Shure phono cartridges are discontinued legacy products, not a current production line: the company announced on May 1, 2018, that production would end effective summer 2018. Choosing one today means judging the exact cartridge and stylus pairing, the used part’s condition, and your setup—not relying on a present-day “best-sounding” ranking that the available specifications cannot establish.
Shure cartridges are legacy products
Shure’s company history records that it continued making phono cartridges into the 21st century and released the V15 Type III in 1973. On May 1, 2018, the company announced that it had decided to discontinue production of Shure Phono products effective summer 2018. Shure’s discontinuation statement establishes the end of production; it does not say that every cartridge or replacement stylus disappeared from resale channels at once.

That distinction matters when shopping. A model name or a matching product listing does not establish that a part is currently in stock, new, genuine, or in good condition. Shure’s official specifications are useful for identifying historical model differences, but they do not determine the condition of any individual used cartridge or replacement stylus.

Shure’s 1974 catalog distinguishes the M44 variants by stylus geometry, recommended tracking force, and intended record use. These are historical manufacturer specifications, not current measurements.

| Model | Stylus | Tracking force | Documented application or note |
|---|---|---|---|
| M44-7 | Spherical, .0007 in. | 1½–3 g | All 33⅓ and 45 rpm records |
| M44C | Spherical, .0007 in. | 3–5 g | Intended for heavier tracking |
| M44E | Elliptical, .0004 × .0007 in. | 1¾–4 g | Shure said the elliptical stylus minimizes tracing distortion, especially in inner grooves |
| N44-3 | Spherical, .0025 in. | 1½–3 g | For 78 rpm records |
The catalog also says N44-series styli may be interchanged among M44 Standard Series cartridges. Treat that as a historical Shure specification, not a reason to assume that any listing labeled “N44” fits every cartridge or is suitable for every record. Confirm the exact cartridge and stylus combination before buying.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Stylus shape and record type
The catalog documents spherical and elliptical styli for different M44 variants, and a larger spherical N44-3 for 78 rpm records. These distinctions help identify intended applications. They do not, by themselves, prove which model will sound best in a particular turntable, tonearm, or listener’s system.

Tracking force
The ranges in the table are the 1974 catalog’s recommendations for those models. They should not be treated as a universal setting for another cartridge, a replacement stylus from a different maker, or a worn or damaged assembly. Use the instructions for the exact cartridge and stylus you have, and make sure the tonearm setup is appropriate.
There is no supported current sound ranking
Shure’s historical specifications and company history do not provide a controlled, current listening comparison among these cartridges. They support comparisons of design and documented use, not a reliable present-day sonic winner.

Check stylus compatibility before purchasing
Shure’s product pages document specific replacement relationships: the N97xE replaces the needle for the M97xE, while the N44-7 replaces needles for the M44-7 and M44-7-H. Shure marks the N97xE discontinued, so a documented match is not proof of current Shure stock. See the N97xE product page and N44-7 product page for those model associations.
Before ordering a replacement, compare the full cartridge model number with the seller’s stated compatibility, including suffixes. Ask whether the item is a complete cartridge or a stylus alone, and request clear details about condition and provenance. A listing that uses a familiar Shure model name is not, on its own, proof of compatibility, authenticity, or remaining service life.

Where to look for discontinued styli
Shure’s support answer to “Where might I find discontinued styli (needles) for older Shure phono cartridges?” points readers to third-party sources when Shure no longer sells a replacement. Its U.S. suggestions include JICO Stylus, LP Gear, TurntableNeedles.com, and Styli Record Needle Store; its European suggestions include Mantra Audio and DaCapo Audio. This is sourcing guidance, not confirmation of current inventory, authenticity, or compatibility for every cartridge. Check availability and the exact model fit directly with the seller. Read Shure’s discontinued-stylus sourcing guidance.
When searching a marketplace, use “Shure cartridge replacement stylus” together with the exact cartridge model, then verify the seller’s stated fit against Shure’s documented model associations where available. Treat search results as candidates to investigate, not as evidence that Shure currently sells the item new.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the cartridge: Record its complete model marking, including any suffix.
- Match the stylus: Confirm compatibility for that exact cartridge rather than relying on a similar-looking model name.
- Confirm the intended record type: In particular, distinguish a 78 rpm stylus such as the catalog’s N44-3 from styli documented for 33⅓ and 45 rpm records.
- Ask about condition and provenance: Request the seller’s description of whether the part is new, used, or refurbished and what they can substantiate about its origin and condition.
- Check setup requirements: Use the appropriate tracking-force guidance for the actual cartridge and stylus combination; do not transfer a historical figure to a different replacement by assumption.
- Verify availability at purchase time: Shure’s third-party suggestions and discontinued product pages do not guarantee that a particular seller currently has a compatible part.
