Accepting mobile payments can give restaurant guests a convenient way to pay, but it should usually be one choice in a flexible payment setup—not a replacement for cards, cash, or staff-assisted service. Whether it makes sense depends on your customers and service format, your POS and processor compatibility, and the full cost of accepting the transactions.
What counts as a mobile payment?
Here, mobile payments means a guest uses a phone or other mobile device to initiate payment, especially by tapping a digital wallet on a contactless-capable terminal. That is different from scanning a QR code to order or pay, placing an order in a restaurant app, or tapping a physical contactless card.

The distinction matters when interpreting customer research: the National Restaurant Association groups some findings under “contactless or mobile payments,” so those figures cannot be treated as phone-wallet usage alone.

Convenience and more payment choice
In its 2024 technology research, the U.S. National Restaurant Association reported that 79% of surveyed consumers preferred contactless or mobile payments. It also reported that 73% opted for digital-wallet options, naming Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Wallet, PayPal, and Venmo as examples. These are reported preferences, not measured usage rates, and they do not show that every diner wants to pay by phone or that acceptance raises sales. National Restaurant Association, 2024

Potential fit with the checkout flow
A contactless payment option may fit naturally at a counter, at a table, or in an off-premises transaction, depending on the equipment and POS setup. Payment systems can support different preferences and dining scenarios, but the result depends on the restaurant’s actual configuration. National Restaurant Association, April 3, 2024
Alignment with digitally oriented service
Mobile acceptance may be an easier fit where guests already order digitally, such as some limited-service or delivery settings. The National Restaurant Association’s 2024 landscape report describes differences in willingness across service segments; that is a reason to consider your own format, not evidence that a particular payment method will improve performance. Less handling of some shared items
When paired with a digital receipt, a no-contact payment flow can reduce the need to pass paper receipts or shared pens around in some transactions. This is an operational possibility, not a guarantee of health or safety. National Restaurant Association

Processing fees do not disappear
A phone wallet is not a fee-free payment method, and mobile acceptance does not automatically lower processing costs. The National Restaurant Association describes credit-card processing as the third-largest operating expense for most restaurants; this is the association’s characterization on an advocacy page, not a fee estimate for an individual business. Ask your processor how wallet transactions are classified and compare the actual rate schedule, including any applicable transaction charges. National Restaurant Association, accessed October 7, 2026

Payment costs also depend on market rules and routing. A Reserve Bank of Australia analysis published in September 2022 illustrates how merchant costs can vary by payment type and jurisdiction; its Australian findings should not be used as a U.S. restaurant fee estimate. Equipment and integration take work
Acceptance requires a contactless-capable terminal and a POS and processor arrangement that supports the wallets and transaction flow you intend to offer. Before buying hardware, confirm compatibility and how the setup handles network interruptions, transaction settlement, receipts, refunds, tips, and split checks. There is no universal guarantee that a given terminal, POS, or processor combination will support every wallet or workflow.

A digital flow can clash with the service experience
Some full-service guests may prefer interaction with staff or a familiar bill-paying routine. Mobile payment can be offered as a choice without replacing employees or changing the hospitality flow. Rob Conti, Senior Vice President of Information Technology at First Watch, put the balance this way: “Technology allows us to serve more demand without giving up our commitment to hospitality.” National Restaurant Association, May 9, 2024
In the Association’s 2024 findings, 68% of limited-service customers and 62% of full-service customers were willing to handle a bill via contactless or mobile payment. Those are willingness figures, not adoption rates. The Association also reported that 76% of operators said technology gives them a competitive edge; this is an operator finding about technology broadly, not proof that mobile payments alone create an advantage. National Restaurant Association, March 27, 2024

Some guests will need another way to pay
A guest may not have a supported phone or wallet, may have a depleted battery, or may prefer not to use a mobile device. The available findings do not quantify how often these situations occur, so plan for them as practical contingencies: retain payment methods and staff assistance that work for your customers.
Security benefits should not be assumed
Security depends on the wallet, terminal, POS, processor, and how the restaurant configures and manages them. The sources cited here do not provide comparative fraud rates or establish that all mobile wallets and implementations are inherently safer than other payment methods. Ask providers to document their security and privacy controls rather than relying on a blanket claim.

- Start with your service segment and guests. Consider whether phone-based payment suits your counter, table-service, delivery, or other checkout flow. Survey preferences can inform the decision, but your own guests’ feedback and transaction experience matter more than a national preference figure.
- Check what you already own. Ask your payment processor whether your existing terminals, POS software, and account support the specific wallets and contactless transactions you want to accept.
- Price the whole setup. Compare processing terms along with any terminal, software, installation, or integration costs. Ask how wallet transactions are priced and classified rather than assuming they cost less than other card transactions.
- Walk through real checkout tasks. Confirm the handling of tips, split checks, refunds, receipts, settlement, and staff assistance. Check that a workable option remains for guests who cannot or do not want to pay with a phone.
- Review provider-documented controls. Check the security and privacy protections for the complete payment setup, not just the wallet brand.
- Consider a limited pilot. If the flow seems suitable, test it in a setting where mobile payment is already natural. Compare transaction mix, guest feedback, checkout friction, and costs with a baseline before expanding. This is a practical evaluation approach, not a result established by the cited studies.
The National Restaurant Association’s 2024 technology summary reports that customer interest varies by segment and that operators should choose technology with both customer experience and their operating needs in mind. Hudson Riehle, the association’s Senior Vice President of Research & Knowledge, said: “Understanding which technologies customers in each segment would like to have, really want, and consider essential, provides operators with substantial opportunities to enhance the customer experience, amplify marketing and operate more efficiently.” National Restaurant Association, 2024
