Yes—install the newest iOS update Apple offers for your exact iPhone, even if it cannot run the newest major iOS release. Being unable to install the latest major version does not necessarily mean the phone has stopped receiving security updates. Check the update available for your model, back up first, and weigh replacement if security updates have ended or the phone no longer meets your needs.

Why an older iPhone may still get updates

Apple can release security updates for older iOS branches after a newer major version is available. Its release history, checked October 4, 2026, lists iOS 27.0.1 for iPhone 11 and later, released September 28, 2026. It also lists older-branch releases: iOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, released August 17, 2026; iOS 16.7.16 for iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X, released May 11, 2026; and iOS 15.8.8 for iPhone 6s models, iPhone 7 models, and first-generation iPhone SE, released May 11, 2026. These examples show that the latest major iOS and the latest update available to a particular phone are not always the same. They do not guarantee future updates for any model. See Apple’s security releases list.

How to check and install the update for your iPhone

  1. Identify the phone and its current software: Open Settings > General > About. Apple’s iPhone model and software information guide explains where to find these details.
  2. Check compatible updates: Open Settings > General > Software Update. The iPhone shows updates compatible with that device. Install the newest one offered there; Apple recommends using the latest iOS version possible for the model.
  3. Back up before updating: Apple advises backing up the iPhone before downloading new software. Follow its instructions for updating iOS.
  4. Install the update shown for the phone: Follow the on-screen instructions. Do not infer that no update exists just because the phone cannot install the newest major iOS.

What if the iPhone no longer receives security updates?

Apple’s general advice is that keeping software up to date is “the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” Its security advice also illustrates why support needs to be checked by iOS branch: on March 11, 2026, Apple said it extended protection against the web attacks discussed on that page to older devices through updates for iOS 15 and iOS 16. For those specific attacks, Apple said devices on iOS 13 or iOS 14 needed to update to iOS 15 to receive the protection. This guidance is about the attacks Apple describes; it is not a guarantee that every older iOS version is safe from every threat.

If Software Update offers no newer version and Apple’s security releases list shows no current release for the phone’s branch, treat that as a meaningful security limitation. Apple’s published guidance cited here does not set a universal replacement deadline. Whether to keep using the phone depends on its security-update status and your own needs and risk tolerance.

Decide whether keeping the phone still works for you

  • Security: Check whether Apple has a recent security update for the exact model and iOS branch.
  • Apps and services: Confirm that the apps and services you rely on still work on the installed iOS. Compatibility varies; there is no universal cutoff established here.
  • Reliability: Consider whether the phone performs dependably for the tasks you use it for.
  • Cost and support: Compare the cost of maintaining the current phone with a supported replacement, while recognizing that Apple’s release history does not promise a particular support horizon.

A phone that cannot run the newest major iOS is not automatically unusable, and the newest iOS is not a prerequisite for everyone. But if security updates have stopped, that raises risk; replacing the phone may be a sensible choice depending on how you use it.
