For most people, there is no need to turn off a phone every night. Keep it on if you need an alarm, overnight calls or emergency reachability; silence nonessential alerts or move the phone away if notifications or late-night scrolling disturb your sleep. Turning it off is a reasonable personal choice when you need none of those functions, but the guidance cited here does not establish that nightly shutdown improves sleep or battery lifespan.

Before choosing, weigh five things: whether you must be reachable, how easily alerts wake you, whether the phone encourages screen use, how you will wake up, and how your particular phone handles charging.

Will leaving a phone on disrupt sleep?
The sleep advice cited here focuses on screen use and interruptions, not the phone’s powered-on state by itself. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) advises avoiding screens before bed, suggesting you avoid looking at a phone, computer or TV “an hour or so before bed,” and recommends a quiet, cool, dark bedroom. AASM recommends adults get at least seven hours of sleep a night and avoid blue light from handheld electronics for 30–60 minutes before bedtime. Its 2025 survey found that 26% of surveyed US adults said they prioritized phone screen time over the recommended amount of sleep each night, while 50% said they used a screen in bed every day. The survey was self-reported, not evidence that a phone left on causes sleep problems. If alerts are the problem
Silence nonessential notifications or set a scheduled quiet mode, then check its exceptions so you know which calls or alarms can still get through. AASM advises: “If a phone is in the room, turn off notifications to avoid disturbances.” AASM
If scrolling is the problem
Put the phone outside the bedroom or far enough away that using it requires getting up. If you depend on it to wake you, AASM suggests trying a separate clock. This changes the temptation and access to the screen without requiring a nightly shutdown.

If you need emergency contact
Do not disable your only reliable way to receive an urgent call unless you have arranged another contact method. NIH’s instruction to “Keep a telephone with emergency numbers by your bed” appears in nighttime safety advice for people with neurological disorders; it is not a general instruction for everyone to keep a smartphone in the bedroom. A shutdown stops the phone from using power in standby, but the cited manufacturer guidance does not compare nightly shutdown with leaving a phone on standby over time. It therefore does not establish that turning a phone off every night extends battery lifespan.

Apple distinguishes battery life—the time a phone runs before it needs recharging—from battery lifespan, the time before its battery needs replacement. Its advice emphasizes checking app battery use, limiting background app refresh and controlling notifications that wake the display. Follow instructions for your specific model; there is no universal rule established here for every manufacturer and phone. Apple says an iPhone stops charging automatically when fully charged and can safely remain connected overnight. Optimized Battery Charging is designed to reduce the time the phone spends fully charged. On supported Pixel phones, Adaptive Charging can learn charging habits and finish charging shortly before you unplug the device. Google documents an 80% charging limit for Pixel 6a and later. Support for these features, and the conditions under which a Pixel may limit charging, varies by model and Android version. Check your current phone settings and model-specific instructions. Set up a quiet night without missing what matters
- Decide what must still reach you. Identify whether you need an alarm, calls from particular people or another overnight alert.
- Schedule a quiet mode. Use Do Not Disturb, Bedtime mode or your phone’s equivalent. Review exceptions rather than assuming every important call or alarm will behave as you expect.
- Separate the phone from bedtime scrolling. Stop screen use before bed; if having the device nearby makes that difficult, charge it outside the bedroom and use a separate clock if needed.
- Review charging settings for your model. Look for battery or charging features such as Optimized Battery Charging on iPhone or Adaptive Charging and an 80% limit on supported Pixel models. Keep the device within the temperature guidance from its manufacturer.
- Use shutdown only if it suits your needs. Turn the phone off when you want to and can do without its overnight functions; do not treat a nightly shutdown as a proven requirement for healthy sleep or battery care.
