Should You Use a Next.js Server Action or Route Handler?

Use a Next.js Server Action for mutations initiated by your app’s UI. Choose a Route Handler when callers need a conventional HTTP endpoint, explicit methods, or an independent request-and-response contract.

Use a Server Action when a mutation starts in your Next.js UI, such as submitting a form or saving a record. Choose a Route Handler when the caller needs a conventional HTTP endpoint, explicit request-and-response behavior, or access independent of Next.js’s Server Function invocation model. Both are server entry points: authenticate the user, authorize the operation, and validate submitted data where it executes.

Choose based on who calls the operation

The practical difference is the contract presented to the caller—not which option is inherently more secure. A Server Action is a server-side function integrated with the application UI. A Route Handler exposes a URL with HTTP methods and request/response semantics.

Caller or need Prefer Reason
A form in a Server or Client Component submits a mutation Server Action Forms can invoke the action directly; it receives FormData. Server Component forms support progressive enhancement, and the action can update UI or data in the same roundtrip. Next.js: Mutating Data; Next.js: Forms
A client-side UI event changes server state Server Action Client event handlers can invoke Server Functions, making the action a natural fit for a UI-triggered mutation. Next.js: Mutating Data
The caller needs a conventional URL, explicit HTTP responses, or methods beyond POST Route Handler Route Handlers use Web Request and Response APIs and support GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE, HEAD, and OPTIONS. Next.js: Route Handlers
A separate service, integration, or non-React client must call the operation Usually Route Handler This follows from the contract: a Route Handler is an HTTP endpoint, while a Server Action is invoked through Next.js Server Function machinery and only POST can invoke it. Next.js: Mutating Data; Next.js: Route Handlers
Reads, parallel fetching, polling, or a public data interface Usually not a Server Action Next.js describes Server Actions as mutation-focused and queued; Server Components cover most data fetching. Use a Route Handler if the reader specifically needs an HTTP endpoint. Next.js: Backend for Frontend

When a Server Action fits

A Server Function is an asynchronous function that runs on the server; when used for a mutation, it is called a Server Action. It can be invoked by forms in Server and Client Components, or from client event handlers. For a form submission, it receives FormData. Server Component forms support progressive enhancement, so the form can work before client-side JavaScript has loaded. Next.js: Mutating Data; Next.js: Forms

After a successful mutation, an action can revalidate cached data with revalidatePath or revalidateTag. The framework can return updated UI and data in the same roundtrip. Next.js: Mutating Data

Use this path when the operation belongs to an interaction in your own app and the UI benefits from that integrated mutation flow. Do not select it just because it is convenient for fetching data: the current documentation says client-dispatched actions are queued and execute sequentially, while noting that this is an implementation detail that may change. When a Route Handler fits

A Route Handler is a route.js or route.ts file in the App Router’s app directory. It implements a handler with Web Request and Response APIs. Its documented methods are GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE, HEAD, and OPTIONS. Next.js: Route Handlers

Pick one when a caller needs to send an HTTP request to a defined route and consume an explicit response—for example, an independent client or integration, or an interface that needs method-specific behavior. The choice gives the caller an HTTP contract rather than tying it to the Server Function invocation model. Next.js calls Route Handlers public HTTP endpoints in its Backend for Frontend guidance. Route Handlers are the App Router counterpart to Pages Router API Routes; Next.js says there is no need to use both for the same purpose. A route file cannot occupy the same route segment as a page file. Next.js: Route Handlers

Security checks belong in both

Do not treat a Server Action as private just because your application invokes it from a form or event handler. Next.js says Server Functions can be reached through direct POST requests. Put authentication and authorization checks inside the action or handler that performs the operation; the authentication guidance says to treat both as public-facing endpoints. Next.js: Mutating Data; Next.js: Authentication

  • Authenticate: establish who is making the request at the server boundary.
  • Authorize: check that this user may perform this operation. For a record identified by an ID, verify the user can access or modify that specific resource.
  • Validate: check submitted values server-side. Client-side validation can improve usability but is not the security boundary.

For Server Actions, the current configuration documentation says the request origin is compared with the host domain and, by default, only the same origin is allowed. It also documents a default maximum request body size of 1 MB, configurable in next.config.js. These are documented framework defaults, not universal limits for every version or deployment. Check the deployment runtime before relying on handler behavior

Route Handler capabilities can depend on how the host runs them. Next.js notes that some hosts deploy handlers as lambda functions. In that setup, handlers may not share data across requests, filesystem writes may not be supported, long-running work may hit timeouts, and WebSockets may not work because the connection closes after a timeout or response generation. Confirm the limits of your actual host and runtime rather than assuming these constraints apply to every Next.js deployment. Next.js: Backend for Frontend

A short decision check

  • Is the caller a form or event in this Next.js app, and is the operation a mutation? Start with a Server Action.
  • Does the caller need an explicit HTTP URL and response contract, or an HTTP method other than POST? Use a Route Handler.
  • Is this a read or parallel fetch? Prefer the appropriate data-fetching approach rather than a Server Action; add a Route Handler if the consumer needs an HTTP interface.
  • For either option, verify identity, permissions, resource access, input validation, and deployment constraints at the server boundary.

This guidance reflects the official Next.js App Router documentation searched on October 7, 2026; documentation and defaults can change, so check the current version when implementing.
