1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA wall-mounted TV can save floor space, but it can also become inconvenient if it sits too high, hides hard-to-reach ports, or needs wiring that is difficult to change. Before drilling, compare the wall mount with a stand using your usual viewing position, wall construction, connected devices, and need for future access. Wall mounting is not automatically a mistake; the right choice depends on the room and your priorities.
When wall mounting can become a regret
The main problem is often not the mount itself but a decision that is difficult to reverse: fixing the screen too high, discovering that the wall or stud layout complicates installation, concealing cables before deciding which devices to connect, or choosing a mount that leaves too little room to reach ports. A stand avoids drilling and usually makes repositioning and cable access easier, though it uses furniture and floor space.

There is no reliable published statistic here for how often TV owners regret wall mounting. A reader discussion asking whether to mount a TV reflects an individual question, not evidence of how common regret is.
Wall mount or stand: which suits your room?
| Decision factor | Wall mount | Stand |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing height | Can place the screen at a suitable height, but that height must be planned before drilling. | Depends on the stand and furniture; easier to change by moving the TV or furniture. |
| Repositioning | Limited by the mount and where it is fixed. A full-motion mount can add movement, but capabilities vary by model. | Generally easier to move or reposition without changing the wall. |
| Ports and cables | Access can be awkward with a close-fitting mount; cables need a visible or concealed route. | Usually easier to reach ports and adjust connected devices. |
| Wall and installation | Requires a suitable wall attachment and careful installation. Samsung says a mount should attach to a stud in most cases; an anchor is appropriate only if the wall can support the TV. | Does not require wall drilling, though the furniture must support the TV. |
| Space and access | Can free furniture or floor space and keep a TV out of reach, priorities Samsung identifies as potential benefits. | Uses a stand or furniture surface but can be the simpler choice when flexibility and access matter more. |
Samsung says the choice depends on the room and personal preference. See its TV wall-mounting considerations for the manufacturer’s guidance.

Choose height from your main viewing seat
Sit where you normally watch and measure your eye height. Samsung gives an approximate living-room guideline of 42 inches from the floor to the center of the screen for a person of roughly average height sitting on a standard couch. It says to adjust for the actual viewers and furniture. Sony also describes the preferred position as having the screen center at eye level.
These are guidelines, not universal requirements. Screen size, seating, and room layout can change what feels comfortable. Check the proposed position from the main seat before drilling, and account for furniture below the screen. Samsung’s placement advice is in its mounting guidance; Sony’s viewing-position FAQ is here.

Check the TV, mount, and wall before buying
Compatibility is more than matching a mount’s advertised screen-size range. Check the TV manual and mount specifications for the TV’s weight, VESA mounting pattern, supported size, and the wall attachment requirements. Samsung says its TVs are VESA compliant, but the mount must also support the TV’s size. Sony directs users to the relevant mount specifications.
Wall construction matters too. Samsung says the mount should attach to a stud in most cases and cautions that an anchor is suitable only when the wall can support the TV. Do not treat a particular anchor or stud-finding approach as universal: the TV, mount, wall, and their instructions determine what is appropriate.

Sony says wall mounting requires special skills and recommends qualified professionals. If you cannot confirm the wall or installation requirements, getting help is safer than relying on tools alone. Samsung lists a stud finder, level, and drill among common tools, but owning them does not make an unsuitable wall safe. Consult the Sony Help Guide on wall mounting and the instructions for the specific TV and mount.
Plan devices, cables, and future access
List the devices you expect to connect—such as a game console or streaming device—before deciding where the TV will go. Samsung notes that a TV streaming over Wi-Fi may need only its power cord, while external devices add cables. Decide whether visible cords are acceptable or whether you want concealed routing. Samsung suggests considering in-wall-rated cables and a routing kit for concealed wiring. Use cables suited to the installation and follow applicable requirements.

What mount movement can—and cannot—solve
For a model-specific example, SANUS says its VLT7 extends 6.8 inches from the wall and swivels up to 15 degrees left and right. It also describes four-direction tilt and post-installation height and leveling adjustments. Those features may make access, positioning, or glare management easier, but they are not features of every mount and do not replace planning the initial height. Check the SANUS VLT7 specifications and verify that any mount fits both your TV and wall.

Use this checklist before drilling
- Sit in the usual viewing position and measure eye height. Check the proposed screen center against the viewers, furniture, and room layout.
- Check the TV manual and mount specifications for VESA pattern, weight, supported size, and installation requirements.
- Confirm the wall construction and attachment method required for the TV and mount. If you are uncertain, consult a qualified installer.
- List connected devices and choose a cable route: visible cords or concealed wiring using appropriately rated cables and following applicable requirements.
- Decide whether a fixed, tilting, or full-motion mount will provide enough positioning range and access for future changes. Do not assume a close-fitting mount will leave ports easy to reach.
- Only after confirming the position, compatibility, wall, and cable plan, mark and install according to the TV and mount instructions.
Take extra care with a fireplace location
Samsung Support says, “We do not recommend mounting your TV over a fireplace.” Its guidance cites concerns including heat, cleaning, and high placement. Read the full Samsung Support recommendation before considering that location.
