The offers can make a move appealing, especially if you qualify for device credits or help paying off an existing phone. Whether switching actually saves money depends on the plan, credit terms, fees and how long you stay.
Why an iPhone launch can prompt a carrier switch
A new iPhone gives carriers a timely chance to compete for people who are already considering an upgrade. In its September 2024 iPhone 16 announcement, T-Mobile advertised trade-in-based device credits on named Go5G plans and a limited-time $200 T-Mobile spending credit for each qualifying line switched from eligible carriers. That was a historical launch-period offer, not a current promotion or evidence of how many people changed carriers. T-Mobile’s iPhone 16 announcement described the offer and its eligibility terms.

The appeal is straightforward: a buyer weighing a new phone may see a carrier switch as a way to reduce the device cost at the same time. But a large advertised credit is only one part of the transaction. The required service plan and the time needed to receive all credits can determine whether the full deal is worthwhile.

What T-Mobile’s iPhone switch offers involve
As of October 7, 2026, T-Mobile’s offers page lists multiple iPhone promotions for customers switching to T-Mobile with a qualifying plan. Credits may be spread across as many as 36 months. Some offers also include a $35 device connection charge and taxes. The specific phone, plan, credit amount, trade-in rules and deadlines vary by promotion, and the offers can change. Check the current terms on T-Mobile’s offers page before making a decision.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
A bill credit paid over time is different from an upfront discount: you receive the advertised value only as the monthly credits post, subject to the offer’s terms. If you leave or change plans before the credits finish, you may not receive the remaining value. Review the applicable promotion terms to confirm what happens in your specific case.
Could Keep and Switch cover your old phone balance?
T-Mobile’s separate Keep and Switch offer may help eligible new voice customers who still owe money on a phone financed through a previous carrier. T-Mobile says it can provide up to $800 per line toward the remaining device payment balance, for up to four voice lines. The amount is a cap, not a guaranteed payment to every customer.

Eligibility depends on several conditions: the previous carrier and phone must qualify, the customer must choose a qualifying plan, the account must be in good standing, and the phone must have been on the previous carrier’s device payment plan for at least 90 days. The phone must also be unlocked before porting. Read the current requirements on T-Mobile’s Keep and Switch page; do not assume that an existing balance will be covered until your device and account meet the stated rules.
How to judge whether switching is worth it
Compare the total cost over the promotion’s full credit period, not just the advertised phone price or monthly credit. Use the actual monthly price of the required plan and account for any old balance, upfront charges and the possibility of leaving before credits are complete.

- Plan cost: Identify the exact plan required and compare its cost with the service you would otherwise choose. A device credit may be offset by paying more for service.
- Device credit: Confirm the credit amount, how many months it takes to arrive and what plan or account changes could stop future credits.
- Trade-in: Check which models qualify, the phone’s required condition and whether the value depends on a particular plan or offer.
- Existing phone balance: For Keep and Switch, verify the previous carrier, device, financing history, unlock status and account standing before porting.
- Upfront charges: Include applicable connection charges and taxes in your comparison; the offers page notes that some promotions carry a $35 device connection charge and taxes.
- Flexibility: Consider how likely you are to keep the qualifying service for the full credit term and what value you would lose if you leave early.
For a fair comparison, write down the service and device costs you expect to pay in each option over the same period. Subtract only credits you are eligible for and expect to receive under the terms. This avoids treating a conditional, months-long credit as if it were an immediate reduction in the phone’s price.
Why the offer’s clarity matters
Carrier promotions can be difficult to evaluate when the plan, phone credit and eligibility rules interact. In JD Power’s 2025 U.S. Wireless Retail Experience Study—Volume 1, based on responses collected from July through December 2024, only 34% of customers said they believed their wireless service had improved in value. Nearly half—45%—strongly agreed that their plans and features were easy to understand. Customers who said their plans and features were easy to understand had cost-and-promotions satisfaction 203 points higher. These are customer-perception findings, not evidence about iPhone launch switching. JD Power’s study release provides the results.
Rank #4
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
In that same retail experience study, T-Mobile scored 832 in the mobile network operator segment, compared with the segment average of 819. The score concerns the retail experience, including cost and promotions and the purchase process; it is not a network coverage score. JD Power’s release describes the study and its measures.

Should you switch before or after the new iPhone comes out?
There is no source-backed rule that switching before launch is better than waiting until after it. A past launch-period offer shows that T-Mobile has marketed incentives around an iPhone release, while the current promotions page shows offers that depend on their own terms and may change. If you are not ready to commit, compare the live offer when you are prepared to switch; do not rely on a past promotion or assume a launch will bring a particular credit.

The available sources do not quantify the number or share of customers who switch to T-Mobile around iPhone launches, identify their leading reasons, or measure whether launch promotions cause switching. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: launch offers can give some buyers a reason to consider switching, but the deal’s value depends on each customer’s eligibility and full costs.
