Sick of Windows Bloat? Try These 3 Lightweight Linux Distros Instead

Linux Mint Xfce, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu are three lightweight Linux options to consider. Compare their official requirements and test hardware compatibility before switching.

If your Windows laptop feels weighed down, Linux Mint Xfce, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu are three lightweight Linux distributions worth trying. They use desktops designed with lower resource use in mind, but none is a guaranteed speed fix: browser tabs, hardware, drivers, storage health, and the applications you need all affect performance. There is no matched-hardware test here to rank the three by speed.

Which lightweight Linux distro should you try?

Start with the desktop and the published requirements that fit your laptop, then test whether your essential hardware and software work. Official descriptions establish the projects’ goals and minimums, not how fast one will run on a particular computer.

Distribution Desktop and project goal Published hardware information Lifecycle and trial information
Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena” Xfce is a lightweight desktop that uses fewer resources than Cinnamon, with fewer features, according to Linux Mint’s download page. Linux Mint’s general minimums are 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space; it recommends 4 GB RAM for comfortable use and 100 GB disk space. These are not separate Xfce requirements. Linux Mint says version 22.3, announced January 13, 2026, is supported until 2029. The sources cited here do not confirm a live-USB trial claim for Mint. Linux Mint’s 22.3 announcement
Xubuntu Xubuntu uses Xfce, which its documentation describes as configurable and light on resources. Xubuntu documentation Minimum: 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 1 GB memory, and 8.6 GB free disk space. For a smoother experience with multiple applications, it recommends a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB memory, and 20 GB disk space. Xubuntu download page The download page says you can try Xubuntu from USB or DVD before installing. No support end date is stated in the cited information.
Lubuntu Lubuntu’s manual describes it as a lightweight but functional Ubuntu-based distribution. It uses LXQt and offers a graphical interface and applications for browsing, email, chat, play, and productivity. Lubuntu manual A current release-specific minimum is not stated in the cited information. A support end date and a live-media trial claim are not stated in the cited information.

Linux Mint’s download page lists version 22.3 “Zena”; its announcement says, “Linux Mint 22.3 was a very good release.” That is the project team’s assessment, not an independent comparative review. Read the announcement.

Which is easiest for a Windows user?

“Easiest” depends on what you recognize and what you need to do. Linux Mint Xfce and Xubuntu both use Xfce, while Lubuntu uses LXQt. The official descriptions establish their desktop environments and goals, but do not prove that one will feel most familiar to every Windows user.

  • Consider Linux Mint Xfce if you want Mint’s Xfce edition and its published general system requirements fit your machine. Its lighter desktop trades some features against Cinnamon.
  • Consider Xubuntu if Xfce appeals to you and you want published minimum and recommended hardware figures, plus an explicitly documented USB or DVD trial.
  • Consider Lubuntu if LXQt and Lubuntu’s stated lightweight, functional Ubuntu-based approach appeal to you. Check its current release information for requirements and support details before choosing.

Try the interface and the applications you expect to use rather than choosing from a “fastest distro” ranking. No matched-hardware benchmark establishes a speed winner among these options.

Can you try Linux without installing it?

Xubuntu’s download page specifically says you can try the system from USB or DVD before installation. A bootable USB flash drive is one practical way to do that; the cited information does not specify a required capacity, speed, or brand. For Mint or Lubuntu, consult the current official installation instructions before assuming their trial process or steps are the same.

How much RAM does a lightweight Linux distro need?

The published figures are not identical, and they should not be treated as head-to-head performance measurements. Linux Mint publishes general minimums of 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk space, recommending 4 GB RAM and 100 GB disk space for comfortable use. Xubuntu publishes 1 GB memory and 8.6 GB free disk space as minimums, and recommends 2 GB memory, 20 GB disk space, and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor for smoother use with multiple applications. The cited Lubuntu manual does not provide a current release-specific minimum, so older figures or another Ubuntu flavor’s requirements should not be substituted.

Even if a machine meets a published minimum, actual usability depends on its processor generation, storage condition, drivers, browser workload, and applications. A large number of browser tabs or a failing hard drive can remain a bottleneck regardless of desktop choice.

What to check before replacing Windows

  • Back up personal files separately before changing the operating system.
  • Record the laptop model, processor, RAM, storage, and whether the machine boots in UEFI mode.
  • Check the current installation guide for the distribution you choose, and follow that project’s official instructions for verifying the downloaded image.
  • Make sure essential software has a workable Linux application or web alternative.
  • Where trial media is available, test important devices and workflows before committing to an installation.

“Windows bloat” can describe different problems, and the cause matters. Unwanted startup software, limited RAM, a failing hard drive, and an unsupported Windows version call for different remedies. Switching operating systems is an option to evaluate, not a promise that any particular laptop will become fast.
