If enemy pressure is slowing you down, choose Story combat difficulty; if written clues are the problem, choose Hinted puzzle difficulty. These are reported as separate settings, so you can adjust combat and clue support independently rather than lowering every challenge at once. The mode names and effects below come from a September 2026 TechRadar review; the US PlayStation Store confirms an easier alternative preset but does not describe these named modes.
What difficulty should you play Silent Hill: Townfall on?
Pick the setting that matches what is stopping you. TechRadar review writer Lewis Maddison reports three combat modes and two puzzle modes. For a more manageable run, Story is the clearest choice when enemies or stealth encounters are the obstacle; Hinted is the targeted choice when you need help spotting written clues. The review describes these as separate choices, so puzzle hints need not mean reducing enemy pressure.

This is a practical recommendation based on the review’s descriptions, not a guarantee that every encounter will become easy. TechRadar says Maddison completed a playthrough on Normal and toggled puzzle difficulty between Normal and Hinted; that is the reviewer’s disclosed experience, not firsthand testing for this article. Read the TechRadar review.
What do the combat difficulty settings change?
| Combat setting | Reported effect | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Reduces the threat posed by enemies, according to TechRadar. | When combat or evasion is making progress difficult. |
| Normal | Described by TechRadar as the intended baseline for play. | When you want the review’s stated baseline challenge. |
| Nightmare | Enemies are more powerful, and the flashlight becomes detectable to them, according to TechRadar. | When you want more demanding combat and stealth. |
The PlayStation Store listing confirms that an alternative preset reduces overall challenge, but it does not name the modes or explain their individual effects. The descriptions in the table are the review’s reporting, not details supplied by the Store. See the US PlayStation Store listing.
#1 Best Overall
- Experienced entirely in first person, explore, evade, and survive using a limited set of weapons and tools, including a pocket television used to tune into unstable signals. Evasion is tense; combat is frenetic, while narrative driven puzzles reveal a truth that refuses to stay submerged.
- SILENT HILL: Townfall is a full-length, self-contained psychological horror set against the cold, isolated backdrop of Scotland, 1996
What does Hinted puzzle difficulty do?
TechRadar reports that Hinted mode adds red highlights to salient text clues. It helps make relevant writing easier to notice; it is not described as an automatic solution to every puzzle. The review also reports a Normal puzzle setting, but does not specify additional differences for that mode.
If you are progressing through fights comfortably but missing clues, try Hinted while keeping your preferred combat setting. That keeps the adjustment focused on the puzzle problem rather than changing enemy pressure as well.

Can you change difficulty in Silent Hill: Townfall?
The sources confirm that Townfall has difficulty presets and separate puzzle difficulty choices, but they do not establish the exact menu path, whether every setting can be changed at any time, or whether a restart is required. Check the current in-game settings menu for your platform and version rather than relying on a specific sequence of menu labels.
Other settings that can make play more comfortable
The US PlayStation Store lists accessibility and comfort options beyond difficulty. They do not all reduce combat challenge, but can address visual, control, audio, or quick-time-event barriers. The listing’s exact wording and option availability may vary by platform or game version.

Townfall is a first-person psychological horror game set in Scotland in 1996, according to the PlayStation Store. Its description emphasizes exploration, evasion, and survival with limited weapons and tools, including the handheld CRTV. PlayStation Blog explains that encounters can involve running, distracting, hiding, or fighting, and that enemies can track the player after being alerted. That mix helps explain why reducing enemy threat can be useful if you want to focus more on exploration and story.

In a September 21, 2026 PlayStation Blog feature, contributor Phil Hornshaw notes that the first-person view gives players less surrounding visibility than a third-person perspective, making it important to watch for threats at the sides or behind. The feature describes using the CRTV to tune in to nearby enemy positions, sneaking behind objects, peeking around cover, and hiding. Motion control can also be enabled for aiming a firearm or throwing an object. These are gameplay approaches, not evidence that a particular setting will solve every awareness or aiming difficulty.
