Stage Manager is great for keeping your workspace focused, but it can also change what you see on your Desktop—especially widgets. If you depend on at-a-glance information (calendar, weather, stocks, reminders), you’ll want predictable widget behavior when Stage Manager turns on.
This guide shows you exactly where to control desktop widgets while Stage Manager is active, plus what to do when the setting doesn’t appear or widgets ignore your changes.

What changes when Stage Manager is active
Stage Manager organizes your windows by keeping the current app front and reducing visual clutter. Depending on your macOS version and configuration, widgets on the Desktop may be shown or hidden while Stage Manager is running.

Check your macOS version (it affects where the toggle lives)
Start by confirming your macOS version:
- Click Apple menu → System Settings
- Go to General → About
- Note the macOS version number
Reason: Apple has moved and renamed settings over time. The widget control is easiest to find on macOS Sonoma, while Ventura may rely more heavily on the general Desktop Widgets setting.
Show or hide desktop widgets from System Settings
In most builds, you’ll control widget visibility in Stage Manager settings and verify that widgets are enabled for the Desktop.
macOS Sonoma: Desktop widgets with Stage Manager
On Sonoma, look for a Stage Manager option that explicitly controls desktop widgets visibility.

- Open System Settings
- Go to Desktop & Dock
- Find Stage Manager (or scroll to it under related settings)
- Open the Stage Manager settings page
- Look for a widget-related option such as Desktop widgets / Show desktop widgets / Hide desktop widgets
- Set it to your preference, then exit System Settings
If you don’t see the widget-specific toggle but you do see a general Stage Manager setting, use the verification steps in the next sections—Sonoma typically also honors the global Desktop Widgets configuration.

macOS Ventura: Desktop widgets with Stage Manager
On Ventura, Stage Manager may not include a dedicated “desktop widgets while active” toggle in some releases. In those cases, widget visibility is usually governed by the Desktop Widgets setting.
- Open System Settings
- Go to Desktop & Dock
- Find the Widgets area
- Enable or disable Show widgets on Desktop (wording can be close to this)
- Turn Stage Manager on/off as a test (use the Stage Manager button in the Control Center, or the Stage Manager option in System Settings)
If Ventura does include a Stage Manager-specific widget option on your exact version/build, it should appear in the Stage Manager settings page; otherwise, the Desktop Widgets toggle is the controlling factor.
Confirm widgets are allowed to appear on the Desktop
Even if Stage Manager is set correctly, widgets won’t show on the Desktop unless the general widget permission is enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Go to System Settings → Desktop & Dock
- Under Widgets, find Show widgets on Desktop
- Turn it On to display widgets, or Off to hide them
- Re-check after toggling Stage Manager
Reality check: Some widget types may also be affected by how macOS treats Desktop vs. interactive widgets (like when you’re in full-screen contexts). Still, the “Show widgets on Desktop” setting is the gatekeeper for most users.

Troubleshooting when widgets still won’t show or hide
If toggling the setting doesn’t change widget visibility immediately, don’t assume it “failed.” macOS sometimes caches layout/space state—especially across Spaces, display changes, or after waking from sleep.
Stage Manager control changes but widgets don’t
- Turn Stage Manager off, wait 5–10 seconds
- Turn Stage Manager back on
- Quit and reopen any app that recently changed focus (e.g., Calendar, Safari, Notes)
- If you use multiple displays, confirm the behavior on the specific display where widgets sit
Then, re-validate the global Desktop Widgets toggle in System Settings → Desktop & Dock. If one toggle is correct and the other isn’t, you’ll still see unexpected behavior.
The Stage Manager toggle is missing
If you can’t find a widget-related Stage Manager option, do these checks:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Update macOS to the latest available version in System Settings → General → Software Update
- Search Settings: use the Search field at the top and try terms like widgets, Desktop, and Stage Manager
If the setting truly doesn’t exist in your build, rely on Show widgets on Desktop and accept that Stage Manager won’t independently override it in that version.

Widgets appear only in certain spaces or fullscreen apps
macOS manages Desktop content and Spaces differently depending on your setup. Test the behavior like this:
- Enter Stage Manager mode
- Switch between Spaces (Ctrl + ← / →, or swipe on trackpad)
- Check widgets in the Space where your Desktop normally shows them
- Exit full-screen apps and re-check
If widgets hide/show only in one context, your best workaround is to adjust the global Show widgets on Desktop setting and avoid expecting Stage Manager to override Space-specific Desktop presentation.
Restart and reset the right things (not everything)
Try the smallest fix first.
- Log out/in (fastest way to clear stale UI state): Apple menu → Log Out…
- If that’s too heavy, restart only the affected app(s), then toggle Stage Manager again
- If the issue persists, restart the Mac
As a last resort, verify that system updates weren’t interrupted. Partial updates can cause UI settings to behave inconsistently.

- Changing the wrong toggle: Users often adjust the Stage Manager setting while the global Show widgets on Desktop option remains disabled (or vice versa).
- Assuming instant updates across Spaces: Some changes show only after switching Spaces or leaving/re-entering Stage Manager.
- Testing with full-screen apps: Widgets can be visually suppressed depending on how you’re viewing the desktop.
- Forgetting multiple displays: Widgets can appear on one display but not the other if you moved them or changed which display owns the Desktop layout.
FAQ
Will Stage Manager always hide desktop widgets?
No. On many configurations, desktop widgets visibility is controlled by a dedicated setting (if your macOS build includes it) and by the global Show widgets on Desktop permission. If either is set to show, widgets can remain visible even when Stage Manager is active.

Why don’t I see any option for desktop widgets in Stage Manager?
Some macOS versions/builds don’t expose a widget-specific Stage Manager toggle. In that case, you control widgets through Desktop & Dock → Widgets → Show widgets on Desktop.
Do widgets hide only when Stage Manager is turned on manually?
Usually it’s tied to Stage Manager being active, regardless of whether you turned it on via Control Center or by an app/workflow. If behavior differs, check for Space/full-screen context and verify the global widget setting.
Does moving widgets affect what I see with Stage Manager?
Yes. If you rearranged widgets or moved them between displays, the Desktop they belong to might behave differently across Spaces. Always test in the same Space/display where the widgets are normally placed.

Bottom Line
To show or hide desktop widgets when Stage Manager is active, you need the right combination of settings: the Stage Manager widget behavior (if your macOS version offers it) plus the global Show widgets on Desktop permission in System Settings → Desktop & Dock.
If the Stage Manager widget toggle doesn’t exist on your build, rely on the global Desktop Widgets setting and confirm behavior across Spaces and full-screen apps.
