Silent Hill Games in Order: Release Order and Story Timeline

A complete guide to Silent Hill release order and story chronology, including the connected Origins–Silent Hill–Silent Hill 3 arc, Silent Hill 2’s standalone story and remake, alternate continuity, regional dates and newer releases.

If you want the franchise as it originally unfolded, play the major releases in release order. If you want the most direct connected narrative, play Silent Hill: Origins, then Silent Hill, then Silent Hill 3. Silent Hill 2 is a self-contained James Sunderland story, and its 2024 remake retells that same story rather than adding a new chapter.

What “Silent Hill games in order” can mean

There are two useful answers. Release order shows how the series developed, including experiments, spin-offs and later reinterpretations. Story order groups games by their fictional continuity. Those orders do not match: the prequel Silent Hill: Origins was released years after the first game, while Silent Hill 2 sits largely apart from the original arc.

The list below focuses on substantial console and standalone releases. Silent Hill also had regional mobile games, an arcade title and an interactive novel, so no short list can represent every version released worldwide.

Silent Hill games in release order

Years are the safest way to show the sequence because launch dates differed by territory. A title can have one year in Japan, another in North America and another in Europe. The chronology below uses the commonly cited year range where regional launches straddled two years.

  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K
Order Game Release year What it is
1 Silent Hill 1999 The original Harry Mason story and the foundation of the series’ mythology.
2 Silent Hill 2 2001 A largely independent psychological-horror story starring James Sunderland.
3 Silent Hill 3 2003 A direct continuation of the first game’s plot.
4 Silent Hill 4: The Room 2004 A new protagonist and setting connected to the wider mythology.
5 Silent Hill: Origins 2007 A prequel to the original game.
6 Silent Hill: Homecoming 2008–2009 A later standalone entry; the year depends on region.
7 Silent Hill: Shattered Memories 2009–2010 An alternate-reality reimagining of the first game’s premise.
8 Silent Hill: Downpour 2012 A later entry with a new protagonist and story.
9 Silent Hill: Book of Memories 2012 A portable spin-off with a different structure from the main horror games.
10 Silent Hill: The Short Message 2024 A short standalone release set apart from the classic arc.
11 Silent Hill 2 remake 2024 A full remake of the 2001 game, not a sequel.
12 Silent Hill f 2025 A separate story with a 1960s Japanese setting.

Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. describes the newer game in its official product wording as “a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” That distinction matters: count the remake as a separate release when tracking the franchise, but do not treat it as an additional story chapter.

Regional dates and the two Silent Hill 2 releases

Day-level chronology depends on the territory you choose. Konami’s European information lists the original Silent Hill 2 release as November 21, 2001, while the remake page gives October 8, 2024. Those dates should not be presented as universal worldwide launch dates. For a general guide, the year-level order is more reliable.

Releases outside the main list

Earlier chronology records include Silent Hill: Play Novel, Silent Hill: The Arcade, Silent Hill: Mobile (Orphan) and Silent Hill: The Escape. They are genuine franchise releases, but their formats and regional availability make them poor anchors for a first playthrough. The main list therefore emphasizes the substantial console, portable and later standalone games most readers mean by “the Silent Hill games.”

Silent Hill story timeline

The fictional chronology is less tidy than the release list. Some games have explicit links, while others contain references whose interpretation is disputed. Use the categories below instead of forcing every title into one perfectly certain calendar.

Rank #3
Silent Hill 2 - Compatible for PS5 - UK PAL (EU Version)
  • UK PSN account may be required for any online features

The connected core: Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3

Silent Hill: Origins is a prequel to the original Silent Hill, and Silent Hill 3 directly continues the first game’s story. For the clearest three-game arc, this is the recommended story sequence:

  1. Silent Hill: Origins: establishes events and characters that lead into the first game.
  2. Silent Hill: follows Harry Mason’s search for his missing daughter and introduces the central mythology.
  3. Silent Hill 3: picks up the consequences of that story with a new playable protagonist.

A commonly used timeline places Origins at the zero point, the original game seven years later and Silent Hill 3 24 years after Origins. Treat those as relative intervals, not undisputed calendar years. The Japanese guide timelines and in-game evidence used to reconstruct the chronology do not agree consistently on exact years, so a precise year-by-year chart would imply more certainty than the sources support.

Rank #4
Silent Hill 2 Korean Edition [English Supports] for PS5
  • This is Korean Version released in Korea. Region free title so you can play it on your System.
  • Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean
  • Having received a letter from his deceased wife, James heads to where they shared so many memories, in the hope of seeing her one more time: SILENT HILL. There, by the lake, he finds a woman eerily similar to her... "My name...is Maria," the woman smiles. Her face, her voice... She's just like her. Experience a master class in psychological survival horror―lauded as the best in the series―on the latest hardware with chilling visuals and visceral sounds.

Silent Hill 2: an independent starting point

James Sunderland comes to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his deceased wife. The game’s characters, themes and plot are designed to stand on their own, so you do not need the first game to understand it. It shares the series’ setting and ideas rather than continuing Harry Mason’s narrative.

The 2024 remake tells the same James Sunderland story in rebuilt form. If you want to experience that story with modern presentation, play the remake by itself; if you are studying the series’ historical development, play the 2001 original in release order and the remake afterward.

Best Value

Silent Hill 4: The Room: connected mythology, uncertain position

The Room belongs to the original run but changes protagonist, structure and much of the setting. It includes material involving Walter Sullivan and references that relate to Silent Hill 2. Because some details conflict across chronology sources, place it after the first three games for a practical playthrough rather than assigning it a definitive in-world year.

Shattered Memories: alternate continuity

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories reimagines the premise of the first game in an alternate reality. It is not another chapter between Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3. Its different interpretation of characters and events is best experienced as its own version of the story.

Homecoming and Downpour: later entries with debated links

Both games arrived after the original four-game run and introduce new protagonists and conflicts. Some chronology projects include connections to the broader universe, while others omit them because the relationship to the classic arc is questionable. The evidence does not justify declaring either game universally non-canon, nor does it support placing either one at a precise point in the core timeline. Treat them as later, mostly self-contained stories after you have played the original arc.

The Short Message and Silent Hill f

The Short Message is a recent standalone experience and does not need to be inserted into the Origins-to-3 sequence. Silent Hill f released on September 25, 2025, and its 1960s Japanese setting distinguishes it from the older stories centered on the American town of Silent Hill. The available information confirms its release but does not establish a chronological bridge to the classic games, so play it as a separate setting.

Which order should you choose?

Your goal Recommended order Reason
See how the franchise evolved Release order from Silent Hill (1999) onward Shows the shift from the original arc to independent stories, experiments and modern releases.
Follow the most connected plot Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 These three have the clearest prequel-to-sequel relationship.
Start with one self-contained classic Silent Hill 2 or its 2024 remake James Sunderland’s story does not require knowledge of the other games.
Compare original and remake design 2001 Silent Hill 2 → 2024 remake Both cover the same central story, allowing direct comparison.
Try alternate interpretations Shattered Memories after the original, or on its own It is an alternate-reality reimagining, not a continuity bridge.
Play the newest settings first The Short Message → Silent Hill f These are recent standalone experiences and do not depend on the classic sequence.

A practical first-playthrough plan

  1. Decide whether story continuity matters. Choose the three-game core arc for connected plot, or release order for historical context.
  2. Choose original versus remake editions. The remake is a retelling of Silent Hill 2; it does not replace the original if you want to study the 2001 release.
  3. Check your platform before committing. Konami lists the Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and PC, while the original game is associated with older platforms. Availability, re-releases and regional storefront listings can change.
  4. Keep alternate-continuity games separate. Play Shattered Memories as a reimagining, not as an explanation of a missing episode in the main arc.
  5. Use year-level order when mixing regions. If you document exact launch days, state whether you mean the first regional release, a North American date, a European date or another territory.

Common ordering mistakes

  • Putting Origins first in release order: it is first in the connected story, but it was released in 2007.
  • Calling the remake Silent Hill 3: the 2024 release is a remake of Silent Hill 2, not a sequel.
  • Assuming every game shares one timeline: Shattered Memories is explicitly a reimagining, and the placement of later entries is not firmly established.
  • Using one country’s date as the global date: launch schedules varied by territory, especially for older releases.
  • Expecting every spin-off in a beginner list: mobile, arcade and interactive releases are part of the franchise history but are not necessary for understanding the main stories.

Bottom line for a new player

Choose Origins → Silent Hill → Silent Hill 3 when you want the strongest continuous narrative. Choose Silent Hill 2—original or 2024 remake—when you want a contained story with no prerequisites. Choose release order when your goal is to understand the series as a changing body of games, and keep Shattered Memories, Downpour, Homecoming, The Short Message and Silent Hill f in their own continuity or standalone context rather than forcing them into an exact classic timeline.
