Should You Use Windows 11 Widgets or Turn Them Off?

Keep Widgets for useful glanceable cards, or hide the taskbar button and tune the feed if it distracts. Hiding the button does not disable Windows+W access.

Keep Windows 11 Widgets if their glanceable cards are useful; hide the taskbar button or tune the board if it adds clutter or noise. Turning off the taskbar button does not fully disable Widgets: you can still open the board with Windows+W, or swipe from the side on supported devices.

What Windows 11 Widgets offers

Widgets is a customizable board of dynamic cards that provides quick access to apps and services. Cards can show weather and personalized information such as sports, stocks, local news, and breaking headlines. Whether that is useful depends on which cards you want and how often you check them; Microsoft’s feature guidance does not establish a general productivity benefit.

Choose based on what bothers you

Your priority Suggested choice Why
Fast access to useful glanceable cards Keep Widgets and select relevant cards The board is designed to surface dynamic information and app or service cards.
Less taskbar clutter, with occasional board access still useful Hide the Widgets taskbar item The button disappears, but Windows+W can still open the board.
Cards are useful, but the feed or alerts are distracting Turn off Discover or unwanted notifications and adjust cards These settings can be changed separately from the taskbar button.
You need Widgets avoided on an organization-managed device Ask the device administrator about policy Microsoft documents a device-level policy, separate from the user-facing taskbar toggle.

Hide or restore the taskbar button

  1. Right-click the taskbar and choose Taskbar settings.
  2. Under Taskbar items, switch Widgets off to hide the button, or on to restore it.
  3. If the button is hidden but you want the board, press Windows+W. Microsoft also documents a side-swipe gesture on supported devices.

This changes the taskbar entry point, not whether the board can be opened. Microsoft confirms the shortcut and supported-device gesture in its Widgets guidance.

Keep Widgets but reduce feed noise

Open Widgets and use its settings to turn off Discover under Dashboards. You can also review notification badges and dashboard notifications, and remove or rearrange individual cards. This is a better fit when you want selected cards but not the full feed or its interruptions.

Review privacy by service

Privacy settings are not necessarily controlled in one place because each card may rely on a different app or service. In a card’s More menu, check its Powered by label; Microsoft says widget-specific privacy is controlled by the service powering that widget.

Microsoft-account data used to personalize the board can be reviewed in the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Windows diagnostic data is governed by diagnostic-data settings in Windows Settings. Location estimation may use Windows Location when enabled, or otherwise the connection’s IP address, according to Microsoft’s Widgets guidance.

Separate controls for the lock screen and managed devices

Lock-screen visibility

Lock-screen Widgets visibility has its own toggle in lock-screen settings. Changing that setting is separate from hiding the taskbar button or changing the Widgets board.

Rank #3

Organization-managed devices

Microsoft’s taskbar policy reference lists an Allow widgets device policy and says Widgets are on by default unless settings are changed. This administrative control is distinct from a user hiding the taskbar entry point. Check current Windows version and edition applicability with the administrator before relying on or applying a policy.

If Widgets is not working as expected

Microsoft says Widgets and Discover need current versions of the Windows Web Experience Pack and Start Experiences App to work as expected, and that these should update automatically. If the board or feed is malfunctioning, check for updates to those components rather than treating the taskbar toggle as a repair setting.
