If your Apple TV is working normally, there is no documented reason to disconnect it on a monthly schedule.
What unplugging can—and cannot—do
A power cycle can help when Apple TV is unresponsive, will not turn on, or displays a black screen. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD says: “Unplug the power cord from Apple TV, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in.” Apple’s troubleshooting steps do not describe this as a monthly routine or claim that scheduled unplugging improves performance or extends the device’s life.

The sources reviewed also do not establish that monthly unplugging clears memory, improves security, speeds up streaming, or prevents faults. Treat those claims as unproven rather than as benefits of a recurring power cycle.
When and how to power-cycle Apple TV
If Apple TV is not responding or will not start, try the power-cycle step below. If the problem is a blank picture, check the signal path as well: Apple advises checking the HDMI connection, the TV’s selected input, video resolution, and any HDMI switch or AV receiver in use.

- Unplug Apple TV’s power cord.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and check whether the problem is resolved.
The 30-second instruction is Apple’s guidance for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD. For other symptoms or models, follow the relevant instructions in Apple’s troubleshooting article.
Do not unplug during a software update
Apple says to keep Apple TV connected to power until an update finishes. If “Preparing Update” or “Applying Update” remains on screen for more than an hour, Apple directs users to contact Apple Support before unplugging. A progress bar stalled below an Apple logo with no text has a separate restart instruction after more than an hour; use the steps for that specific screen in Apple’s update guidance.

Does leaving Apple TV plugged in use much standby power?
Apple’s 2021 environmental report for Apple TV 4K with Siri Remote says the tested model entered sleep/network standby after 15 minutes of inactivity by default. Under the report’s test conditions, standby consumption was 0.42 W at 100 V, 0.40 W at 115 V, and 0.47 W at 230 V. These are figures for that specific model and report—not measurements for every Apple TV generation or a basis for estimating every household’s savings. When unplugging for a different reason makes sense
Apple’s guide for Apple TV (3rd generation) advises unplugging during lightning storms or when the device will be unused for a long period. That advice concerns those circumstances; it does not set a once-a-month restart schedule. Apple TV Important Product Information Guide.
