To show a Visio diagram in Confluence Cloud, export it from Visio as a PNG or JPEG, then upload the image while editing the Confluence page or live doc. Use a PDF for multi-page drawings or attach the original .vsdx when readers need to download the source. An attachment is not guaranteed to display inline, and a static export is not an editable Visio canvas.
Choose the right way to share the diagram
| What readers need | Use this | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| See one diagram in the page | Export PNG or JPEG and upload it | Inline display depends on file type and Confluence editor support. |
| Read a multi-page drawing | Export and upload a PDF | Visio for the web includes all pages according to the drawing’s page layout. |
| Download or preserve the Visio source | Attach the .vsdx file, optionally alongside an image or PDF |
Confluence does not guarantee inline rendering for every file type. |
| Show a live webpage | Use Confluence’s iFrame macro with the webpage URL | The destination must allow framing; the macro embeds a webpage, not a native Visio editing canvas. |
| Keep the diagram editable | Revise the source in Visio, then upload the updated export and source as needed | A static export does not update when the Visio drawing changes. |
Export the drawing from Visio
Visio desktop
Open the drawing and choose File > Export. Microsoft documents PDF and image outputs including PNG, JPG, and SVG. Choose an image for a straightforward inline visual or PDF when readers need the drawing as a document.

Visio for the web
Choose File > Save As, then select Download as PDF or Download as Image. The image option provides PNG or JPEG and lets you select pages and resolution; PNG also offers a transparent background. The PDF export includes all pages according to the drawing’s page layout.
Upload the export to Confluence Cloud
-
Open the Confluence page or live doc and choose edit.
-
Drag the exported image or PDF onto the page, or use the toolbar’s file or image upload control.
-
Choose how it should appear, such as inline, as a card, or as a link, where the editor supports that display.
-
Publish or update the page, then check the result in the page itself.

You need Add Attachments permission in the space to upload. If you upload a revised export with the same filename, Confluence creates a new attachment version. Keep the Visio source separately if readers need it, and upload a fresh export whenever the drawing changes.

Can you embed a Visio file or make it editable?
Uploading a .vsdx attaches the source file, but it does not turn the drawing into a live, editable Visio canvas in Confluence. Use Visio to edit the source and upload the updated export. Attach the source too if readers need to download it. Atlassian cautions that not all file types can be displayed or embedded, so use a supported image or PDF when inline viewing matters.
When an iFrame is appropriate
Atlassian describes its iFrame macro as a way to “embed a webpage inside a Confluence page or live doc.” Insert the macro in edit mode from the toolbar or slash-command menu, then configure the webpage URL and dimensions. This embeds web content; it is not a method for making an arbitrary Visio file editable. The destination website must permit framing, and a browser may block the embed. If it appears blank, try HTTPS where appropriate, or use a normal link or an uploaded export instead.

Fix common problems
-
The upload control is missing: Check whether you have Add Attachments permission for the space.

The file is attached but not visible inline: Display it as a link or card where available, or export to an image or PDF and upload that instead.
Best Value
-
The iFrame is blank: The destination may prohibit framing, or the browser may block it. Use a plain link or attach an export if the embed cannot display.
-
A documented button or macro is unavailable: Visio licensing, Confluence plan entitlements, editor interface, permissions, and macro availability can vary. Check the Visio license and Confluence tenant configuration for your account.
Atlassian’s Office macro documentation notes announced deprecation of infrequently used Word and PowerPoint macros and describes attaching files or pasting OneDrive SmartLinks as alternatives. That is not a reason to treat a deprecated Office macro as the standard route for Visio; exporting and uploading is the direct static-display workflow.
