To add weather to your Mac menu bar, open Apple menu > System Settings > Menu Bar, then select Weather under Menu Bar Controls. Current conditions and temperature will appear in the menu bar. The city shown is the first location in the Weather app’s list.
Turn on the Weather menu bar item
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Menu Bar in the sidebar. Scroll down if you do not see it.
- Under Menu Bar Controls, select the box next to Weather.
- Click the Weather status in the menu bar to open the Weather app.
Apple’s built-in status item shows current conditions and temperature. For the setup steps, see Apple’s instructions for seeing weather status in the Mac menu bar.

Change which city appears
The menu bar uses the first location in the Weather app’s location list. Open Weather and drag the city you want to the top. If it is not in the list yet, add it in Weather first.

Choose a larger weather view
If the compact menu bar status is not enough, you can use a Weather widget instead. Click the date and time in the menu bar to open Notification Center, or add widgets to the desktop. This is separate from enabling the Weather menu bar item. Apple explains the options in its guide to adding and customizing widgets on Mac.

When to consider another app
Apple’s built-in status is a quick glance at conditions and temperature. If you want more forecast detail or configurable menu bar information, a third-party app such as Forecast Bar is an optional alternative. Check its current features and compatibility in the Mac App Store listing before installing.
