Its documented workflow is to generate a preview bundle, then build that bundle into a site. The result can be opened locally; hosting it for wider access is optional.
What Phonebook does
Phonebook is an open-source CLI and MCP server for collecting native mobile previews into a browsable gallery. It uses previews already in an app repository as the source material, then produces a bundle of images and a manifest that can be turned into a static site. This gives designers, product managers, and QA a way to answer practical questions such as whether the loading, empty, dark-mode, or button states are represented without navigating the app’s source code.

The catalog is inferred from preview names rather than a separate story definition. For example, a preview named UserCard/Loading is intended to appear under a “User Card” component with a “Loading” state. Consistent, descriptive names therefore help make the resulting gallery easier to browse. Phonebook’s current v1 documentation describes a single-platform repository and output at a time; it is not a combined Android-and-iOS catalog.
How the generate-and-build workflow works
- Prepare native previews. Add or maintain the platform’s ordinary preview declarations in the app code. Phonebook gathers existing previews, so useful coverage depends on the previews the team has written.
- Generate a preview bundle. Run
phonebook generate. Phonebook invokes the platform-specific rendering path and writes a bundle containing a manifest and images. - Build the gallery. Run
phonebook buildto turn the bundle into a static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript site. - Open or distribute the output. The generated site can be opened locally with a
file://URL or placed on a static host. Generating the gallery does not require choosing a hosting service.
For the documented npm installation, the package is @stag-build/phonebook. Install it globally with npm install -g @stag-build/phonebook, or invoke it one time with npx. The project also documents Homebrew installation. Its MCP server can be started with npx @stag-build/phonebook mcp; coding-agent clients can use it for setup diagnosis, preview-coverage analysis, guidance on missing previews, and generation/build actions. Follow the repository’s current setup instructions for the relevant client and project configuration: Phonebook repository.

What Android and iOS need to render previews
Phonebook uses different rendering paths for the two platforms, and that difference affects where generation can run.
| Platform | Documented rendering path | Requirements and configuration |
|---|---|---|
| Android | Roborazzi and ComposablePreviewScanner, running through Robolectric on the JVM | JDK 17 or later; configure the Gradle module or modules and build variant. The documented path does not require an emulator. |
| iOS | SnapshotPreviews invoked through xcodebuild test against a named simulator |
macOS with Xcode and a booted or bootable simulator; configure the Xcode project or workspace, scheme, and simulator. CI therefore requires a macOS runner. |
Android’s @Preview declarations are a native way to preview composables in Android Studio; Phonebook uses a rendering pipeline to collect them into its gallery. See the Android documentation on Compose previews for the framework context. The platform requirements and Phonebook-specific setup are described in the project documentation.

Decide whether Phonebook fits your team
- Preview coverage: It is most useful when the repository already contains meaningful previews for the states the team wants to review. A gallery cannot show states that have not been captured in preview code.
- Rendering environment: Android teams can use the documented JVM route without an emulator. iOS teams need access to macOS, Xcode, and a simulator for the rendering step.
- Catalog maintenance: Because Phonebook derives groupings from names, a consistent naming convention avoids maintaining a second story catalog, but names must communicate component and state clearly.
- Publication scope: The current v1 docs describe one platform per repository and bundle. Teams needing one combined cross-platform view should not treat that as a current feature.
- Sharing needs: A local static site may be enough for an individual review. A team can separately publish the generated output to a static host if it needs a shared link.
What is not included in the documented v1
Phonebook is a generator for a static gallery, not a hosted SaaS service. Multi-bundle merging with side-by-side cross-platform views, version diffing, gallery search and filtering, and additional CI recipes are listed as roadmap work rather than available v1 capabilities. If those are essential, plan on another workflow or wait until the project documents them as implemented. Check the Phonebook README for current commands, dependencies, and feature status because these details can change.
