You can try dimming or turning off Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting to reduce power used by compatible RGB peripherals, but Microsoft does not publish a battery-life gain for doing so. Treat it as a small, device-dependent adjustment—not a dependable way to extend laptop runtime. For more reliable steps, start with Windows’ power and display settings.
What Dynamic Lighting controls—and what it does not
Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting centralizes controls for compatible RGB or LED peripherals, such as keyboards and mice. Depending on the device, its settings can control brightness, colors, and lighting effects. It does not control the laptop’s built-in display brightness, which is a separate power setting. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting guide describes the peripheral controls; its battery guidance covers Windows power and display settings separately.

Will turning it down improve battery life?
It might reduce power consumed by the peripheral lighting, but the available Microsoft documentation does not quantify a runtime change or establish that users will notice one. There is no supported percentage or number of extra minutes to expect. The result will depend on the particular peripheral and how you use the laptop.

If you want to check on your own laptop, compare similar unplugged sessions: use the same workload and screen brightness, and change only the lighting setting. This is a personal comparison, not a controlled test, and a difference may be too small to distinguish from normal variation in battery use.

How to dim or turn off Dynamic Lighting
- Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- If the compatible device exposes a brightness control, lower it; you can also choose a simpler effect or color if those options are available.
- To stop using Dynamic Lighting, turn the feature off. The device then uses its default non-Dynamic Lighting behavior, which can vary by device.
Not every RGB peripheral supports Dynamic Lighting. Microsoft says the feature applies to devices implementing the HID LampArray standard, and supported devices may need current firmware. Check the specific device and its firmware if the controls are missing or ineffective. A higher-priority background RGB-control app may also override Dynamic Lighting. Microsoft’s feature rollout notes describe the compatibility basis and firmware requirement; the control guide covers app priority.

For better-established battery adjustments, open Settings > System > Power & battery and review Energy recommendations. Windows documents options including power mode, Energy Saver, display brightness, and screen and sleep timing. The exact recommendations and paths can vary by device. Microsoft’s battery tips and battery recommendations explain these controls.

- Lowering screen brightness changes the built-in display setting, not peripheral lighting.
- Energy Saver and power mode offer system-level options that may affect how the laptop balances power use and performance.
- Shorter screen and sleep timers reduce the time the display or laptop stays active when idle.
These settings can involve workflow or convenience trade-offs, so choose the changes that suit how you use the laptop.

Keep it on, simplify it, or turn it off?
| Choice | What changes | Battery expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Dynamic Lighting on | Retain the selected colors and effects on compatible devices. | No runtime difference is established. |
| Dim or simplify the lighting | Use less conspicuous lighting if the device offers brightness or effect controls. | Any runtime change is unquantified. |
| Turn Dynamic Lighting off | Windows stops managing the lighting through this feature; the device uses its default behavior. | No specific gain is established; device behavior varies. |
