His argument is that component costs are rising, household budgets are finite, and many players are content with current systems. This is Yoshida’s opinion—not a Sony or Nintendo announcement or a confirmed launch plan.
What did Shuhei Yoshida say?
Asked about Xbox’s messaging around its next-generation Project Helix and possible business models, Yoshida said Sony and Nintendo might delay new generations because of the cost of making consoles. He then put his view plainly: “And I think they should try to keep the current generation as long as possible, because I think people are very happy using PS5 and Switch 2.” The comment comes from his interview with The Verge, as reported by VGC.

Yoshida pointed to rising costs for components used in PCs and consoles and to consumers having limited budgets for technology. He also said that people with a PS5, Switch 2, or sufficiently capable PC may prefer to keep playing on what they already own. These are his observations, not independently measured findings about player demand.

No. Yoshida was offering an opinion about what Sony should do; he was not speaking for the company or announcing a PS6 schedule. The sources do not establish a PS6 release date or confirm that Sony has delayed a successor.

Sony has described PS5 as “a very successful platform among the current generation of game consoles” and characterized its current-generation sales performance and market-share expansion as satisfactory in its FY2024 Corporate Strategy Meeting Q&A. That company assessment provides context for Yoshida’s argument, but it does not confirm how long PS5 will remain the current generation. Sony also described its initial 25 million-unit target as an aggressive goal based on projections made during a COVID-era tailwind; that figure is a historical target, not current PS5 sales or installed base.
What has Nintendo said about the Switch 2 lifecycle?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s 2025 shareholder Q&A that Switch 2 had just launched, so it was too early to discuss its lifecycle. He added that Nintendo aims for as many consumers as possible to enjoy the system for as long as possible, as with the original Switch. This states an aim, not a promised lifecycle length or a specific plan for when a successor will arrive.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Furukawa also confirmed Switch 2 compatibility with Switch software. That continuity can help owners carry existing games forward, but it does not establish how long Nintendo will support the hardware. See the 2025 shareholder Q&A for the company’s wording.
Why does Yoshida think current hardware may be enough?
Component costs and household budgets
Yoshida’s view is that more expensive components can make new consoles harder to justify when consumers are already balancing limited budgets. That is his explanation for why companies might stretch a generation, not a quantified forecast of console prices or demand.

Perceived need for more power
Yoshida said he did not think many players or developers were asking for more powerful hardware. This describes his impression; it should not be read as a survey of players, a statement from developers as a group, or proof that no games would benefit from faster hardware.
Existing platforms and software continuity
For players, the practical question is whether the games they want run well on their current system. Yoshida’s argument is that people who are happy with a PS5, Switch 2, or capable PC may see little reason to replace it immediately. Nintendo’s confirmation of Switch software compatibility offers one concrete form of continuity for Switch 2 owners, although it says nothing about a future console’s launch timing.

Why did Yoshida compare Sony and Nintendo with Xbox?
VGC reports that Yoshida thought Xbox might have more reason to push ahead because of its competitive position and plans involving different hardware and access to its ecosystem. That is his interpretation of the companies’ situations. It is not confirmation of release dates for Project Helix, PS6, or a Nintendo successor.
