defined gate set while reducing the influence of state-preparation and measurement errors. Here, the benchmark concerns physical X/Y single-qubit operations. A 99.99% fidelity corresponds to an average error probability on the order of one in ten thousand for the benchmarked primitive operation, under the experiment’s conditions.
That figure should not be read as a 99.99% chance that an arbitrary quantum program will produce the correct answer. Long circuits apply many gates, and errors accumulate. Two-qubit gates are generally more demanding than isolated single-qubit rotations; leakage into unwanted states, measurement errors, drift and calibration overhead also affect a computation. A logical qubit protected by error correction has a different fidelity metric again.
What changes when all five qubits run in parallel
When the researchers drove all five qubits at once, fidelity fell to approximately 99.9%. That remains a strong physical-control result and is close to a commonly cited practical fault-tolerance target for an individual operation, but it is materially below the above-99.99% result for one, two or three simultaneous qubits.

The gap is an important scaling signal. Crosstalk does not simply increase in a perfectly linear way with the number of active qubits, and a calibration that works for a few pairs may need additional compensation as the array becomes denser. The five-qubit result shows that parallelism is already useful, while also showing why larger arrays require continued work on pulse design, calibration automation and error sources that are not removed by pairwise phase correction.

Silicon research groups have been improving several different benchmarks. The results below are not interchangeable: they measure different operations, devices and levels of the control stack.
| Demonstration | Operation or device | Reported result | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wu et al., 2026 | Five-qubit silicon spin array | Above 99.99% for individual primitive single-qubit gates; some approach 99.999% | Single-qubit randomized-benchmarking fidelity with one qubit active |
| Wu et al., 2026 | Same array, shared microwave line | Above 99.99% while up to three qubits operate simultaneously | Parallel primitive single-qubit control, not a three-qubit entangling gate |
| Wu et al., 2026 | All five qubits operated in parallel | Approximately 99.9% | Physical single-qubit control under maximum parallel activity in the reported array |
| Thorvaldson et al., 2025 | Four-qubit phosphorus-in-silicon processor | 99.94%, 99.98%, 99.95% and 99.95% for the four individual qubits | Single-qubit gate fidelities |
| Thorvaldson et al., 2025 | Three nuclear-spin pairs in the same processor | 99.65%, 99.49% and 99.32% | Two-qubit controlled-Z gate fidelities |
| Thorvaldson et al., 2025 | Three-qubit state preparation | 96.2% | GHZ-state fidelity, an algorithm-level multi-qubit state metric |
| Thorvaldson et al., 2025 | Three-qubit search circuit | 94.57% ± 2.63% average success probability | Average Grover-search outcome, including the full circuit’s accumulated errors |
| Curry et al., 2025 | Four foundry-fabricated two-qubit devices | Control fidelities above 99%; state-preparation-and-measurement (SPAM) fidelity up to 99.9% | Control and readout-related performance in 300-mm-compatible fabrication |
The comparison explains why a 99.99% single-qubit result is important without making it a complete scorecard for a quantum computer. Single-qubit randomized benchmarking, two-qubit controlled-Z fidelity, GHZ-state fidelity and Grover-search success answer different questions.

Is 99.99% enough for a useful quantum computer?
It is high enough to make single-qubit control a less dominant error source in many architectures, especially when several gates can run concurrently. It does not, by itself, establish fault-tolerant quantum computing. A useful processor also needs high-fidelity entangling gates, reliable measurement and reset, low leakage, stable calibration, and enough physical qubits to encode logical qubits with error correction.
The earlier phosphorus-in-silicon results illustrate the distinction. They combined single-qubit fidelities near 99.95% with controlled-Z fidelities between 99.32% and 99.65%, yet the measured three-qubit GHZ fidelity was 96.2% and average Grover-search success was 94.57% ± 2.63%. Circuit depth and multi-qubit interactions expose errors that a primitive single-qubit benchmark does not.
What is a silicon spin qubit?
A silicon spin qubit stores quantum information in the spin state of a confined electron or donor-associated spin in a silicon device. Microwave fields resonantly rotate that spin, providing the X and Y operations measured in this experiment. Silicon is attractive for quantum processors because it is compatible with mature semiconductor fabrication methods and can support dense arrays, but the control electronics must operate in a cryogenic environment and suppress interactions between neighboring devices.

Does this mean quantum error correction is solved?
No. The result improves one prerequisite for error correction: accurate, parallel physical operations. It does not report a logical qubit, repeated error-correction cycles, a below-threshold logical error rate or a fault-tolerant algorithm. The approximately 99.9% fidelity observed when all five qubits are active also shows that scaling the control system remains an open engineering problem.
Are these qubits commercially available?
The reported devices are laboratory research hardware, not a commercial quantum computer announcement. Foundry-compatible progress is visible: 300-mm-fabricated two-qubit devices have demonstrated control fidelities above 99% across four devices, with SPAM performance reaching 99.9%. However, the reported work still identifies material imperfections, leakage and crosstalk as practical concerns. There is no evidence in these results that a consumer or generally available commercial system offers the same benchmark.
What the next tests need to show
- Maintain very high single-qubit fidelity as arrays grow beyond five qubits and more drives are active.
- Raise simultaneous two-qubit and multi-qubit gate performance, not only isolated single-qubit rotations.
- Demonstrate stable calibration over long runs rather than a single short benchmark window.
- Measure leakage, readout, reset and logical-qubit performance alongside randomized-benchmarking numbers.
- Show that foundry-fabricated devices can reproduce the precision of individually optimized academic devices.
The immediate significance of the Wu study is therefore practical: a shared microwave-control line can operate three silicon spin qubits in parallel while preserving gate fidelities above 99.99%. The result moves a key scaling bottleneck, but the path from precise physical rotations to a fault-tolerant processor still depends on entangling gates, materials, readout and reliable operation across much larger arrays.
