If your current battery platform has the tools you need and performs well enough for your work, keep building it in most cases. Compatible batteries and chargers can make each additional bare tool less costly than starting over. Switch—or add a second platform—when another system fills a specific tool or performance gap that matters more than the cost and hassle of replacing or duplicating batteries and chargers.
What changes when you switch platforms?
A cordless platform is the combination of batteries, chargers, and tools designed to work together. Consumer Reports’ Battery Platform Buying Guide, updated March 13, 2026, notes that batteries are proprietary to brands and sometimes specific systems; it also describes buying compatible bare tools later as an option for owners who already have batteries.

Starting fresh commonly means accounting for batteries and a charger as well as the tool. Compare the cost of a complete move with the cost of buying the needed tool as a bare tool in your existing platform. A cordless drill and impact driver combo kit with batteries and charger can be one way to start or replace a platform, but included batteries and charger vary by kit. There is no generally supported dollar threshold at which switching becomes worthwhile.

Decide based on the tools you actually need
- List the tools you expect to use. Focus on the next few years rather than comparing brand names in the abstract.
- Check coverage in your current platform. Look for a suitable tool in the exact system you own, not just a product carrying the same brand name.
- Identify the specific reason to move. A missing tool, unacceptable performance for your work, or a practical access issue is a stronger reason than a vague impression that another brand is better.
- Compare ownership costs. Include the batteries and charger you would need to replace or duplicate, then compare that with a bare tool in the existing system. Check current kit contents and prices before buying.
- Consider the work context. If coworkers share batteries, chargers, or tools, that access may affect which platform is convenient on the job.
Also weigh the condition of your current tools, how frequently you work, access to batteries and service, and whether a manufacturer-supported alliance includes the specific tool you want. These factors can make a second platform for one useful tool more sensible than replacing an otherwise satisfactory collection.

When keeping, switching, or adding a platform makes sense

Do not assume batteries fit because brands or voltages match
Compatibility depends on the exact products and system, not simply a shared voltage or a familiar brand name. Bosch says AMPShare batteries and chargers work with Bosch 18V tools and products from brands integrated into AMPShare. Bosch Professional’s AMPShare FAQ says compatibility applies to batteries, chargers, and tools integrated into the alliance, regardless of product brand. It also says Bosch Professional 18V batteries and chargers work with AMPShare-compatible tools.
Bosch Professional distinguishes AMPShare from Bosch POWER FOR ALL; they are separate systems. Warranty and service depend on the individual AMPShare member shown on the product label. Check the alliance mark and the exact model’s compatibility listing before purchase rather than inferring fit from the brand or voltage.

The Cordless Alliance System describes itself as a multi-brand 18V system and advertises compatibility with over 50 brands and more than 500 tools. Those figures are the alliance’s own current scale claims, accessed October 4, 2026—not an independently audited comparison. The system’s breadth does not mean that unrelated 18V batteries interchange.

The Power Tool Institute’s September 1, 2021 safety release, “Three Part Harmony: Understanding Your Power Tool System,” advises using a battery, tool, and charger made by the same manufacturer and designed to work together. The Institute advises against third-party batteries and adapters. That is the Institute’s safety guidance; it is not a claim that every adapter in every use case has been independently tested here.

For a purchase, verify the exact battery and tool combination against the manufacturer’s compatibility information and use the intended charger. Treat third-party adapters as a compatibility and safety uncertainty, not as equivalent to manufacturer-supported cross-brand use.
